Chapter 1: The Marble Floor

The cold, polished marble of the Solmere Hotel lobby offered no comfort as Charlotte Vale was violently yanked across it.
"Get up, you absolute trash!" shrieked Vanessa Sterling, a socialite whose family wealth was built entirely on the coattails of the Solmere Empire. Vanessa was dressed in a custom white silk gown that costs more than a luxury car, her face twisted in a mask of pure, unadulterated disgust. She tightened her grip on the collar of Charlotte’s faded, oversized jacket, hauling her forward.
Charlotte’s knees scraped against the pristine stone. A sharp, stinging pain radiated up her legs, but she didn’t cry out. She tasted the metallic tang of blood pooling in the corner of her mouth where Vanessa’s diamond-encrusted ring had struck her moments before.
"People like you don't belong in a place like this!" Vanessa’s voice echoed off the high, vaulted ceilings, drowning out the soft classical music drifting from the grand piano in the corner. "Look at you! You’re dripping dirt all over my shoes!"
A crowd had formed, a sea of bespoke suits, designer dresses, and horrified whispers. Yet, not a single person stepped forward. To the elite guests of the Solmere, this was mere entertainment—a momentary disruption in their perfectly curated lives. They saw only a homeless girl, a trespasser who had somehow slipped past the velvet ropes.
They didn't see Charlotte Vale.
Charlotte kept her head down, her dark hair falling over her eyes to shadow her bruised cheek. She let Vanessa drag her, her mind racing. Let them look, she thought, breathing through the pain. Let them think they have won.
For the past three months, ever since her mother’s private jet went down over the Atlantic, Charlotte had been a ghost. The world was told that the young heir to the Solmere Empire had died of grief, locked away in a Swiss sanatorium. In reality, she had been running for her life. She had uncovered the falsified flight logs. She knew her mother’s death was no accident. And she knew exactly who had orchestrated it: the Solmere Board of Directors, the very people her mother had trusted.
"Security! Where the hell is security?" Vanessa screeched, finally releasing Charlotte to impatiently snap her manicured fingers. "I want this rodent thrown out onto the street. Better yet, call the police!"
Heavy footsteps echoed across the lobby. Mr. Caldwell, the hotel’s General Manager, pushed his way through the crowd. His sharp eyes darted from Vanessa’s furious face to the bruised woman on the floor. Caldwell was a man who worshipped wealth; he bowed to whoever signed his checks. And lately, those checks were being signed by the corrupt board.
"Miss Sterling! I am so incredibly sorry," Caldwell gasped, pulling out a silk handkerchief to dab his sweating forehead. "I have no idea how this… this vagrant made it past the front doors."
"She bumped into me, Caldwell! She ruined my hemline!" Vanessa gestured wildly to a microscopic smudge on her pristine white gown. "If she isn't in handcuffs in the next five minutes, I am pulling my family’s annual gala from your pathetic venue!"
"Right away, Miss Sterling," Caldwell sneered, turning his venomous gaze toward Charlotte. He signaled for the three burly security guards standing nearby. "You heard her. Grab this trash. Drag her out through the service elevator and call the precinct. Make sure she spends the night in a cell."
The guards lunged forward, their massive hands reaching for Charlotte’s arms.
But before they could touch her, Charlotte placed her raw, scraped hands flat against the marble floor and slowly pushed herself up. The air in the lobby seemed to shift. The temperature dropped.

When she finally lifted her head, the look in her eyes wasn't fear. It was absolute, lethal authority.
"Touch me," Charlotte whispered, her voice barely carrying, yet cutting through the silence like a scalpel, "and you will spend the rest of your lives begging for a job scrubbing toilets."
