Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Shadows

The maintenance tunnel stretched beneath the penthouse like a forgotten artery, untouched for years.

Julianna held Lily's hand as tightly as she could, ignoring the throbbing pain in her shoulder and the blood soaking through her sleeve. Every step echoed through the narrow concrete passage.

Behind them, faint shouts drifted through the walls.

"They're searching every floor," Julianna whispered.

"We have to keep moving."

Lily nodded, trying to stay brave.

"Are they going to find us?"

Julianna looked into her daughter's frightened eyes.

"Not if I can help it."

She wished she believed her own words.

Forty floors above, Elias Thorne stood in the ruined penthouse, surrounded by shattered glass and overturned furniture.

The secret passage was empty.

His daughter was gone.

One executive nervously approached.

"Sir... the city police are asking if they should respond."

Elias didn't answer immediately.

He stared at the open panel hidden behind the painting.

Memories surfaced against his will.

Julianna at six years old, laughing as she discovered the hidden corridor.

"Again, Daddy!"

She had loved pretending the penthouse was a castle filled with secret passages.

Back then, Elias had promised her no danger could ever reach her inside these walls.

Now those same walls had become her escape.

The memory vanished as quickly as it came.

"Cancel the police."

The executive blinked.

"Sir?"

"This remains an internal corporate matter."

"But witnesses heard gunshots."

"I'll handle the witnesses."

His voice carried the same cold certainty that had built one of the largest corporations on Earth.

Yet beneath that confidence, something else was growing.

Fear.

Not fear of losing his daughter.

Fear of losing control.

Twenty miles away, deep beneath an abandoned industrial complex officially listed as condemned, reinforced blast doors slid open.

A man stepped into the light.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

His black tactical suit carried no insignia.

No rank.

No name.

His face was calm, almost expressionless, except for a faint scar running from his right ear to his jaw.

A digital screen illuminated.

MISSION UPDATE

Target: Julianna Thorne

Secondary Target: Lily Thorne

Priority: Recover encrypted data drive

The man read the instructions without emotion.

Then one additional line appeared.

Failure Probability: 0.3%

He picked up a suppressed pistol.

A combat knife.

A small encrypted communicator.

Nothing more.

People once called him many things.

Operative.

Ghost.

Executioner.

For the past decade...

Oracle simply called him Asset Zero.

Meanwhile, Julianna finally reached the end of the maintenance tunnel.

She pushed open a rusted steel hatch.

Cool night air rushed over them.

They emerged into an abandoned subway service station beneath Midtown Manhattan.

The station had been closed for decades.

Broken lights hung from the ceiling.

Old tracks disappeared into darkness.

No trains had passed through here in years.

Lily looked around nervously.

"Where are we?"

"A place no one remembers."

Julianna checked her watch.

Midnight.

She pulled the encrypted drive from her jacket.

Despite everything, it remained intact.

"This little piece of metal," she murmured, "can destroy an empire."

But only if she survived long enough to expose it.

She reached into another pocket and removed an old prepaid phone.

It had no saved contacts.

Only one number.

She hesitated.

She hadn't spoken to him in almost fifteen years.

After the divorce...

After her mother's mysterious death...

After she left Thorne Global...

He had disappeared from her life.

Yet if anyone could help now...

It was him.

She pressed CALL.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally...

A familiar voice answered.

"I was wondering when you'd call."

Julianna froze.

"You knew?"

"I knew this day would eventually come."

The man's voice remained calm.

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you over the phone."

"Smart."

A brief pause followed.

Then he spoke four words that made her blood run cold.

"Oracle is listening."

The line immediately disconnected.

Julianna stared at the silent phone.

Someone had cut the connection.

Not him.

Oracle.

It was already monitoring every signal she attempted to send.

Several blocks away, traffic moved normally through the midnight streets.

People laughed outside restaurants.

Taxi horns echoed between skyscrapers.

No one realized an invisible war had begun beneath the city.

Inside a black SUV parked across the street, Asset Zero lowered a tablet.

Oracle had triangulated the brief phone signal.

A blue dot flashed on the digital map.

Target Located.

Distance...

Nine hundred feet.

He quietly started the engine.

His expression never changed.

For him, this wasn't personal.

It was simply another mission.

Another assignment.

Another family to erase.

Julianna suddenly heard the unmistakable sound of tires screeching above the abandoned station.

Her instincts screamed.

Someone had found them.

She grabbed Lily's hand.

"Run."

"But—"

"Now!"

They sprinted down the dark platform just as powerful headlights flooded the tunnel entrance.

A black SUV stopped outside.

Its driver's door slowly opened.

One man stepped into the shadows.

He wasn't rushing.

He wasn't searching.

He already knew exactly where they were.

Asset Zero looked into the darkness of the abandoned station.

Then he spoke quietly into his communicator.

"Visual confirmation."

A chilling mechanical voice answered through his earpiece.

"Proceed."

He drew his suppressed pistol.

May you like

For the first time in years...

The hunt had begun.
