Chapter 6: The Broken Altar

The dawn light over San Pedro Garza García broke through the high windows of Room 412, casting long, fractured shadows across the tiled floor. For hours, neither Sebastián nor Valeria spoke. The baby slept peacefully in the mobile bassinet beside the bed, completely unaware of the seismic war being waged around him.

Sebastián sat in a stiff vinyl chair, his phone clutched so tightly in his hand that his knuckles were stark white. The screen glowed relentlessly with missed calls—twenty-two from the board of directors, forty-six from general corporate counsel, and a string of frantic text messages from executive vice presidents demanding to know why the quarterly restructuring documents had not been signed.

He didn't answer a single one.

The man who had spent a lifetime chasing the approval of the Alcázar board finally understood the bitter truth: the empire was never a sanctuary. It was a gilded cage designed to consume anyone who didn't bow to Doña Rebeca’s absolute control.

“Sebastián,” Valeria’s voice broke the heavy silence. She was propped up against the pillows, her face pale, her eyes haunted. “They won’t stop. Taking the baby back tonight... that was just a tactical retreat for your mother. She never loses.”

Sebastián stood up, walking over to the window to look out at the manicured lawns of the private hospital. His reflection stared back at him—exhausted, stubbled, eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep.

“Let her try,” Sebastián said, his voice hard as tempered steel. “She thinks I’m still the boy who needs her permission to breathe. She forgot that my father left me fifty-one percent voting shares of the secondary logistics holdings—shares she tried to absorb last year under a false trust.”

Valeria’s breath hitched. “The logistics holdings? But your cousin Octavio manages those accounts.”

“Not anymore,” Sebastián replied, turning sharply to face her. “Octavio is an attorney, but he’s also an accomplice to corporate fraud and medical intimidation. If he tries to enforce any of those fake custody papers today, I’ll hand the federal prosecutor every wire transfer he’s funneled through the Cayman accounts since twenty-twenty.”

Before Valeria could respond, the heavy wooden door of the room swung open without a knock.

It wasn't Rebeca. It was Dr. Mendoza, the hospital's chief of obstetrics, accompanied by two armed private security guards wearing the dark suits of the Alcázar estate.

Dr. Mendoza looked deeply uncomfortable, shifting his weight from foot to foot as he avoided meeting Sebastián’s piercing gaze.

“Mr. Alcázar,” Dr. Mendoza began, clearing his throat nervously. “I’m sorry, but we’ve received an emergency administrative order from the state health board. Due to... complications regarding Mrs. Valeria’s medical file and the disputed guardianship papers... we are required to transfer both patients immediately.”

Sebastián didn't blink. He stepped directly between the doctor and the bassinet where his son was sleeping.

“You’ll step out of this room right now, Doctor, or I’ll have you booked as an accessory to kidnapping before the nurse finishes changing shifts,” Sebastián said softly, the quiet menace in his tone freezing the doctor in his tracks.
