Chapter 10: Checkmate in Public

The tension in the grand ballroom was suffocating. Every camera in the room was flashing, capturing the live destruction of one of the city’s most prominent families.

"Julian Sterling," Charlotte’s voice boomed over the speakers, cold and relentless as a judge handing down a death sentence. "Three months ago, you wired two million dollars to a mechanic in Geneva to sabotage my mother’s aircraft. You funded the murder of the woman who built your career."

"Lies!" Julian roared, spit flying from his mouth as he finally broke out of his shocked paralysis. He frantically looked around at his fellow billionaires, desperate for an ally. "This is a fabricated smear campaign! I demand my lawyers! I am leaving!"

He turned to run for the grand double doors.

"Open the doors," Charlotte commanded smoothly.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open. Standing in the threshold were not valets, but twelve heavily armed FBI agents in full tactical gear. Special Agent Reynolds stepped past them, holding up a federal arrest warrant.

"Julian Sterling," Reynolds announced loudly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and federal wire fraud. Hands behind your back."

Julian let out a pathetic, strangled cry as the agents slammed him against the onyx wall, forcefully pulling his arms behind him. The satisfying click of the handcuffs echoed perfectly into the silent ballroom.

"Daddy! No!" Vanessa screamed, sprinting toward him, but a female federal agent shoved her back roughly.

Vanessa stumbled backward in her custom crimson gown, falling hard onto the floor. The exact same marble-and-onyx floor she had dragged Charlotte across just days before.

She looked up at the stage. Charlotte was looking down at her, her face a mask of total indifference.

"You can't do this!" Vanessa sobbed, her mascara running down her face in ugly black streaks, her carefully curated socialite image completely shattered. "We have money! We have power! You can't just take it away!"

"You don't have money, Vanessa," Charlotte said quietly, leaning on the podium. She snapped her fingers.

On the massive screens, the bank statements vanished, replaced by a live feed of the stock market and property deeds.

"As of 4:00 PM today, my holding company successfully purchased all of Sterling Global’s toxic debt," Charlotte announced, educating the entire room on her absolute ruthlessness. "I have immediately called in the loans. Sterling Global is bankrupt. Your estate has been foreclosed on. Your bank accounts are frozen. The gown you are currently wearing legally belongs to me."

The crowd stared in absolute awe. In less than twenty-four hours, a twenty-two-year-old girl had returned from the dead, reclaimed a billion-dollar empire, and legally obliterated an entire dynasty without breaking a sweat.

Vanessa sat on the floor, shaking, weeping uncontrollably. She had nothing. No home, no father, no money. She was instantly reduced to the very thing she had accused Charlotte of being—a beggar.

"Marcus," Charlotte said, turning away from the microphone.

"Yes, Miss Vale?" Marcus smiled, stepping up beside her.

"Have security drag Miss Sterling out," Charlotte said softly, making sure Vanessa could read her lips. "Through the service elevator. Better yet, throw her out onto the street. People like her don't belong in a place like this."

As the guards grabbed a screaming, kicking Vanessa and dragged her across the beautiful floor, Charlotte looked out at the silent, terrified billionaires remaining in the room. They were all complicit in a broken system. Julian and Richard were just the beginning.

Charlotte raised her glass of champagne.

"Now," the young CEO smiled, her eyes gleaming with dark promise. "Who wants to talk about the future?"
