Chapter 15: The Trap Springs

The silence on the other end of the line was palpable.
"What are you talking about?" Alexander demanded, his smugness faltering for the first time.
Charlotte stepped up to the main console, gently pushing her lead cyber-engineer out of the way. "David, stop fighting the breach. Let them in."
"B-But boss," David stammered. "They’re taking everything!"
"Let them in," Charlotte repeated, her eyes locked on the screen.
David swallowed hard and hit the override key.
"You see, Alexander," Charlotte explained calmly, her voice ringing through the speaker. "When I purged my uncle’s servers three days ago, I found Julian Sterling’s little insurance policy. I found the backdoor codes. I could have deleted them. But I realized... they were the perfect bait."
In Alexander Cross’s office across the city, the billionaire stared at his own monitors. The money was flowing in rapidly. "You're bluffing. You’re losing."
"Am I?" Charlotte smirked. She typed a single string of commands into the Solmere mainframe.
Suddenly, the red flashing screens in Charlotte’s office turned a brilliant, solid green.
But in Vanguard’s headquarters, Alexander’s screens violently flashed red.
"Sir!" Vanguard’s lead technician screamed. "The money! It’s not Solmere’s money!"
"What?!" Alexander yelled, rushing to the monitor.
"The offshore accounts were a honeypot!" the technician panicked. "When we connected our servers to their backdoor, we didn't drain their accounts... we gave them direct access to ours! The connection is reversed!"
"Sever the connection!" Alexander roared, slamming his fists on the desk. "Shut down the mainframe! Cut the power!"
"I can't! We’re locked out!"
Through the phone, Charlotte’s cold, haunting laugh echoed in Alexander’s office. "You connected your primary holding servers directly to a federal trap, Alexander. You aren't stealing my money. You are currently wire-transferring Vanguard’s entire liquid assets directly into a locked FBI escrow account."
Alexander watched in absolute horror as the digital numbers on his screen rapidly dropped. Billions of dollars. His entire empire. Wiped out in seconds.
"You set me up," Alexander breathed, his face completely pale. "You used Julian’s codes to lure me in."
"I knew you were too greedy to resist," Charlotte said, leaning against her desk. "And thank you, Vanessa, for being the perfect, desperate little delivery girl. I knew if I left you with nothing, you’d scurry right to Cross with those codes."
Vanessa, who had been gloating seconds before, stared in horror at the red screens in Vanguard’s office. "No... no, no, no..."
"Vanguard Holdings is officially insolvent, Alexander," Charlotte announced, delivering the final, fatal blow. "And attempting to hack a billion-dollar conglomerate carries a mandatory minimum sentence of twenty years. I believe Agent Reynolds is pulling up to your lobby right now."
Down below Vanguard headquarters, the wail of police sirens began to rise, loud and piercing.
"You... you monster," Alexander hissed, realizing his entire life was over.
"No," Charlotte corrected softly. "I am Charlotte Vale. And this is my city."
She hung up the phone.
The penthouse office erupted into cheers. David and the tech team were hugging, and even the stoic Marcus cracked a wide, genuine smile.

Charlotte turned back to the window, looking out over the city skyline. The sun was shining brightly over the skyscrapers. Vanguard was dead. The Sterlings were eradicated. The board was clean.
Her mother’s empire was finally safe. And the world now knew one indisputable truth: you do not cross the Queen of the Solmere Empire and live to tell the tale.
