Chapter 16: The Real Reason Ryan Chose Me

Chapter 16: The Real Reason Ryan Chose Me

My father’s words stayed in the air.

“He chose you because of who your family is.”

I stared at him.

For months, I had believed Ryan chose me because I was someone he could control.

Because I was someone who had doubts.

Someone who carried pain.

Someone who was afraid of being alone.

But now my father was telling me there was another reason.

A reason I never saw.

“What are you talking about?”

My father looked at the evidence spread across the table.

“Before I came here, I asked someone from my office to look into Ryan’s background.”

Ryan’s expression changed.

“You investigated me?”

My father didn’t even look at him.

“I protected my daughter.”

Ryan laughed quietly.

“You always thought I was the enemy.”

My father finally looked at him.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“I thought you were hiding something.”

That was the difference.

Because my father never judged without evidence.

He gathered facts.

He watched.

He waited.

And now the facts were everywhere.

My father continued.

“Ryan didn’t just research your personal history, Emily.”

He looked at the documents.

“He researched mine.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

My father picked up another folder.

“He knew who I was before you introduced him to me.”

Ryan didn’t respond.

That silence confirmed everything.

I looked at my husband.

“You knew?”

Ryan looked away.

My voice became softer.

“You knew my father was a colonel?”

“Yes.”

“But you never told me you knew.”

Ryan shrugged.

“I didn’t think it mattered.”

My father shook his head.

“It mattered.”

He opened the folder.

“Ryan had access to information about my career, my connections, and my family background.”

Officer Miller looked at the documents.

“Are you saying this marriage may have been motivated by something else?”

My father nodded.

“That’s what we need to determine.”

I felt sick.

Because suddenly, every memory looked different.

The way Ryan was so eager to meet my father.

The way he always asked questions about military life.

The way he seemed impressed by my family name.

I thought he was interested.

I thought he wanted to be part of my world.

But maybe…

He wanted something from it.

Ryan stepped forward.

“That’s ridiculous.”

I looked at him.

“Then explain.”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no simple explanation.

Officer Miller continued reviewing the documents.

“These notes appear to track your family’s financial situation, Colonel.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“Financial situation?”

She nodded.

“There are references to inheritance, property, and future assets.”

My heart dropped.

I looked at Ryan.

“Did you marry me for money?”

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Anger.

“How could you even ask me that?”

The old Ryan returned.

The emotional manipulation.

The attempt to make me feel guilty for questioning him.

But this time, I saw it clearly.

I didn’t look away.

“I’m asking because I need the truth.”

He stared at me.

“You really think I’m that kind of person?”

I almost whispered:

“Yes.”

The word shocked him.

Because months ago, I never would have said it.

Officer Miller continued.

“There’s more.”

She pulled out another document.

“This appears to be a timeline.”

She read silently.

Then her face changed.

“What?”

My father looked at her.

“What is it?”

She handed him the paper.

My father read it.

Then he looked at me.

And I knew immediately.

Something was wrong.

“Dad?”

He hesitated.

Then handed me the document.

My hands shook as I read.

It was a timeline of my pregnancy.

Appointments.

Family visits.

Medical information.

Everything.

But one detail stood out.

A date.

The date Ryan planned to make a major change.

A date after my baby was born.

A date that made my blood run cold.

“What does this mean?”

Nobody answered.

Then Sarah stepped closer.

“Emily…”

I looked at her.

She looked terrified.

“What?”

Sarah took a breath.

“I think Ryan wasn’t planning to leave you.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

She looked at the document.

“He was planning something bigger.”

Officer Miller studied the timeline.

“What kind of plan?”

Sarah looked at Ryan.

And for the first time, even she seemed afraid.

“Control after the baby is born.”

The room became silent.

My father’s face changed.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Ryan didn’t just want control over me.

He wanted control over my child.

Ryan suddenly spoke.

“You’re all making assumptions.”

My father looked at him.

“Then prove us wrong.”

Ryan stayed quiet.

And that silence was louder than any confession.

Officer Miller continued searching the hidden box.

Then the investigator found one final item.

A small USB drive.

Attached to it was a handwritten label.

My name.

“Emily — Final Plan.”

My heart sank.

Because whatever was on that drive…

Was the thing Ryan had been desperate to hide.

And when Officer Miller plugged it into the computer...

The first file appeared.

A video.

Recorded by Ryan himself.
