Chapter 18: The Medical Record That Changed Everything

Chapter 18: The Medical Record That Changed Everything

The words my father said made my entire body freeze.

“They found something in your medical records.”

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

The hospital.

My baby.

My records.

Everything that had happened over the last few months rushed through my mind.

The appointments where I sat alone.

The moments when Ryan insisted on speaking to the doctor.

The times I asked questions and somehow left feeling like I was the problem.

“What did they find?” I whispered.

My father stepped closer.

“I don’t know yet.”

Officer Miller immediately asked,

“Who called?”

“The hospital administrator.”

Her expression changed.

“Not the doctor?”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

That detail made everyone uncomfortable.

Because if it was something routine, my doctor would have called.

Not the hospital.

Not the administration.

Something was wrong.

Officer Miller looked at me.

“Emily, are you able to travel?”

I nodded slowly.

“I need to know what happened to my baby.”

My father immediately answered.

“Then we go.”

Ryan suddenly stepped forward.

“No.”

Everyone turned toward him.

The word came out too quickly.

Too desperately.

My father stared at him.

“Why not?”

Ryan realized his mistake.

“I mean… she’s exhausted. She needs rest.”

Officer Miller looked at him.

“That decision belongs to Emily.”

Ryan looked at me.

“Emily, you don’t understand what’s happening.”

And there it was again.

The same sentence.

The same attempt to make me doubt myself.

But this time, I wasn’t the woman lying in bed afraid to speak.

I looked directly at him.

“I understand more than I ever have.”

For the first time, Ryan looked uncertain.

The drive to the hospital felt longer than it actually was.

My father sat beside me.

He didn’t ask questions.

He didn’t pressure me.

He simply held my hand.

The way he had when I was a child.

The way he had before I learned to hide my pain.

When we arrived, the hospital administrator was waiting.

A woman named Dr. Rachel Morgan.

She greeted us with a serious expression.

“Emily Bennett?”

“Yes.”

She looked at my father.

“Colonel Bennett?”

He nodded.

“I’m sorry you had to come here under these circumstances.”

My heart sank.

“What happened?”

Dr. Morgan took a breath.

“We reviewed your prenatal records after concerns were raised during the investigation.”

She glanced at Officer Miller.

“Several entries were changed.”

My stomach tightened.

“Changed?”

“Yes.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“Who authorized those changes?”

Dr. Morgan hesitated.

“That is what we are trying to determine.”

Ryan’s name didn’t need to be said.

Everyone knew.

Dr. Morgan continued.

“Your original medical notes documented concerns.”

“What concerns?”

She looked at me carefully.

“Repeated injuries.”

My eyes filled with tears.

I already knew.

But hearing it from the hospital made it real.

“What else?”

Dr. Morgan opened a file.

“There were also notes about your emotional state.”

I looked down.

The exact thing Ryan used against me.

She continued.

“The original notes stated that you appeared frightened and hesitant when answering questions.”

My father closed his eyes.

Because he understood.

The hospital had seen it.

People had noticed.

But somehow, the truth had been changed.

Dr. Morgan looked at the papers.

“Someone altered the records to make it appear that you were experiencing normal pregnancy anxiety.”

Officer Miller asked,

“Do we know who accessed the files?”

Dr. Morgan nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Everyone became silent.

“Someone using Ryan Carter’s credentials.”

My heart stopped.

My father looked at me.

Ryan had been controlling my life.

My home.

My relationships.

And now…

He had tried to control my medical history.

Dr. Morgan continued.

“But there’s something else.”

I felt my hands shake.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“One of the altered notes involved your baby’s condition.”

My breath caught.

“What does that mean?”

Dr. Morgan’s expression softened.

“Emily, there was a concern during your last examination.”

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Concern about what?”

She looked at him.

“Your baby was showing signs of stress.”

The room went silent.

My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.

My baby.

“Is my baby okay?”

Dr. Morgan smiled gently.

“Right now, yes.”

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

“But the concern is that someone delayed follow-up care.”

My heart broke.

Someone had risked my baby’s safety.

Officer Miller looked serious.

“Can you prove this?”

Dr. Morgan nodded.

“We found the original records.”

She handed the file over.

“And we found another message.”

My father looked at her.

“From who?”

Dr. Morgan’s answer was quiet.

“Ryan.”

The room became cold.

“What did he say?” I asked.

She hesitated.

Then handed me the document.

I read the message.

Only one sentence.

A sentence that made me understand exactly how far Ryan was willing to go.

“Do not contact Emily’s family. I will handle everything.”

My vision blurred.

Because Ryan didn’t just want control.

He wanted complete control.

Over my body.

Over my baby.

Over my life.

Officer Miller looked toward the hallway.

Then her radio sounded.

She listened for a few seconds.

Her face changed.

“What is it?” my father asked.

She looked at Ryan’s empty chair.

Then back at us.

“Ryan Carter is gone.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

Officer Miller’s voice became serious.

“He left before we arrived.”

My father immediately stood.

“Where is he?”

She looked at her phone.

“We’re trying to find out.”

A pause.

Then she added:

“But before he disappeared…”

“He sent one final message.”

My heart raced.

“What message?”

Officer Miller looked at me.

And the words she said next changed everything.

May you like

“He said…”

“If I can’t control Emily, nobody will.”
