Chapter 3: The Ascent

The Solmere Hotel lobby had transformed from a sanctuary of luxury into a holding cell of high-stakes terror. The elites who had scoffed at Charlotte minutes ago were now frantically whispering, pulling out their phones to text their brokers, their lawyers, and the press. The dead heir had returned. The balance of power in the city was about to violently shift.

Caldwell was sobbing softly on the floor, surrounded by three heavily armed guards who suddenly remembered exactly who paid their salaries.

Charlotte didn’t wait around to bask in the shock. She had a strict timeline, and the element of surprise was evaporating by the second. She strode toward the private, gold-plated executive elevator at the far end of the lobby.

A sharp ding sounded as she swiped the black card again. The golden doors slid open.

"Miss Vale! Wait!"

Charlotte paused, glancing over her shoulder. An older man in a sharp charcoal suit was pushing his way through the stunned crowd. It was Marcus Thorne, the Solmere Empire’s Head of Global Security, and the only man Charlotte’s mother had trusted implicitly. Marcus had been away in London when the "accident" happened, sidelined by the board.

Seeing Charlotte standing there, bruised but unbroken, the hardened security veteran’s eyes welled with tears.

"You're alive," Marcus breathed, stopping a few feet away, dropping into a deep, respectful bow. "Thank God. The intel was right."

"Did you secure the perimeter, Marcus?" Charlotte asked, stepping into the elevator.

"The building is surrounded by my private operatives, Miss Vale. The local police have been instructed to stand down until we give the all-clear," Marcus said, stepping in beside her. He looked at her bruised face and bleeding hands. A dangerous, lethal anger flared in his eyes. "Who did this to you?"

"Collateral damage. We have bigger rats to exterminate," Charlotte said coldly. She reached out and pressed the button for the 85th floor—the boardroom. "Are they all up there?"

"Yes, ma'am. The emergency board meeting was called for 3:00 PM. They are currently voting on the final resolution to liquidate your mother’s private shares and divide the assets among themselves. Your Uncle Richard is leading the vote."

At the mention of her uncle, Charlotte’s jaw tightened. Richard Vale. The man who had bounced her on his knee when she was a child. The man who smiled warmly at her mother’s funeral while secretly holding the wirecutters that brought her plane down.

"How much time until the vote is finalized?" Charlotte asked as the elevator shot upward at a dizzying speed.

"Less than five minutes," Marcus replied, pulling a heavy, matte-black Glock from his shoulder holster and checking the chamber. "If they sign those papers, the asset transfer hits the offshore accounts instantly. It will take years of litigation to freeze the money."

"Then we won't let them sign," Charlotte said.

She stared at her reflection in the polished brass of the elevator doors. The girl who had been crying in hiding for three months was dead. The frightened daughter was gone. Staring back at her was a CEO, a predator ready to claim her territory.

"Marcus," she said softly.

"Yes, Miss Vale?"

"When those doors open... no one leaves that room. Understood?"

"With pleasure, ma'am."

The digital floor indicator flashed rapidly. 80... 81... 82... 83... 84...

Ding.

The doors slid open, revealing the ultra-modern, glass-walled penthouse level of the Solmere Tower. The reception area was empty, save for two executive assistants who looked up, their jaws dropping as they saw the dirty, bruised woman flanked by the armed Head of Security.

Charlotte didn't blink. She walked straight past them, her heavy combat boots leaving faint smudges on the imported white carpets, marching directly toward the massive, frosted-glass double doors of the central boardroom.

Behind those doors, the men who murdered her mother were celebrating.

Charlotte lifted her boot and kicked the double doors with every ounce of strength she had. The glass shattered, the heavy doors flying open and slamming against the walls like a thunderclap.
