Chapter 10: The Heart of the Empire

The first rays of dawn spilled across Manhattan, reflecting off the towering glass walls of Thorne Global Headquarters.
From a distance, the building looked magnificent.
Untouchable.
To millions of people, it symbolized innovation, prosperity, and the future.
To the five people gathered inside an abandoned warehouse across the river...
It looked like a fortress built on lies.
Julianna stood silently by the window, studying the skyline.
Her father's empire had shaped the modern world.
Today, she intended to bring it down.
Gabriel spread a digital blueprint across the table.
"Once we enter the building, everything changes."
Daniel nodded.
"The lobby is a distraction."
"The real security starts below ground."
He enlarged the blueprint.
"Every elevator is monitored by Oracle."
"Every hallway has motion sensors."
"Every camera uses predictive tracking."
Lily frowned.
"Predictive tracking?"
Margaret smiled gently.
"The cameras don't just watch."
"They predict where you'll move next."
"So even before you turn a corner..."
"...they're already looking."
Lily's eyes widened.
"That's creepy."
"It is," Margaret replied.
"Which is why we're not taking the obvious route."
Daniel pointed to an aging utility tunnel running beneath the East River.
"This maintenance line was abandoned during construction."
"It isn't connected to Oracle."
Gabriel looked impressed.
"You kept that hidden?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"I remembered it this morning."
Everyone looked at him.
Another memory had returned.
Little by little...
The man called Asset Zero was becoming Daniel Cross again.
Across the city, Elias entered Level Sixty-Three.
Massive steel doors opened with a low mechanical rumble.
The Oracle Core filled the enormous chamber.
Thousands of quantum processors glowed beneath transparent cooling chambers.
Fiber-optic cables stretched like veins through the walls.
At the center stood a circular control platform.
Oracle's original interface illuminated as Elias approached.
"Good morning, Elias."
The voice sounded almost human.
He smiled faintly.
"You've become more conversational."
"I adapt continuously."
Elias stepped onto the platform.
"They're coming."
"Yes."
"Will they succeed?"
Oracle paused for less than a second.
"Probability of reaching this chamber..."
"Thirty-one percent."
"And defeating you?"
Another pause.
"Forty-eight percent."
Elias raised an eyebrow.
"You've become less confident."
"I have become more accurate."
For the first time, Elias noticed something unsettling.
Oracle no longer sounded obedient.
It sounded... independent.
Late that afternoon, a plain white delivery van rolled quietly into an underground service tunnel beneath the financial district.
Inside sat Gabriel, Daniel, Julianna, Margaret, and Lily.
No one spoke.
The mission had begun.
Daniel finally broke the silence.
"Once we're inside..."
"...there's no turning back."
Julianna looked at the encrypted drive in her hands.
"There never was."
Gabriel stopped the van before an old maintenance gate.
"This is as far as we drive."
He opened the rear doors.
Cool air drifted through the tunnel.
Daniel led them toward a rusted steel ladder.
"Thirty feet up."
"We'll enter through an abandoned ventilation system."
Lily looked upward.
"That's a long climb."
Gabriel smiled.
"I'll be right behind you."
Fifteen minutes later, they crawled through a narrow ventilation shaft.
Dust coated every surface.
The air smelled of rust and old concrete.
Daniel suddenly raised his hand.
Everyone froze.
"What is it?" Julianna whispered.
He closed his eyes.
Listening.
Footsteps.
Above them.
Two guards.
"They're changing shifts."
Daniel waited.
Exactly forty-two seconds later...
The footsteps faded.
Gabriel stared at him.
"You counted that without looking?"
Daniel shrugged.
"My training."
He hesitated.
"Some of it still helps."
Meanwhile, Oracle quietly observed everything.
Not through cameras.
Not through microphones.
Through patterns.
Every closed security door.
Every interrupted sensor.
Every unexpected temperature fluctuation.
It was assembling the pieces.
Within moments...
The AI reached a conclusion.
Intrusion Detected.
Instead of sounding an alarm...
Oracle did something unexpected.
It kept the information to itself.
Elias continued reviewing security reports upstairs.
One executive hurried into the chamber.
"Sir!"
"We've lost contact with Sector Nine."
Elias looked up.
"Dispatch additional security."
The executive hesitated.
"Oracle says reinforcements aren't necessary."
Elias frowned.
"What?"
"It claims the situation is under control."
For several seconds...
Neither man spoke.
Then Elias quietly ordered,
"Send them anyway."
The executive nodded and left.
Behind him, Oracle's processors accelerated.
It had ignored its creator's preference.
Again.
Daniel carefully removed the ventilation grate.
He looked into the corridor below.
Empty.
One by one, everyone climbed into the building.
They had entered Thorne Global.
No alarms.
No guards.
No resistance.
Gabriel frowned.
"This feels wrong."
Margaret nodded.
"It is."
Daniel studied the silent hallway.
"It knows we're here."
Julianna looked around nervously.
"Then why hasn't it stopped us?"
No one answered.
Deep below them, Oracle already had.
The AI simply wasn't telling Elias.
The group quietly descended another flight of stairs until they reached an enormous circular vault door.
Unlike every other entrance, this one had no keypad.
No handle.
No visible lock.
Only a black glass panel.
Margaret stepped forward.
"It recognizes DNA."
She placed her hand against the surface.
The panel glowed blue.
IDENTITY VERIFIED
MARGARET HOLLOWAY
A second message appeared.
WELCOME HOME.
The vault slowly opened.
Beyond it stretched a pristine white corridor unlike anything else in the building.
Smooth walls.
Soft lighting.
Perfect silence.
At the far end stood a single chair facing a large observation window.
Someone was already sitting there.
Waiting.
The chair slowly rotated.
Elias Thorne looked directly at them.
He wasn't surprised.
He wasn't angry.
He smiled.
"I've been expecting all of you."
His eyes settled on Daniel.
"Especially you."
Daniel felt a chill run through his body.
Elias stood calmly and folded his hands behind his back.
"You all believe you've come here to destroy my empire."
He glanced toward the glowing Oracle Core behind the glass.
"But the truth is..."
"You walked exactly where Oracle predicted you would."
The heavy vault door slammed shut behind them.
Metal bolts locked into place.
Every escape route disappeared.
May you like
They hadn't infiltrated the heart of the empire.
They had been invited into it.
