Chapter 7 — The Old Harrison Mansion

Chapter 7 — The Old Harrison Mansion
The road to the old Harrison mansion was darker than Emily expected.
Rain poured against the windshield as she drove through the empty countryside, the small key Sarah had given her resting on the passenger seat.
A key to a house she had never seen.
A house connected to a father she never knew.
A past everyone had spent years hiding from her.
Emily tightened her grip on the steering wheel.

For most of her life, she had believed she was ordinary.
She had worked hard.
Built her own career.
Created a life without expecting anything from the Harrison family.
But tonight, everything had changed.
She wasn’t just Emily Carter anymore.
She was Daniel Harrison’s daughter.
And someone had spent twenty-four years trying to make sure nobody knew.
When she finally arrived, the old mansion appeared through the fog.
The Harrison estate had once been magnificent.
But this property was different.
The paint was faded.
The garden was overgrown.
The windows were covered in dust.
It looked abandoned.
Forgotten.
Just like the truth.
Emily stepped out of the car and walked toward the front door.
She held the key in her hand.
For a moment, she hesitated.
A strange feeling came over her.
As if someone was watching her.
She looked around.
Nothing.
Only the sound of rain.
Emily inserted the key into the lock.
The door opened immediately.
Inside, the air smelled like old wood and forgotten memories.
She turned on her flashlight.
The mansion was filled with furniture covered in white sheets.
Family portraits lined the walls.
Generation after generation of Harrisons.
Powerful.
Successful.
Untouchable.
Until Daniel.
Emily walked deeper into the house.
She found a large portrait above the fireplace.
A young man stood there.
Daniel Harrison.
Her father.
She had only seen a few pictures of him before.
But this was different.
This portrait showed a man who looked confident.
Kind.
Almost like the person she had always imagined.
Emily touched the frame.
“Why did you leave me?”
Her voice echoed through the empty room.
Then she noticed something.
A small mark carved into the wooden frame.
A symbol.
The same symbol that appeared on the back of the old necklace.
Emily moved closer.
Behind the portrait, she found a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small box.
Her heart raced.
She opened it.
Inside were several items.
A handwritten letter.
A flash drive.
And an old family photograph.
Emily picked up the letter first.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the name at the bottom made her freeze.
Daniel.
She opened it carefully.
The first line immediately caught her attention.
“If you are reading this, then they failed to stop you.”
Emily held her breath.
She continued reading.
“My daughter, Emily…”
Her hands began shaking.
He had written to her.
Not knowing if she would ever see it.
“I am sorry I could not be the father you deserved.”
Emily closed her eyes.
For years, she had wondered if he cared.
Now she finally had the answer.
He did.
“I never left because I wanted to. I left because someone inside this family discovered the truth about you.”
Emily continued.
“You are not just my daughter. You are the rightful heir to what your grandfather built.”
Her eyes widened.
The inheritance.
The shares.
Everything Michael had mentioned.
Daniel knew.
“But money is not the reason I hid you.”
Emily kept reading.
“I hid you because I discovered someone was willing to destroy anyone who stood in their way.”
A cold feeling moved through her.
She looked around the dark mansion.
“Trust very few people, Emily.”
The next sentence made her stop.
“The person who betrayed me is someone you have already met.”
Emily stared at the page.
Someone she had already met.
Her mind immediately went through every person involved.
Vanessa.
Charles.
Michael.
Sarah.
Everyone had secrets.
Then the letter continued.
“The evidence is hidden in this house. But before you find it, remember this…”
Emily leaned closer.
“The person who appears to hate you the most may be the one trying to protect you.”
Emily frowned.
What did that mean?
Suddenly—
A noise came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Someone was inside.
Emily quickly folded the letter and turned off her flashlight.
She stood silently in the darkness.
The footsteps moved closer.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone knew she was there.
Emily grabbed the nearest object she could find.
The footsteps stopped outside the room.
The door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Then the door slowly opened.
Emily prepared herself.
A figure entered.
She raised her hand.
But before she could strike, a familiar voice whispered:
“Emily… wait.”
She froze.
The person stepped into the light.
It was Vanessa.
Emily stared in shock.
“What are you doing here?”
Vanessa looked exhausted.
Different from the confident woman at the gala.
She looked afraid.
“I came to warn you.”
Emily laughed coldly.
“After framing me?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I know you hate me.”
“You’re right.”
Vanessa accepted the answer.
“But if you stay here tonight…”
She looked around the mansion.
“Someone will come for you.”
Emily stepped closer.
“Who?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“The same person who killed Daniel Harrison.”
The room became silent.
Emily stared at her.
“You know who killed my father?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Yes.”
“Then tell me.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.
“I can’t.”
Emily’s anger rose.
“You can’t or you won’t?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Because if I tell you…”
She swallowed.
“They’ll know I betrayed them.”
Emily narrowed her eyes.
“Who are they?”
Before Vanessa could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs.
Both women turned.
Someone had broken into the mansion.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“They found us.”
Emily grabbed the letter.
“What do we do?”
Vanessa looked at her.
For the first time, they weren’t enemies.
They were two people facing the same danger.
“Run.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the sound.
“I spent my whole life running from a truth I didn’t know.”
She held the letter tightly.
“I’m done running.”
The footsteps below grew louder.
May you like
And whoever had entered the mansion was coming for them.
To be continued…
