Chapter 19: The Father’s Final Words

Sebastián took the envelope from Don Ernesto’s hands. The paper was thick, aged slightly at the edges, bearing his father’s private personal crest.

“Thank you, Ernesto,” Sebastián said quietly. “You can tell the federal prosecutors that your cooperation in the financial audits will be noted in your final statement.”

Don Ernesto nodded gratefully, climbed back into his truck, and slowly turned around, driving back down the mountain road until the dust settled and the silence of the sierra returned.

Sebastián walked back toward the hacienda, holding the envelope as if it weighed a thousand pounds.

Valeria was waiting on the porch, holding their son, who had just fallen asleep in her arms. She saw the tense expression on Sebastián’s face and immediately sensed the weight of the moment.

“What is it?” she asked softly as he climbed the wooden steps and sat down beside her.

“It’s a letter from my father,” Sebastián murmured, his thumb tracing the sealed flap. “Found in his private safe. Written before he died.”

Valeria placed a gentle hand over his knee. “Open it, Sebastián. It’s time to hear what he really wanted you to know.”

Sebastián carefully slid his finger under the flap, tearing the envelope open. He pulled out a single sheet of heavy cream paper covered in his father’s familiar, sloping handwriting.

He began to read aloud, his voice thick with emotion:

“My dearest son, Sebastián,

If you are reading this, it means the worst has happened, and the cold ambition I allowed to fester in our household has finally consumed everything I built. For years, I watched your mother weave her web of control, isolating you, demanding perfection, and crushing anyone who didn't fit her mold. I was a coward. I buried myself in business and let her dictate our family’s soul.

If you have found the strength to break away, to protect your own wife and your own child from the poison of the Alcázar name, then you have proven yourself to be a far better man than I ever was.

Do not mourn the empire. True wealth is not measured in steel, stocks, or stone walls. It is measured in the person you hold in your arms when the night is quiet.

Forgive me, my son. And build something real.

With all my love,
Eduardo Alcázar”

A single tear spilled over Sebastián’s eyelashes, tracking down his cheek before he buried his face in his hands, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of profound release. The last anchor tying him to the ghosts of his past finally snapped, freeing his soul completely.

Valeria leaned over, resting her head gently against his shoulder, wrapping her free arm around his waist.
