Chapter 11 — The Father Who Never Left

Chapter 11 — The Father Who Never Left

The video ended.

But Emily couldn’t move.

She stood in the old bedroom, staring at the black screen of her phone.

Her father.

Daniel Harrison.

Alive.

The man she had spent her entire life believing was gone.

The man she had imagined countless times.

The man whose absence had shaped every decision she ever made.

He was alive.

Or at least, he had been when that video was recorded.

“Emily…”

Vanessa’s voice pulled her back.

Emily slowly turned around.

Her expression was different now.

The shock was gone.

Only anger remained.

“You knew.”

Nobody answered.

Emily looked at Charles.

“You knew my father survived.”

Charles looked down.

Then she looked at Michael.

“You knew too.”

Michael’s silence confirmed it.

Emily laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone knew except me.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Emily, listen—”

“No.”

She raised her hand.

“I’m tired of listening.”

Her voice shook.

“I spent years thinking my father abandoned me.”

She looked at the video again.

“But he was alive.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And you all let me hate him.”

Charles looked guilty.

“We were trying to protect you.”

Emily turned toward him.

“From what?”

Nobody answered.

“From the truth?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She looked around the room.

“You were protecting yourselves.”

Before anyone could respond, the phone buzzed again.

Another message.

Emily looked down.

Unknown Number:

“If you want to find Daniel Harrison, come to the place where it all started.”

A location appeared.

Emily recognized the address immediately.

The old Harrison factory.

The place where the company had first been built.

Michael looked over her shoulder.

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“No?”

“That place is dangerous.”

She stared.

“You know where it is.”

Michael hesitated.

That was all she needed.

“You’ve been there.”

Michael didn’t answer.

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“What happened there?”

Charles spoke quietly.

“That factory is where Daniel discovered the truth.”

Emily looked at him.

“What truth?”

Charles walked toward the window.

“The company wasn’t just losing money.”

He paused.

“Someone was secretly using Harrison Enterprises for illegal financial transactions.”

Emily felt a chill.

“And Daniel found out?”

“Yes.”

Michael added:

“He found documents proving someone inside the company was moving money through hidden accounts.”

“Who?”

Again, silence.

Emily looked at Vanessa.

“You know.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I know part of it.”

“Tell me.”

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“The person behind it was someone Daniel trusted.”

Emily waited.

“Someone who was close to the family.”

Michael looked away.

“Someone who knew every weakness.”

Emily’s mind raced.

There were only a few people who had that kind of access.

Charles.

Michael.

Vanessa.

Then Emily remembered Daniel’s letter.

“The person who appears to hate you the most may be the one trying to protect you.”

She looked at Vanessa.

“You.”

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

“You hated me publicly.”

Emily stepped closer.

“You accused me. You tried to destroy my reputation.”

Vanessa looked hurt.

“But privately…”

Emily studied her.

“You were protecting me.”

Vanessa didn’t deny it.

After a long silence, she whispered:

“Yes.”

Everyone looked shocked.

Emily stared.

“Why?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because I failed your father.”

The room became quiet.

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel asked me to protect you if anything happened to him.”

Emily’s expression changed.

“You knew him after he disappeared?”

Vanessa nodded.

“I helped him escape.”

Michael looked at her.

“You never told anyone.”

“No.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because someone was watching me too.”

Emily felt overwhelmed.

The enemy wasn’t just hiding in the shadows.

They were everywhere.

Suddenly, the lights in the mansion flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire house went dark.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone froze.

Michael immediately reached for his phone.

“No signal.”

Charles looked worried.

“That’s impossible.”

Emily listened carefully.

Footsteps.

Someone was moving through the mansion.

But this time…

They weren’t trying to hide.

A voice came through the security speakers.

A voice Emily had never heard before.

“Emily Carter.”

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

The voice continued.

“You have spent your entire life searching for answers.”

A pause.

“Tonight, you will finally get them.”

Emily stood still.

The voice became colder.

“But you need to understand something.”

Another pause.

“Your father didn’t disappear because he discovered a secret.”

Emily’s heart raced.

“He disappeared because he created one.”

The room went silent.

Michael whispered:

“No…”

The voice continued.

“And the person who helped him hide that secret…”

A long pause.

“Is your mother.”

Emily froze.

Her mother?

Impossible.

The speaker crackled.

Then the final words came:

“Come to the factory if you want to know why Daniel Harrison abandoned you.”

The message ended.

Emily looked at the others.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone had the same question.

What secret could be powerful enough…

To make Daniel Harrison disappear?

And why would Claire Carter help him?

Emily picked up her coat.

“I’m going to the factory.”

Michael stepped forward.

“You can’t go alone.”

Emily looked at him.

“For years, I was alone.”

She opened the door.

“I survived.”

Vanessa followed.

“I’m coming with you.”

Emily looked back.

The woman who had tried to ruin her life was now the only person she trusted.

Almost.

Then Charles spoke.

“Emily.”

She stopped.

Charles looked at her with fear.

“If you find Daniel…”

A pause.

“Be prepared.”

“For what?”

Charles lowered his voice.

“For the possibility that the man you’re searching for…”

He swallowed.

“Is not the man you think he is.”

Emily stared at him.

Then she walked into the darkness.

The truth was waiting.

And this time…

May you like

She wasn’t afraid of what she would find.

To be continued…
