Chapter 14 — The Parents Who Were Never Gone

Chapter 14 — The Parents Who Were Never Gone

Emily couldn’t move.

She couldn’t breathe.

She couldn’t even believe what her eyes were seeing.

For years, she had carried the pain of losing both parents.

Her mother.

Her father.

Two people she thought had disappeared from her life forever.

But now…

They were standing in front of her.

Alive.

Claire Carter looked older than Emily remembered.

There were more lines on her face.

More sadness in her eyes.

But it was her.

Emily whispered again.

“Mom…”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Emily.”

That single word broke something inside her.

Emily had imagined this moment a thousand times.

She imagined what she would say if she ever saw her mother again.

She imagined anger.

Questions.

Accusations.

But now that Claire was standing in front of her…

All Emily could feel was pain.

“You’re alive.”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

Emily stepped back.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“No, you don’t get to just say yes.”

The room became silent.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“You let me grieve you.”

“I know.”

“You let me spend years thinking I had no family.”

Claire began crying.

“I know.”

Emily looked away.

Those words hurt more than an excuse would have.

Because Claire wasn’t denying it.

She was accepting the damage she had caused.

“Why?”

Emily’s voice cracked.

“Why would you do that to me?”

Claire took a step forward.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”

Emily shook her head.

“Everyone says that.”

Her eyes moved around the room.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.”

She looked at Claire.

“But nobody asked what I wanted.”

Claire nodded sadly.

“You’re right.”

The honesty surprised Emily.

Claire continued.

“You deserved the truth.”

A voice came from behind her.

“Emily.”

She froze.

That voice.

The voice from the video.

The voice she never thought she would hear.

Slowly, a man stepped forward.

Daniel Harrison.

Her father.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably him.

Emily stared.

For a moment, she saw the man from the photographs.

The man her mother loved.

The man who had written her a letter.

The man who had spent years hidden away.

Daniel looked at her with tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily’s face hardened.

“That’s all?”

Daniel stopped.

She stepped closer.

“You disappear for my entire life.”

Her voice shook.

“Then you come back and say you’re sorry?”

Daniel looked down.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.”

Emily stared at him.

“Why did you leave?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because I had no choice.”

“No.”

Emily shook her head.

“You always had a choice.”

Daniel looked at her.

“And I chose you.”

The words silenced her.

Daniel continued.

“The night I disappeared, I discovered someone inside Harrison Enterprises was planning to destroy everything.”

Emily listened.

“I found evidence of financial crimes, illegal deals, and manipulation inside the company.”

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Emily noticed.

“Who was it?”

Daniel looked at Claire.

Then Vanessa.

Then Michael.

Finally, he answered.

“Charles.”

Emily froze.

“Charles Harrison?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandfather’s trusted son.”

Michael looked shocked.

“But Charles protected the family.”

Daniel looked at him.

“That is what he wanted everyone to believe.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel…”

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry for what happened.”

Vanessa looked away.

Emily noticed the emotion between them.

There was history.

Pain.

Regret.

“You all knew each other.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Emily looked confused.

“Then why did everyone act like enemies?”

Claire answered softly.

“Because Charles made sure we believed we were.”

Emily turned.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel walked toward an old table and placed a folder on it.

“Charles manipulated everyone.”

He opened it.

Inside were letters.

Documents.

Photographs.

“He convinced Vanessa that Claire betrayed her.”

Vanessa looked down.

“He convinced Claire that Vanessa wanted revenge.”

Claire nodded.

“And he convinced me that nobody could be trusted.”

Emily looked at the evidence.

“So he destroyed all of you.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Michael stared at the documents.

“But why?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Power.”

A cold silence filled the room.

“He wanted Harrison Enterprises.”

Emily looked at the papers.

“And my inheritance?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your grandfather left everything to you.”

She remembered Michael’s words.

The rightful heir.

Daniel continued.

“Charles knew that if you were found, his control over the company would disappear.”

Emily clenched her fists.

“So he tried to erase me.”

“Yes.”

Daniel’s expression became painful.

“That’s why I hid you.”

Emily looked at him.

“You could have told me.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I wanted to.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because every time I tried, someone got closer to finding you.”

Emily was quiet.

Then she asked the question she had been avoiding.

“Did you ever try to come back?”

Daniel nodded.

“Many times.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Then why didn’t you?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because every time I came close…”

He paused.

“Someone tried to kill me.”

The room went silent.

Emily felt the weight of those words.

Her father wasn’t missing.

He was hunted.

Suddenly, Michael’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at him.

He answered.

His face changed immediately.

“What?”

Emily noticed.

“What happened?”

Michael slowly lowered the phone.

His expression was terrified.

“Charles found us.”

Daniel’s face became serious.

“How?”

Michael looked at Emily.

“Because someone sent him our location.”

Everyone became silent.

Emily looked around the room.

Someone had betrayed them.

Again.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“There’s only one person who knew we were coming here.”

Everyone slowly turned.

Their eyes landed on Michael.

Emily’s heart sank.

“Michael…”

He looked shocked.

“No.”

But before anyone could say another word…

The factory doors exploded open.

Security forces rushed inside.

And standing behind them…

Was Charles Harrison.

Alive.

Calm.

Smiling.

Charles looked directly at Emily.

“I see you finally met your parents.”

He paused.

May you like

“Now it’s time you learned why they should never have found you.”

To be continued…
