Chapter 4 — The Hidden Daughter of Harrison

Chapter 4 — The Hidden Daughter of Harrison

The words echoed through the ballroom.

“He was a Harrison.”

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Emily stood completely still.

She had spent her entire life wondering about the man who had given her life and disappeared before she was old enough to remember him.

Her mother had always avoided the subject.

Whenever Emily asked about her father, Claire Carter would simply say:

“Some truths are dangerous until the right person is ready to hear them.”

Emily had always thought those words were meant to protect her.

Now she realized they were meant to prepare her.

“A Harrison?” Mr. Harrison repeated.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

Vanessa looked down.

She knew the secret had finally escaped.

Emily stepped closer.

“My father was a member of this family?”

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

She looked around the ballroom.

At the people watching.

At the family portraits hanging on the walls.

At the legacy she had spent years protecting.

Then she finally spoke.

“Your father was Daniel Harrison.”

The name shocked everyone.

Mr. Harrison’s face lost all color.

“No…”

Emily looked at him.

“You knew him?”

Charles Harrison slowly lowered himself into a chair.

Daniel.

His youngest brother.

The one person nobody was allowed to mention.

The man whose name had vanished from the Harrison family history.

“He died twenty-four years ago,” Charles said quietly.

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

Emily felt her chest tighten.

“My father died?”

Nobody answered.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

She had spent years imagining him.

Wondering if he was alive somewhere.

Wondering if he had abandoned her.

But now she discovered he had been gone all along.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?” Emily asked.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because your existence was supposed to remain hidden.”

The guests gasped.

Emily’s expression changed.

“Hidden?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Daniel was supposed to inherit part of the Harrison empire. He was brilliant, but he didn’t care about money or power. He wanted a different life.”

“And my mother?”

Vanessa was silent.

Emily’s voice became stronger.

“What about my mother?”

Vanessa finally answered.

“Your mother was the woman he loved.”

Mr. Harrison closed his eyes.

Memories seemed to return.

“I remember…”

Everyone looked at him.

Charles continued.

“Daniel wanted to leave the family business. He wanted to marry Claire.”

Emily felt tears forming in her eyes.

“Then why didn’t he?”

Charles looked toward Vanessa.

Because he already knew the answer.

Vanessa’s face became tense.

“I tried to stop it.”

The room went silent.

Emily stared at her.

“You?”

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I was engaged to Daniel.”

A wave of shock moved through the crowd.

“You were going to marry my father?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s voice became colder.

“But then Claire appeared.”

Emily shook her head.

“So you destroyed their relationship?”

Vanessa looked offended.

“You don’t know what happened.”

“Then tell me.”

Vanessa looked at the necklace on the table.

“That necklace was not just jewelry.”

Emily waited.

“It was a promise.”

Mr. Harrison looked confused.

“A promise?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Daniel gave it to Claire when he promised he would leave everything behind and start a new life with her.”

Emily touched the necklace carefully.

“So you stole it.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I took it back.”

“No.”

Emily’s voice was sharp.

“You stole it.”

The room became uncomfortable.

Vanessa continued.

“After Daniel died, I believed the necklace was the last thing connecting him to Claire.”

“And you thought removing it would erase my mother?”

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Emily stepped closer.

“But you failed.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because my mother kept the truth.”

Emily held up the photograph.

“And she left me enough proof.”

Suddenly, a man’s voice came from the entrance.

“Not enough proof.”

Everyone turned.

A tall man stood near the doorway.

He wore a dark suit and carried a folder in his hand.

Mr. Harrison immediately recognized him.

“Michael?”

Michael Reed walked into the ballroom.

The family lawyer.

The man who had handled Harrison legal matters for over fifteen years.

He looked at Emily.

“I’m sorry, but there are things you still don’t know.”

Emily frowned.

“What things?”

Michael placed the folder on the table.

“Things your mother never told you.”

Vanessa looked shocked.

“You knew?”

Michael nodded.

“I knew about Daniel. I knew about Claire. And I knew about Emily.”

Emily’s heart stopped.

“You knew who I was?”

Michael looked at her sadly.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you say nothing?”

Before Michael could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The entire ballroom fell into darkness.

People screamed.

Glass shattered somewhere near the entrance.

Then, in the darkness, everyone heard a voice.

A voice coming from the security system.

“Emily Carter… if you want the truth about your father, come alone.”

The lights came back on.

But Michael’s folder was gone.

May you like

And so was Vanessa.

To be continued…
