Chapter 6: The Spider’s Web

The penthouse office was utterly silent, save for the faint hum of the city far below. Charlotte Vale stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the glittering skyline that her mother had helped build. The sun was beginning to set, casting long, bloody shadows across the skyscrapers.
"The Sterling family," Charlotte murmured, tasting the venom of the name on her tongue. "Tell me everything, Marcus."
Marcus Thorne, standing at parade rest by the shattered boardroom doors, tapped his tablet. "Julian Sterling is the patriarch. He runs Sterling Global, a massive logistics and real estate firm. His daughter, Vanessa, is… well, you met her in the lobby. She’s the face of their brand, a socialite who spends her days shopping and throwing lavish parties to project an image of infinite wealth."
Special Agent Reynolds stepped forward, sliding a glossy folder onto the mahogany table. "Our forensic accountants just finished tracing the offshore routes. Richard Vale was the one who physically hired the assassin, yes. But he didn’t have the liquid capital to pay the two-million-dollar bribe to the aviation mechanic without raising red flags in your company’s audit."
"So he went to Julian Sterling," Charlotte deduced, her eyes narrowing.
"Exactly," Reynolds nodded. "Sterling wired the funds through three different shell companies in the Caymans. On paper, it looked like a standard real estate acquisition. In reality, it was the blood money that bought your mother’s death."
Charlotte’s fists clenched so tightly her nails bit into her palms. The pain grounded her. Her mother had mentored Julian Sterling. Eleanor Vale had loaned Julian his first million dollars to start his business when every bank in the city had turned him down. And this was how he repaid her? By funding her assassination so he could carve up her empire with her traitorous brother?
"Agent Reynolds," Charlotte said, turning away from the window, her voice dangerously calm. "Do you have enough evidence to arrest Julian Sterling right now?"
"We have the wire transfers, Miss Vale. We could have him in handcuffs before midnight," Reynolds assured her.
"No," Charlotte said flatly.
Marcus raised an eyebrow. "Boss?"
"If you arrest him now, his high-priced lawyers will claim he didn't know what the money was for. They’ll say Richard defrauded him. Julian might get a slap on the wrist, or tie it up in court for a decade while he hides his assets," Charlotte paced around the enormous desk, her mind operating with cold, terrifying precision. "I don’t just want Julian Sterling in a cell. I want his entire legacy burned to the ash. I want them to feel exactly what I felt when I was running for my life in the rain."
Charlotte picked up the pristine landline phone on her desk and pressed the button for the executive assistant pool, which had just been hastily re-staffed by Marcus’s trusted personnel.
"Yes, Miss Vale?" a crisp voice answered.
"Draft a press release," Charlotte commanded. "Announce that the Solmere Empire has successfully restructured its board of directors. Do not mention Richard’s arrest to the press yet. Keep the police records sealed. And send an exclusive, platinum-tier invitation to Julian and Vanessa Sterling. Solmere is hosting a grand gala this Friday night to celebrate our new corporate direction."

Marcus grinned, a predatory smile crossing his scarred face. "You’re going to invite the people who murdered your mother to a party?"
"I’m going to invite them to a slaughter," Charlotte corrected, her green eyes flashing with absolute lethal intent. "Marcus, I want our hackers to start quietly buying up Sterling Global’s debt. By Friday night, I want to own the air they breathe. They think they are untouchable predators. It’s time they learned what a real apex predator looks like."
