Chapter 16 — The Harrison Family Secret

Chapter 16 — The Harrison Family Secret
The factory fell silent after Charles Harrison disappeared.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Everyone was waiting for Daniel.
Emily stood in front of the man she had spent her entire life searching for.
Her father.
The man who had written her letters.

The man who had sacrificed everything to protect her.
But now…
He was hiding something too.
“What did you find?”
Emily asked again.
Her voice was quieter this time.
But more serious.
Daniel looked at her.
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to tell her everything.
Then he looked away.
“Not here.”
Emily’s expression changed.
“No.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“I’m done hearing that.”
She looked around the factory.
“This place was full of secrets for twenty years.”
She pointed toward the documents.
“Everyone kept saying they were protecting me.”
Her eyes met Daniel’s.
“But all it did was leave me with more questions.”
Daniel took a slow breath.
“You’re right.”
The answer surprised her.
“I should have told you sooner.”
Emily waited.
“So tell me now.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
She nodded.
“It’s time.”
Daniel walked toward the old office desk.
He opened a hidden drawer beneath it.
Inside was a small black notebook.
Emily recognized it immediately.
“The same symbol.”
The notebook had the Harrison family mark engraved on the cover.
Daniel picked it up carefully.
“This belonged to my father.”
Emily frowned.
“Your father?”
Daniel nodded.
“Your grandfather.”
He opened the notebook.
“The truth about the Harrisons started long before me.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What did he write?”
Daniel looked at the pages.
“Everything.”
He turned the notebook toward Emily.
Inside were handwritten records.
Old agreements.
Names.
Dates.
And one sentence written in bold:
THE HARRISON LEGACY WAS BUILT ON A SECRET.
Emily looked up.
“What secret?”
Daniel closed the notebook.
“A secret about how the company was created.”
Michael stepped closer.
“You mean the rumors?”
Emily looked at him.
“What rumors?”
Michael hesitated.
Daniel answered.
“For decades, people believed Harrison Enterprises was built only through hard work.”
He looked at the old factory.
“But that wasn’t the complete story.”
Emily waited.
“My grandfather made a deal.”
“With who?”
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“With someone who had power.”
The factory became quiet.
“What kind of power?”
Daniel looked at the notebook.
“Political power. Financial power. Influence.”
Emily frowned.
“And what did they want?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Control.”
A cold feeling moved through her.
“Over Harrison Enterprises?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He paused.
“Over everything the company could influence.”
Emily looked confused.
“So my grandfather made a deal with powerful people?”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
Daniel turned a page.
“And then he regretted it.”
Claire spoke softly.
“He realized the deal created something dangerous.”
Emily looked at her.
“What?”
Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.
“A network.”
The word hung in the air.
“A group of people who controlled businesses, information, and decisions from behind the scenes.”
Michael nodded.
“Your grandfather tried to break away.”
Daniel continued.
“But he couldn’t.”
Emily looked at the notebook.
“And Charles knew about this?”
Daniel nodded.
“Charles found the records years later.”
“And he wanted the power?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked down.
“That’s why Daniel disappeared.”
Emily looked at her.
“Because Charles wanted the network?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Because Charles wanted to expose it.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
Daniel’s words shocked everyone.
“Charles was not always the enemy.”
Vanessa looked surprised.
Daniel continued.
“Years ago, Charles discovered the same truth I did.”
“Then why did he betray you?”
Daniel looked at the notebook.
“Because he changed.”
“How?”
Daniel sighed.
“He started believing that the only way to defeat powerful people was to become more powerful than them.”
Emily understood.
“He became the thing he hated.”
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.”
Michael looked at the documents.
“So Charles didn’t create the problem.”
“No.”
Daniel closed the notebook.
“He inherited it.”
Emily looked at him.
“And now?”
Daniel looked toward the factory doors.
“Now the people behind it know you exist.”
A silence followed.
Emily felt the weight of those words.
The necklace.
The accusation.
The hidden inheritance.
Everything had led to this moment.
“Who are they?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t know all their names.”
Emily frowned.
“But you know someone.”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he pulled out another photograph.
Emily looked down.
It showed a group of people standing together.
Her grandfather.
Charles.
Daniel.
And several powerful strangers.
One face caught her attention.
A face she recognized.
Someone she had seen before.
Her heart dropped.
“No…”
Claire looked at her.
“What?”
Emily pointed at the picture.
“This person.”
Everyone leaned closer.
The man standing beside her grandfather was not a stranger.
He was someone who had been helping her since the beginning.
Someone who had claimed to be searching for the truth.
Someone who had guided her through the mystery.
Michael Reed.
The room went silent.
Emily slowly turned.
“Michael?”
Michael’s face changed.
He knew the truth had finally arrived.
“I can explain.”
Emily stared at him.
“You were there.”
Michael said nothing.
“You knew my grandfather.”
Silence.
“You knew my father.”
More silence.
Emily’s voice became cold.
“You knew everything.”
Michael lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Vanessa stepped back.
“Michael…”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
Michael looked exhausted.
“Because I was trying to fix what my family started.”
Emily froze.
“Your family?”
Michael looked at her.
Then he said the words nobody expected.
“My last name isn’t Reed.”
A pause.
“My real name is Michael Harrison.”
Everyone froze.
Emily stared.
Another Harrison.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Michael looked at her.
“I am your cousin.”
The factory went completely silent.
And then…
Emily realized something.
The enemy wasn’t just outside the family.
May you like
The enemy was the family itself.
To be continued…
