Chapter 11: Welcome to the Gutter

The cold night air bit into Vanessa Sterling’s bare shoulders as the heavy service doors of the Solmere Hotel slammed shut behind her.

She stumbled onto the dirty, wet pavement of the back alley, the heels of her ruined designer shoes snapping against a metal grate. Her custom crimson gown—now legally the property of Charlotte Vale—was torn at the hem, stained with spilled champagne and alleyway grime.

"Wait! You can’t leave me out here!" Vanessa screamed, pounding her fists against the unyielding steel door. "Do you know who I am?! I am a Sterling!"

No one answered. The only sound was the distant wail of a police siren, likely carrying her father to a federal holding cell.

Vanessa patted her pockets. Nothing. Her diamond-encrusted phone had been confiscated by the FBI. Her platinum credit cards were frozen. Her trust fund was gone. She didn't even have a dollar for the subway. The glittering skyline she had always looked down upon suddenly felt like a cage, towering over her, indifferent to her existence.

For the first time in her twenty-four years of life, Vanessa Sterling was entirely, completely alone.

High above the alley, in the absolute luxury of the Solmere penthouse, Charlotte Vale was completely at peace. She stood by the window, a cup of black coffee in her hand, watching the morning sun break over the city.

"The board has been purged, Miss Vale," Marcus Thorne announced, stepping into the office. He looked exhausted but deeply satisfied. "The FBI raided Richard’s properties, and Julian Sterling was denied bail. They’re both facing life in federal prison."

"And the Sterling estate?" Charlotte asked, taking a slow sip of her coffee.

"Foreclosed and locked down. The liquidators are already cataloging their assets," Marcus replied. He paused, his tone shifting. "But we found something during the sweep of your uncle’s private servers. Something troubling."

Charlotte turned around, setting her cup on the mahogany desk. "Show me."

Marcus slid a tablet across the desk. It displayed a heavily encrypted ledger. "Richard and Julian weren’t acting entirely alone. They had financial backing. The two million they used to bribe the mechanic was a drop in the bucket. They received a massive injection of capital three days before your mother’s plane crashed. Half a billion dollars."

Charlotte’s green eyes narrowed, her mind processing the data at lightning speed. "From who?"

"A shell corporation routed through the Cayman Islands, traced back to a holding company in New York," Marcus said, his jaw tightening. "Vanguard Holdings."

Charlotte froze. Vanguard Holdings was the second-largest conglomerate in the country, a vicious rival to the Solmere Empire. And it was run by the youngest, most ruthless billionaire on Wall Street: Alexander Cross.

"Cross funded the coup," Charlotte whispered, the pieces falling into place. "He paid Richard to kill my mother so Solmere would destabilize, making it ripe for a hostile takeover."

"It seems so, boss," Marcus warned. "And if Alexander Cross is involved, this war is far from over."
