Chapter 9: The Grand Reveal

"No," Vanessa whispered, the blood completely draining from her face. Her legs went weak, and she had to grab her father’s arm to stop herself from collapsing. "No, that’s impossible. Daddy... Daddy, look at her!"
Julian was squinting against the bright spotlight, utterly confused by his daughter’s sudden panic. "Who is that? Why is she wearing Eleanor’s necklace? Where is Richard?"
"It’s her!" Vanessa hissed, her voice trembling with raw, unadulterated terror. "The beggar! The trash from the hotel lobby! The one I dragged across the floor!"
Julian ripped his arm away from his daughter, his face turning purple with rage. "Are you insane, Vanessa?! Look at her! That is not a homeless beggar!"
At the bottom of the stairs, Marcus Thorne stepped forward, tapping the microphone on the grand podium. The feedback whined sharply, commanding total silence in the massive room.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus’s deep voice echoed off the vaulted ceilings. "Allow me to introduce the rightful, legal, and sole owner of the Solmere Empire. The true heir. Miss Charlotte Vale."
The ballroom erupted into a frenzy of gasps, whispers, and stunned silence. The dead heir had returned. The ghost was real.
Charlotte stepped up to the podium, placing her manicured hands firmly on the wood. She looked out over the sea of the city's most powerful people. She didn't look bruised or battered anymore. She looked like a goddess of vengeance.
"Good evening," Charlotte’s voice rang out, crystal clear and commanding. "I know my presence comes as a shock. Rumors of my demise were... greatly exaggerated by individuals who sought to steal what my mother built. Those individuals have been removed from the board. Permanently."
The wealthy elite exchanged terrified glances. Everyone knew what "permanently" meant in the corporate world.
Charlotte’s eyes swept the room and locked dead onto the crimson dress standing in the center of the crowd. Vanessa flinched as if she had been physically struck.
"However," Charlotte continued, a dangerous smirk playing on her lips, "tonight is not just about the future of Solmere. Tonight is about transparency. It’s about holding the corrupt accountable. And there are some very special guests in attendance tonight who have been keeping secrets."
Charlotte gestured to the massive digital screens that lined the ballroom walls. Instantly, the screens flickered to life.
They didn't show the Solmere logo. They showed bank statements. Specifically, the offshore routing numbers, shell company names, and wire transfer receipts originating from Sterling Global.
Julian Sterling stopped breathing. His heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer. The entire room turned to look at the screens, and then, slowly, the crowd parted, stepping away from the Sterlings as if they were infected with a deadly plague.
"What is this?!" Vanessa shrieked, panic overriding her common sense. She pointed an accusing finger at the stage. "This is a lie! You’re a fraud! You’re just a street rat I put in her place!"
The crowd gasped at Vanessa’s outburst.

Charlotte didn't yell. She leaned closer to the microphone, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly soft register.
"Vanessa," Charlotte purred, the sound carrying across the dead-silent room. "I told you to vacate my properties. You didn't listen. So now, I'm taking everything."
