Chapter 4: The Secret Ryan Tried to Hide

Chapter 4: The Secret Ryan Tried to Hide

Ryan didn’t answer.

The silence was heavier than any accusation.

Officer Miller watched him carefully.

“Mr. Carter, I asked you a question.”

Ryan looked around the room.

At Linda.

At me.

Then at my father.

For months, he had controlled the situation by making everyone doubt me.

But now he was the one trapped.

“I don’t remember,” he finally said.

My father’s expression hardened.

“You don’t remember where you were when your pregnant wife was injured?”

Ryan immediately became defensive.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Then explain what you meant.”

Ryan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I watched him struggle.

And for the first time, I realized something.

Ryan wasn’t sorry.

He wasn’t afraid because he hurt me.

He was afraid because he had been exposed.

Officer Miller continued asking questions.

“When Emily was injured, did she receive medical treatment?”

Ryan looked away.

“She refused.”

I felt my chest tighten.

Because that was another lie.

“I refused because you told me nobody would believe me.”

Ryan turned toward me.

“That’s not true.”

My voice shook, but I kept going.

“You said my father would destroy your career if he knew.”

Ryan became quiet.

That was enough.

Officer Miller wrote something down.

My father stood near the window, silent.

But I knew him.

I knew that silence.

He was putting pieces together.

The same way he had done throughout his military career.

Every detail mattered.

Every contradiction mattered.

Then Officer Miller asked another question.

“Does Ryan have any history of aggressive behavior?”

Linda immediately interrupted.

“No.”

The officer looked at her.

“I wasn’t asking you.”

Linda closed her mouth.

I looked at my father.

He had always told me that the truth didn’t need to be forced.

It just needed to be given time.

And now, time was running out for Ryan.

Suddenly, one of the support workers noticed something near the bedroom doorway.

“Emily, can I ask about this?”

She pointed to a small security camera.

My heart stopped.

Ryan looked nervous.

“What about it?”

The woman walked closer.

“Is this camera working?”

Ryan answered too quickly.

“No.”

Too quickly.

Everyone noticed.

My father slowly turned around.

“Why does your apartment have a camera pointed toward the bedroom?”

Ryan’s face changed.

“It’s for security.”

Officer Miller looked at the camera.

“Who has access to the recordings?”

Nobody spoke.

The silence answered for them.

My stomach dropped.

Because I remembered.

A few weeks earlier, Ryan had told me the camera was broken.

He said there was no reason to worry.

He said nobody was watching.

But now...

I wasn’t sure anymore.

Officer Miller asked,

“Can we see the footage?”

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“No.”

The officer looked at him.

“Why?”

Ryan froze.

Because there was no innocent answer.

My father stepped closer.

“Let them see it.”

Ryan’s voice became louder.

“You don’t understand!”

My father stared at him.

“You’re right.”

His voice was calm.

“I don’t understand how someone can hurt my daughter and then panic when the truth is about to be seen.”

Ryan looked at me.

“Emily, tell them this is unnecessary.”

For a moment, I saw the old Ryan.

The man who used to hold my hand.

The man I married.

The man I thought would protect me.

Then I remembered the nights I cried alone.

The excuses.

The fear.

The pain.

I looked him in the eyes.

“No.”

The word was quiet.

But it changed everything.

Ryan stepped back.

Because he finally understood.

I wasn’t protecting him anymore.

Officer Miller nodded.

“Mr. Carter, we’ll need access to that footage.”

Ryan looked defeated.

But then Linda suddenly spoke.

“There’s something you should know.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were shaking.

And for the first time...

She looked afraid of Ryan.

Not me.

Not my father.

Him.

“What are you talking about?” Ryan asked.

Linda swallowed.

“The night Emily got hurt…”

She paused.

“I wasn’t supposed to tell anyone.”

Ryan’s eyes widened.

“Mom.”

But she continued.

“She didn’t fall.”

The entire apartment went silent.

I stopped breathing.

My father stepped forward.

“What did you say?”

Linda looked down.

And the secret she had protected for months was finally coming out.

“She didn’t fall.”

May you like

Her voice trembled.

“Ryan pushed her.”
