Chapter 3 — The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Chapter 3 — The Woman Who Knew Too Much
The message on Emily’s phone remained visible on the screen.
“If you want to know who your father really was, go to the Harrison Foundation Gala.”
No one in the ballroom spoke.
The music had stopped.
The laughter had disappeared.
The charity event that was supposed to celebrate generosity had turned into a place where decades of secrets were being dragged into the light.

Emily looked around the room, studying every face.
Some guests looked confused.
Others looked uncomfortable.
But one person looked terrified.
Vanessa.
“You know something,” Emily said quietly.
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
Emily didn’t move.
“You knew my mother.”
The room reacted immediately.
Whispers spread through the crowd.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I barely knew her.”
“But you recognized her name.”
Vanessa’s expression froze.
Only for a moment.
But it was enough.
Mr. Harrison noticed.
“Vanessa.”
His voice carried disappointment.
“Tell me the truth.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don’t know what she’s trying to do.”
Emily stepped forward.
“I’m not trying to ruin you.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“No?”
She pointed around the ballroom.
“You exposed me in front of everyone. You made me look like a criminal.”
Emily’s eyes hardened.
“You made yourself look like a criminal.”
The guests watched silently.
Emily took another document from the envelope.
“This is a letter my mother wrote.”
Vanessa immediately became tense.
“What letter?”
Emily opened it carefully.
“She wrote this twenty years ago.”
Mr. Harrison looked confused.
“To who?”
Emily looked at him.
“To Thomas Harrison.”
The name hit the room like a shockwave.
Everyone knew Thomas Harrison had died years ago.
Charles Harrison’s younger brother.
A brilliant businessman.
A man whose life had been surrounded by rumors.
Emily began reading.
“Thomas, I know you want to tell the truth, but I’m afraid of what will happen if Vanessa finds out…”
The moment Vanessa heard her name, she stepped forward.
“Stop.”
Emily looked up.
“Why?”
Vanessa’s voice became desperate.
“Because you don’t understand.”
Emily folded the letter.
“Then explain.”
Vanessa said nothing.
That silence told everyone more than words could.
Mr. Harrison stared at her.
“Vanessa.”
She looked away.
“Charles, this happened a long time ago.”
“A long time ago?”
His voice became sharper.
“My brother’s name has been hidden from our family records for years. A woman appears with proof that connects him to her mother, and you expect me to ignore it?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.
“She doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”
Emily stepped closer.
“Then why are you afraid?”
Vanessa looked at her.
For the first time, Emily saw something behind the anger.
Fear.
Real fear.
Emily continued.
“My mother never told me who my father was.”
The room became quiet again.
“She only told me one thing.”
She looked at the necklace.
“She said the person who owned this necklace would know the truth.”
Mr. Harrison stared at the jewelry.
His hands slowly tightened.
“Where is the necklace now?”
Everyone looked down.
The necklace that had caused the entire scene was still lying on the evidence table.
But something was wrong.
The security guard checked the table.
Then his face changed.
“Mr. Harrison…”
Everyone turned.
“What is it?”
The guard swallowed.
“The necklace…”
He looked nervous.
“It’s not the original necklace.”
A wave of shock moved through the ballroom.
Vanessa’s face turned completely white.
Emily stared at the necklace.
“What?”
The guard carefully picked it up.
“The diamonds are real, but the engraving on the back is different.”
Mr. Harrison immediately walked closer.
“Impossible.”
The guard turned the necklace around.
“There should be a family mark engraved here.”
He pointed.
“But it’s missing.”
Emily looked at Vanessa.
“So you didn’t just frame me.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“You replaced the necklace.”
The guests began whispering louder.
Mr. Harrison looked furious.
“Vanessa.”
She finally lost control.
“You don’t understand!”
Everyone became silent.
Vanessa realized she had revealed too much.
Emily watched carefully.
“Then help us understand.”
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the exit.
For a second, it looked like she wanted to run.
But Mr. Harrison stopped her.
“Don’t even think about leaving.”
Vanessa slowly turned back.
“You want the truth?”
She looked at Emily.
“Fine.”
Her voice shook.
“But once you know everything…”
She paused.
“You may regret finding it.”
Emily didn’t blink.
“Try me.”
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Your mother wasn’t just someone Thomas knew.”
The room went silent.
“She was the reason Thomas left this family.”
Emily’s heart raced.
“What are you saying?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“The truth is…”
She swallowed.
“Your father was never a stranger.”
A shocked silence filled the ballroom.
May you like
“He was a Harrison.”
To be continued…
