Chapter 6: The Call That Revealed Everything

Chapter 6: The Call That Revealed Everything

Ryan stared at his phone screen.

For the first time since my father arrived, I saw something I had never seen before.

Panic.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

His hand trembled slightly as the phone continued to ring.

Officer Miller noticed immediately.

“Who is calling you?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

“Mr. Carter?”

He quickly turned the phone face down.

“No one important.”

My father looked at him.

“Funny.”

His voice was calm.

“People usually don’t look terrified when they receive calls from no one important.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“You’re trying to intimidate me.”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

He looked directly at him.

“I’m trying to understand why a man who claims he did nothing wrong looks like he just saw his entire life collapse.”

Ryan didn’t respond.

Officer Miller extended her hand.

“Show me the phone.”

Ryan immediately stepped back.

“Why?”

“Because if this is related to the investigation, we need to know.”

Ryan looked toward Linda.

She looked away.

Even his own mother wouldn’t defend him anymore.

Slowly, Ryan picked up the phone.

The screen lit up again.

The caller’s name was visible.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that name.

Dr. Michael Hayes.

My doctor.

The doctor who had monitored my pregnancy.

The doctor Ryan always insisted on speaking with privately.

The doctor who had told everyone that my injuries were “normal pregnancy complications.”

I looked at my father.

“Dad…”

He noticed my expression.

“Who is that?”

I whispered,

“My doctor.”

Officer Miller looked at Ryan.

“Why is your doctor calling you?”

Ryan quickly answered.

“It’s about medical records.”

But his explanation came too fast.

My father noticed.

“So your doctor contacts you directly?”

Ryan said nothing.

Officer Miller held out her hand again.

“Answer it.”

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

Everyone watched as Ryan slowly answered the call.

“Hello?”

The room was silent.

At first, Ryan only listened.

Then his expression changed.

“What?”

A pause.

“No, you can’t do that.”

Another pause.

My father stepped closer.

Ryan lowered his voice.

“I told you nobody was supposed to know.”

Those words changed everything.

Officer Miller immediately reacted.

“Put the phone on speaker.”

Ryan froze.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

Ryan looked trapped.

Slowly, he pressed the button.

A man’s voice filled the room.

“Ryan, I’m done covering for you.”

Everyone became still.

The voice continued.

“The police are already involved, and I’m not risking my medical license for this.”

My stomach dropped.

Medical license?

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Dr. Hayes.”

The voice went quiet.

Then:

“Colonel Bennett?”

My father stepped forward.

“Yes.”

There was a long pause.

Then the doctor said,

“I’m sorry, sir.”

Ryan’s face turned pale.

“What are you doing?”

Dr. Hayes continued.

“Emily’s medical records were altered.”

My entire body went cold.

“What?”

The doctor’s voice became heavier.

“The bruises she came in with were documented.”

Ryan immediately interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.”

But nobody was listening to Ryan anymore.

Dr. Hayes continued.

“I was pressured to describe them differently.”

Officer Miller looked at my father.

“This is a serious allegation.”

My father nodded.

“I know.”

I felt tears running down my face.

All those appointments.

All those times I sat in that examination room hoping someone would notice.

Someone had noticed.

But someone had also helped hide it.

Dr. Hayes continued.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

My voice barely came out.

“Why didn’t you?”

The doctor was silent.

Then he answered.

“Because Ryan threatened me.”

Ryan looked shocked.

“What?”

The doctor continued.

“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he would expose personal information about my family.”

The room became silent.

Ryan wasn’t just hiding abuse.

He was controlling everyone around him.

Officer Miller took the phone from the table.

“Dr. Hayes, we need you to come in and make a formal statement.”

“Of course.”

The call ended.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then my father looked at Ryan.

“You didn’t just hurt my daughter.”

His voice became colder.

“You built an entire system to silence her.”

Ryan stared at the floor.

For once, he had no excuse.

No explanation.

No lie.

But then his expression changed again.

A small, confident smile returned.

And he said something that made everyone freeze.

“You still don’t know the whole story.”

My father looked at him.

“What else is there?”

Ryan slowly lifted his head.

And the answer that came next changed everything.

“Ask Emily why she never told you about the night she left home before she married me.”

I felt the room spin.

May you like

Because Ryan had just opened a door to a secret I had buried for years.

A secret even my father didn’t know.
