Chapter 8: The Gala of Wolves

Friday night arrived, bringing with it the most anticipated social event the city had seen in a decade. The Solmere Grand Ballroom was a masterpiece of architectural wealth. Three-story-high crystal chandeliers rained warm light over floors made of imported Italian onyx. Waiters in white gloves circulated with trays of Dom Pérignon and Beluga caviar.

The room was packed with billionaires, tech moguls, politicians, and A-list celebrities. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the low hum of power networking.

A sleek black Maybach pulled up to the red carpet outside, and a frenzy of camera flashes erupted.

Vanessa Sterling stepped out, wearing a custom-made crimson gown that commanded attention. She posed for the paparazzi, blowing kisses, reveling in the blinding lights. Beside her, Julian Sterling puffed his chest out, adjusting his diamond cufflinks.

"Look at them," Vanessa whispered to her father as they walked up the grand staircase. "They’re all waiting to see who Richard chose as his inner circle. When they see us at the VIP table, they’ll all be begging for our scraps."

They entered the ballroom, immediately commanding attention. Julian began shaking hands with senators, subtly bragging about an "upcoming acquisition" that would shake the market.

Vanessa, meanwhile, strutted toward the center of the room. She spotted Marcus Thorne, the imposing Head of Security, standing near the VIP velvet ropes. Vanessa snapped her fingers at him.

"You! Security guard!" Vanessa barked, pointing at a spill of champagne on a nearby table. "Get someone to clean this up immediately. My dress is too expensive to be near a puddle."

Marcus slowly turned his head. His cold, deadpan eyes scanned Vanessa from head to toe. He didn't say a word. He didn't move. He simply stared at her with a look of such profound pity that Vanessa felt a sudden, inexplicable shiver run down her spine.

"Excuse me? Did you hear me?" Vanessa raised her voice, causing heads to turn. "I am Vanessa Sterling! I am a VIP guest of the new CEO!"

Marcus tapped his earpiece, ignoring her completely. "All teams, lock the perimeter. Alpha is inbound."

Suddenly, the soft classical orchestra music faded out. The massive crystal chandeliers dimmed to a dramatic, low glow. A single, blinding white spotlight snapped on, illuminating the grand, sweeping double staircase at the far end of the ballroom.

The crowd fell dead silent. The anticipation was electric. Everyone was waiting for Richard Vale to descend those stairs and claim his crown.

Julian Sterling grabbed two glasses of champagne, handing one to Vanessa. "Get ready to smile, sweetheart. Here comes our billion-dollar payday."

The heavy mahogany doors at the top of the stairs slowly clicked open.

But the person who stepped into the spotlight was not an older, gray-haired man in a suit.

It was a young woman.

She wore a breathtaking, midnight-black silk gown that clung to her figure like liquid shadows. Around her neck sat the legendary Solmere Diamond—a piece of jewelry worth more than the entire Sterling family’s net worth. Her dark hair was styled impeccably, falling over one shoulder.

And as she slowly descended the stairs, her sharp, piercing green eyes scanned the crowd with the cold, calculated authority of a queen surveying her subjects.

Vanessa’s champagne glass slipped from her hand, shattering against the onyx floor.
