Chapter 2: The Override

For a second, the lobby was dead silent. Then, Vanessa let out a shrill, mocking laugh.
"Did you hear her? The little rat is making threats!" Vanessa stepped closer, pointing a manicured finger directly at Charlotte’s face. "You have no idea who you're talking to, you psycho. I am Vanessa Sterling. And you are nothing."
"Grab her!" Caldwell barked at the hesitating guards, his face flushing red with embarrassment. "Now! Stop standing around!"
The lead guard, a hulking man named Miller, grabbed Charlotte’s shoulder.
In a flash, Charlotte’s hand shot up. She didn't strike him. Instead, she grabbed his wrist with a grip so terrifyingly firm that Miller actually flinched. She looked past him, locking her piercing green eyes—the exact shade of her late mother’s eyes—directly onto Caldwell.
"Caldwell," Charlotte said, her voice steady and echoing with power. "Employee ID: 0042. Promoted to General Manager three years ago by Eleanor Vale."
Caldwell froze. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. How did this street beggar know his ID number? How did she know who promoted him?
Charlotte reached into the inner pocket of her torn, dirty jacket. The guards tensed, thinking she was reaching for a weapon. Instead, she pulled out a sleek, matte-black rectangular card. It bore no logo, no name. Only a single, embossed gold crest: a phoenix rising from a crown. The Solmere Crest.
It was the Master Key. Only two existed in the world. One was buried with her mother. The other belonged to the heir.
Charlotte walked over to the nearest marble pillar, where a discreet, high-tech security scanner was embedded into the stone. It was a terminal meant only for executive overrides.
"What is she doing?" Vanessa demanded, looking around in confusion. "Stop her!"
Charlotte swiped the black card through the scanner.
Instantly, a mechanical chime echoed through the massive lobby. The soft classical music cut off abruptly. The ambient golden lighting shifted to a stark, brilliant white. The massive glass doors at the front of the hotel slid shut with a heavy thud, and the electronic locks engaged automatically.
A synthesized, automated voice echoed from the hidden speakers above:
"Protocol Alpha recognized. Welcome back, Miss Vale. Lockdown initiated. All executive elevators secured."
The collective gasp from the crowd was deafening. The wealthy guests stumbled backward.
Caldwell’s face drained of all color. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost. His eyes locked onto the black card in Charlotte’s bruised hand, then traveled up to her face. Stripped of the dirt, the oversized coat, and the lowered head, the resemblance was undeniable. The sharp jawline. The piercing green eyes.
"M-Miss Vale?" Caldwell stammered, his knees physically buckling. "Charlotte Vale? But... you're dead. The board said you were..."
"The board said a lot of things, Caldwell," Charlotte said, her tone dripping with ice. She pulled out a pristine white handkerchief from Caldwell’s own breast pocket, wiped the blood from her lip, and dropped the soiled cloth onto Vanessa’s expensive white shoes.
Vanessa was hyperventilating, her eyes darting frantically around the locked room. "This is a trick! She’s an imposter! Arrest her!"
Charlotte slowly turned her gaze to Vanessa. The socialite took an involuntary step back, suddenly realizing how tall, how imposing the woman in the dirty tank top truly was.
"Vanessa Sterling," Charlotte said softly. "Your father's company leases three commercial properties from the Solmere Group. Is that correct?"
"I... I..." Vanessa stuttered, all her previous bravado evaporating into thin air.
"As of this exact second, those leases are terminated," Charlotte announced, her voice ringing clear across the lobby. "You have twenty-four hours to vacate my properties. Now, back away from me before I buy your father's bank and foreclose on your house, too."
Vanessa burst into tears, covering her mouth as she scrambled backward, tripping over her own silk gown.
Charlotte didn't give her a second look. She turned to the lead security guard, who was now standing at rigid attention, pale and sweating.
"Miller," Charlotte commanded.

"Y-Yes, Miss Vale!" the guard shouted.
"Caldwell is fired. Detain him. If he tries to leave this lobby, break his legs."
