Chapter 17: Healing in the Shadows

The first few weeks at the Chihuahua ranch passed in a peaceful, rhythmic blur of sleepless nights, quiet mornings, and the gentle hum of nature.
Valeria spent her days sitting on the wide wooden porch, rocking their son in a hand-carved cedar chair while watching the golden sunlight shift across the canyon walls. Slowly, the physical trauma began to heal. The dark purple bruises on her legs faded completely, replaced by the natural warmth of her skin.
More importantly, the invisible chains of psychological fear that Doña Rebeca had forged around her mind began to dissolve.
Sebastián had completely transformed. The ruthless, work-obsessed corporate executive who lived inside high-rise boardrooms vanished in the high-altitude air. He wore worn denim jeans and plaid shirts, spent his mornings chopping firewood, and spent his afternoons sitting on the porch with Valeria, helping feed their son and relearning how to simply live.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the jagged horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of violet and orange, Sebastián sat beside Valeria on the porch swing.
“The federal prosecutor’s office called via satellite phone today,” Sebastián said quietly, resting his arm along the back of the bench.
Valeria turned to look at him, her body tensing instinctively. “What did they say about Rebeca’s trial?”
“The trial date has been officially set for late autumn,” Sebastián replied, his voice steady and calm. “Octavio’s testimony completely dismantled her defense. The financial forensic audits proved every single wire transfer, every forged signature, and the digital evidence regarding my father’s medical records. She won’t just be convicted, Valeria. She’s facing multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole.”
Valeria let out a long, slow breath. The news didn't bring joy or triumph; it brought closure. The monster who had tried to steal her child and break her spirit was finally locked away where she could never reach them again.

“We’re safe, aren't we?” Valeria asked, leaning her head softly against Sebastián’s shoulder.
“Forever,” Sebastián promised, pressing a soft kiss into her hair.
