Chapter 17 — The Cousin Who Hid the Truth

Chapter 17 — The Cousin Who Hid the Truth

The factory felt smaller than before.

The walls seemed to close in.

Emily stood motionless, staring at Michael.

Or whoever he really was.

For hours, she had believed she was finally uncovering the truth.

But every answer created another mystery.

Every person she trusted had another name.

Another secret.

Another reason to hide things from her.

“My cousin?”

Her voice was almost a whisper.

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

Emily laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because she was exhausted.

“Of course.”

She looked around.

“Another Harrison.”

Her eyes returned to Michael.

“Another person who knew everything.”

Michael accepted the anger in her voice.

“I understand why you hate me right now.”

“Hate?”

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t even know what to feel.”

She stepped closer.

“You were the person who helped me.”

Michael looked down.

“I was.”

“You were the person who told me the truth.”

“I tried.”

“No.”

Emily’s voice became sharper.

“You told me pieces of the truth.”

Michael said nothing.

“Enough to keep me searching.”

She pointed at the photograph.

“But never enough to understand.”

Michael sighed.

“You’re right.”

The honesty surprised her.

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Did you know?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Her expression changed.

“You knew Michael was a Harrison?”

“Yes.”

“And you let him stay close to me?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I trusted him.”

Emily looked at Michael.

“Why?”

Michael took a deep breath.

“Because my father was part of the problem.”

The room became silent.

Emily stared.

“Your father?”

Michael nodded.

“My father was one of the people who helped build the system your grandfather created.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Your father tried to destroy me.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Emily watched him carefully.

“Then why help me?”

Michael looked at her.

“Because I spent my entire life trying to undo what my family did.”

He walked toward the table and placed a folder down.

Inside were documents.

Old records.

Financial reports.

Photographs.

“I was the one who leaked information to Daniel.”

Emily looked surprised.

“You helped my father?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hide your identity?”

Michael looked away.

“Because if Charles knew I was working against him, I would have been eliminated.”

Vanessa frowned.

“You were afraid of Charles?”

Michael nodded.

“Everyone was.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

“That’s why I trusted him.”

Emily looked at Michael.

“But you still lied to me.”

Michael accepted it.

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

“I was afraid that if you knew who I was, you would never trust me.”

Emily shook her head.

“And now?”

Michael looked at her.

“Now I know I was wrong.”

A long silence followed.

Then Emily picked up one of the documents.

“What is this?”

Michael looked serious.

“The final account records.”

She scanned the pages.

“These are from Harrison Enterprises.”

“Yes.”

“And what do they prove?”

Michael hesitated.

“They prove Charles was not acting alone.”

Emily looked up.

“What?”

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Who?”

Michael pointed at the records.

“These transactions happened after Charles supposedly disappeared.”

Emily frowned.

“But Charles was still controlling things.”

“Yes.”

Michael nodded.

“But someone else was moving the money.”

Claire looked worried.

“Who?”

Michael slowly answered.

“The person who took control after Charles.”

The factory became quiet.

Emily looked at the documents again.

“There’s a signature.”

She studied it.

Then her face changed.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

Emily pointed.

“This signature…”

Everyone moved closer.

It was a name.

A name none of them expected.

Claire covered her mouth.

Vanessa stepped back.

Daniel stared in disbelief.

Because the person behind the final transactions was—

Sarah Carter.

Emily froze.

“My mother’s friend?”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

Emily shook her head.

“No. Sarah helped me.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Sarah was the one who gave you the key?”

Emily nodded.

Michael’s expression changed.

“Then she was closer to this than we realized.”

A sudden noise interrupted them.

Everyone turned.

The factory door opened.

Slowly.

A woman stepped inside.

Sarah.

The same woman who claimed she had protected Daniel.

The same woman who revealed the truth about his disappearance.

She looked at Emily.

And she knew.

They had found the documents.

“Sarah.”

Emily’s voice was cold.

“What is going on?”

Sarah stopped.

No one moved.

Then Sarah looked at Daniel.

“You told her.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Yes.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“I was afraid this day would come.”

Emily stared.

“Why is your name on these records?”

Sarah looked at the documents.

Then back at Emily.

“Because I was involved.”

The room went silent.

Michael reached for his phone.

Daniel looked shocked.

Vanessa whispered:

“Sarah…”

Emily felt betrayed again.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another lie.

But Sarah didn’t run.

She simply said:

“I never wanted power.”

Emily stared.

“Then what did you want?”

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“To protect Claire.”

Emily frowned.

“My mother?”

Sarah nodded.

“Because Claire was the only person who knew the entire truth.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What are you saying?”

Sarah looked at him.

“The night you disappeared…”

She paused.

“You weren’t the only person who vanished.”

Everyone waited.

Sarah continued:

“Someone else disappeared too.”

Emily felt a chill.

“Who?”

Sarah looked directly at her.

“Your grandfather.”

Silence.

Daniel froze.

“That’s impossible.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out an old photograph.

A photograph taken years after everyone believed he was dead.

Emily looked down.

Her heart stopped.

Because standing in the picture…

Was her grandfather.

Alive.

And beside him…

Was the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

Sarah whispered:

“The real enemy was never Charles.”

She looked at Emily.

May you like

“It was the man who taught him everything.”

To be continued…
