Chapter 13: Sanctuary

Three days after the raid on the estate, the private room at the San Pedro hospital was finally quiet. The harsh fluorescent lights had been dimmed, and soft afternoon sunlight poured through the large bay windows, warming the hardwood floor.

Valeria sat propped up in bed, looking infinitely stronger than she had on the night of the birth. The deep purple bruises on her legs were beginning to fade into a dull yellow, but the emotional scars would take a lifetime to heal.

The door opened quietly, and Sebastián stepped inside. He was dressed casually in a plain black t-shirt and jeans, carrying a small leather bag in one hand and a discharge clearance form in the other.

He walked straight to the bassinet in the corner, gently lifting his sleeping son into his arms with a practiced, tender ease that still amazed Valeria every time she saw it. He walked over and sat on the edge of the mattress, carefully settling the baby into Valeria’s waiting arms.

Valeria looked down at her son, her eyes shining with unshed tears. She kissed the top of his soft head before looking up at her husband.

“The lawyers called,” Valeria whispered, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time in months. “The emergency guardianship orders have been formally dissolved by the federal judge. We have full, uncontested custody.”

Sebastián wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side. He pressed a soft kiss to her temple.

“It’s over, my love,” Sebastián murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “Rebeca is being held without bail in the federal detention center pending trial. Octavio is cooperating with the prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence. Nobody will ever hurt you or our son again. I swear it on my life.”

Valeria leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart. The terrifying fortress of the Alcázar dynasty was gone, replaced by something far more powerful: the truth, and a family rebuilt from the ashes.

“Where do we go from here?” Valeria asked softly, looking out at the glittering skyline of San Pedro.

Sebastián smiled, tightening his embrace. “Far away from this city. We’re packing up the ranch in Chihuahua, turning off our phones, and starting over. Just the three of us.”
