Chapter 19: The Last Move

Chapter 19: The Last Move

The words echoed in my mind.

“If I can’t control Emily, nobody will.”

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything else.

Not the hospital staff walking through the hallway.

Not the voices of the officers communicating through their radios.

Not even my father calling my name.

All I could hear was Ryan’s voice.

The same voice that once promised to love me.

The same voice that whispered that we would build a family together.

Now it was the voice of someone who believed he owned me.

My father immediately moved closer.

“Emily.”

I looked at him.

“He’s going to come after me.”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“He’s going to be found.”

But I could see the concern in his eyes.

Because he knew something I had finally learned.

Ryan wasn’t dangerous because he was angry.

He was dangerous because he planned.

He thought ahead.

He prepared.

And when he lost control, he looked for another way to regain it.

Officer Miller was already speaking into her radio.

“Send units to the apartment. Check all known locations connected to Ryan Carter.”

She looked at me.

“Emily, do you know anywhere he would go?”

I tried to think.

The old Ryan.

The real Ryan.

Not the person he pretended to be.

“He has an office downtown.”

Officer Miller wrote it down.

“Anywhere else?”

I shook my head.

“He never told me everything.”

That sentence hurt.

Because I realized how little I actually knew about the person I married.

Then Sarah spoke.

“There’s somewhere else.”

Everyone looked at her.

Sarah hesitated.

“Ryan had a storage unit.”

Officer Miller turned toward her.

“How do you know?”

Sarah looked uncomfortable.

“Because he used to keep things there.”

“What things?”

Sarah swallowed.

“Files.”

My father’s expression changed.

“More files?”

Sarah nodded.

“He always said information was power.”

Those words sent a chill through me.

Officer Miller immediately called it in.

“Get a warrant for the storage unit.”

My father sat beside me.

“You’re safe now.”

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But something inside me still felt unsettled.

Because Ryan wasn’t someone who disappeared without a reason.

He was preparing something.

Two hours later, the call came.

The storage unit had been found.

And inside...

They discovered everything.

More documents.

More names.

More evidence.

But one thing stood out.

A folder labeled:

“Future Plan.”

My heart sank.

Officer Miller opened the folder carefully.

Inside were photographs.

Not just of me.

Of my father.

My home.

My daily routine.

Ryan had been watching everyone around me.

Not just controlling me.

Preparing for every possible move.

My father looked at the documents silently.

Then he stopped.

“What is this?”

Officer Miller looked over.

“What?”

He handed her a paper.

Her expression changed.

“What does it say?”

My father’s voice was quiet.

“It’s a schedule.”

“A schedule for what?”

He looked at me.

“For after Emily gives birth.”

The room became silent.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What did he plan?”

Officer Miller read the page.

“According to this…”

She paused.

“He planned to file for emergency custody.”

My heart broke.

“He was going to take my baby?”

Officer Miller nodded.

“But there’s more.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She held up another document.

“He prepared statements claiming Emily was mentally unstable.”

My breathing stopped.

Again.

The same lie.

The same weapon.

Ryan planned to use my pain against me.

My pregnancy.

My past.

My fears.

Everything.

My father closed his eyes.

“He was trying to erase her as a mother.”

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Then one of the officers entered the room.

“Officer Miller.”

Everyone looked up.

“We found Ryan.”

The entire room froze.

“Where?”

The officer hesitated.

“He went back to the apartment.”

My heart dropped.

“Why?”

The officer looked at me.

“He left something behind.”

My father immediately stood.

“What?”

The officer handed him a small envelope.

“He said this was for Emily.”

My hands shook.

I didn’t want to open it.

A part of me was still afraid of him.

Afraid of what words he could use to hurt me again.

But my father looked at me.

“You don’t have to do this.”

I looked at the envelope.

Then at my unborn child.

And I knew.

I couldn’t run from Ryan forever.

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only one sentence.

My blood went cold.

“You still don’t know the truth about why your father never told you everything.”

I looked up.

My father’s face had changed.

Because he understood.

Ryan wasn’t just trying to scare me.

He had found another secret.

A secret involving my father.

And this time...

Even Colonel James Bennett looked worried.
