Chapter 13: The Desperate Play

The rain was pouring in sheets, soaking the garbage-lined streets of the city's worst district.
Vanessa Sterling huddled under the broken awning of a closed pawn shop, shivering violently. She hadn't eaten in two days. People walked past her, ignoring her entirely, or shooting her looks of disgust. She was exactly what she had always mocked: a ghost on the street.
Desperation gnawed at her sanity. She couldn't survive like this. She needed a way back in.
As she pulled her ruined crimson dress tighter around her freezing body, a memory flashed in her mind. Months ago, late at night, she had overheard her father, Julian, arguing on the phone with his secret backer.
“Cross! If you don't send the rest of the funds, I’m locking you out. I still have the backdoor encryption codes to Solmere’s offshore development accounts!”
Vanessa gasped. The codes. Her father was deeply paranoid. He always kept physical copies of his ultimate leverage hidden in his private vault. But the FBI had seized the estate. The vault was gone.
Wait. Not the vault.
Vanessa’s eyes widened. Her father had bought her a cheap, ugly diamond locket for her sixteenth birthday that she had refused to wear. She had thrown it into the bottom of her designer purse. When the FBI confiscated her things at the gala, she had dropped her clutch in the chaos.
She stood up, ignoring the freezing rain. She knew exactly where she had kicked that clutch under a decorative table in the hotel lobby.
Three hours later, looking like a drowned rat, Vanessa managed to slip through the service entrance of the Solmere Hotel. Sneaking past the distracted kitchen staff, she crawled into the grand lobby. It was empty in the dead of night. She slid under the mahogany console table, her frantic fingers brushing against the velvet of her discarded clutch.
She opened it. The ugly locket was still there. She pried the back open. Inside, folded into a tiny, microscopic square, was a piece of waterproof paper covered in alphanumeric codes.
Vanessa let out a ragged, hysterical laugh. This was it. This was her ticket to destroy Charlotte Vale.
The next morning, the security guards at Vanguard Holdings headquarters tried to throw out the filthy woman screaming in their lobby.
"Let me go!" Vanessa shrieked. "Tell Alexander Cross I have the offshore backdoor to the Solmere Empire! Tell him Vanessa Sterling is here!"
Ten minutes later, Vanessa was sitting in Alexander Cross’s pristine, white marble office, leaving wet, dirty stains on his expensive Italian leather chair.
Alexander stared at the tiny piece of paper in his hands, a slow, wicked smile spreading across his face.
"Well, well, well," Alexander murmured, looking at the ragged socialite. "It seems Julian wasn't completely useless after all. These are the master override keys to Solmere’s international liquid asset accounts."

"I want ten million dollars," Vanessa demanded, her voice shaking but desperate. "And I want you to ruin Charlotte Vale. I want her begging on the street like I was."
Alexander laughed, a cold, heartless sound. "Oh, Vanessa. I’m going to do much more than ruin her. By midnight tonight, Charlotte Vale won't even have a company."
