Chapter 8 — The Enemy Inside the Mansion

Chapter 8 — The Enemy Inside the Mansion

The sound of footsteps grew louder.

Slow.

Heavy.

Coming closer.

Emily stood in the darkness of the old Harrison mansion, her fingers wrapped tightly around Daniel’s letter.

Beside her stood Vanessa.

The same woman who had humiliated her in front of hundreds of guests.

The same woman who had planted the necklace and tried to destroy her reputation.

Yet now, Vanessa looked more frightened than Emily had ever seen her.

“Who is it?” Emily whispered.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Emily stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?”

Vanessa looked at her with tired eyes.

“You think I planned everything tonight?”

“You did.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

“I framed you.”

The honesty surprised Emily.

Vanessa continued.

“But not because I wanted your life destroyed.”

Emily frowned.

“Then why?”

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

“Because I needed everyone focused on you.”

Emily’s expression changed.

“What?”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“The necklace was a distraction.”

A chill ran through Emily.

“From what?”

Vanessa looked at the letter in Emily’s hand.

“From this.”

Emily held the paper tighter.

“You knew about Daniel’s letter?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Because I helped him hide it.”

For a moment, Emily couldn’t speak.

The woman who had spent the entire evening attacking her was now claiming she had protected her father’s secret.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

She looked ashamed.

“Because I spent years making everyone believe I was the villain.”

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Both women froze.

The intruder was inside.

Vanessa whispered:

“We don’t have much time.”

Emily looked toward the door.

“Who are they?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked toward a bookshelf and pulled out an old book.

A hidden passage opened behind it.

Emily stared.

“What is that?”

“A way out.”

“You knew about this?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Daniel showed it to me.”

Emily looked at her carefully.

“You really loved him.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“And losing him destroyed me.”

Emily softened slightly.

“But you blamed my mother.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with regret.

“I blamed everyone.”

She stepped into the passage.

“I was young. I was angry. I thought Claire stole my future.”

Emily followed slowly.

“And later?”

Vanessa stopped.

“Later I learned the truth.”

“What truth?”

Vanessa turned around.

“That Daniel never chose Claire over me.”

Emily waited.

“He chose the truth over everyone.”

The words stayed with Emily.

Daniel hadn’t left Vanessa because he found someone else.

He left because he discovered something dangerous.

They moved through the narrow passage.

The walls were covered with old family records.

Documents.

Photos.

Secrets hidden for decades.

Emily noticed one photograph on the wall.

She stopped.

It showed Daniel.

Claire.

And Vanessa.

Together.

Not enemies.

Friends.

“What happened to you three?”

Vanessa looked at the picture.

“Someone wanted us to hate each other.”

Emily looked confused.

“Who?”

Before Vanessa could answer, a sound echoed behind them.

A door opening.

They weren’t alone.

Vanessa immediately turned off the light.

The two women stood silently.

A shadow moved at the entrance of the passage.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Emily Carter.”

Her heart stopped.

The voice sounded familiar.

The person stepped closer.

Vanessa whispered:

“No…”

Emily looked at her.

“You know him?”

The figure entered the dim light.

Emily froze.

It was Michael Reed.

The Harrison family lawyer.

The man who claimed he wanted to protect the truth.

The man who helped her discover her father’s secret.

But now he was standing in the hidden passage.

Following them.

Emily stepped back.

“Michael?”

He looked at her sadly.

“I hoped you would never find this place.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You lied to her.”

Michael sighed.

“I protected her.”

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“By following me?”

Michael looked at the letter in her hand.

“You don’t understand what Daniel discovered.”

Emily held the letter close.

“Then explain.”

Michael was silent.

Then he said:

“Your father discovered that the Harrison empire was built on a lie.”

Emily looked confused.

“What kind of lie?”

Michael’s expression became serious.

“A lie involving your grandfather.”

The old mansion suddenly felt colder.

Vanessa looked at Michael.

“You can’t tell her.”

Michael looked at her.

“She has a right to know.”

Emily stepped forward.

“Know what?”

Michael took a deep breath.

“Your grandfather didn’t leave his fortune to Daniel.”

A pause.

“He left everything to you.”

Emily stared.

“But I wasn’t born when he died.”

“Exactly.”

Michael looked at her.

“That’s why someone changed the documents.”

Emily’s heart raced.

“Someone forged my grandfather’s will?”

Michael nodded.

“And Daniel found proof.”

“Who did it?”

Michael looked toward Vanessa.

Then toward Emily.

His next words changed everything.

“The person who forged the will…”

He paused.

“Is still controlling Harrison Enterprises today.”

Emily felt a wave of anger.

“Who?”

Michael looked at her.

Before he could answer—

The mansion lights suddenly turned on.

A voice came through the old security speakers.

A voice Emily recognized.

Charles Harrison.

“Emily.”

Everyone froze.

Charles continued.

“I know you’re in the mansion.”

Emily looked at Vanessa.

Then Michael.

The voice continued:

“Come out before you discover something you cannot undo.”

Emily’s expression hardened.

For the first time, she understood.

This was bigger than a stolen necklace.

Bigger than Vanessa.

Bigger than her father’s disappearance.

Someone had spent twenty-four years protecting a secret.

And now Emily was standing at the center of it.

She looked at Michael.

“Is he the enemy?”

Michael didn’t answer.

But his silence was enough.

Because somewhere inside the mansion…

Charles Harrison was waiting.

May you like

And he knew Emily had found the truth.

To be continued…
