Chapter 6: The Woman Who Refused to Die

Julianna couldn't speak.
She stared at the silver-haired woman standing beneath the glow of the underground command center, trying to reconcile reality with everything she had believed for the past eighteen years.
"Margaret Holloway..." she whispered.
"That's impossible."
Margaret offered a faint smile.
"Impossible is a word your father has spent a lifetime trying to eliminate."
She stepped forward with calm confidence.
"I've been dead only on paper."
Lily looked up at her mother.
"Mom... who is she?"
Julianna swallowed.
"The woman who built the brain behind Project Oracle."
Margaret gently shook her head.
"I built the foundation."
"What Elias turned it into... that was never my intention."
The command center was unlike anything Julianna had ever seen.
Rows of secure servers hummed behind reinforced glass.
Large digital maps displayed encrypted communication networks stretching across continents.
Photographs covered an entire wall.
Politicians.
Corporate executives.
Military contractors.
Judges.
Media personalities.
Every photograph was connected by red strings and handwritten notes.
It wasn't just a conspiracy board.
It was a map of influence.
A map of Elias Thorne's empire.
Margaret noticed Julianna studying it.
"Your father doesn't own governments."
"He owns the people who influence them."
Back at Thorne Global Headquarters, Elias stood alone in his private office.
The city skyline no longer comforted him.
For the first time in decades, events were unfolding beyond his control.
His chief technology officer entered carefully.
"Sir..."
"What now?"
"We've lost contact with Asset Zero."
Elias turned sharply.
"What do you mean, lost?"
"No signal."
"No biometric updates."
"No location."
Oracle can't track him."
Elias frowned.
"Oracle tracks everything."
The executive hesitated.
"Apparently... not inside Gabriel Cross's network."
Elias walked toward the massive window.
"So Gabriel prepared for this."
He wasn't surprised.
Gabriel had always planned three moves ahead.
That was exactly why Elias had once trusted him.
Until Gabriel discovered the truth about Oracle.
Miles away, inside the abandoned subway station, dust slowly settled.
Asset Zero emerged from the darkness.
His tactical suit was torn at the shoulder.
A thin line of blood ran down his neck.
Nothing serious.
He activated a handheld scanner.
"No signal."
The hidden passage had vanished from Oracle's maps.
Gabriel had done more than build secret tunnels.
He had created blind spots.
Places where Oracle couldn't see.
For the first time in years...
The world's most powerful AI had gone blind.
Asset Zero spoke quietly into his communicator.
"Mission update."
Only static answered.
He lowered the device.
Completely isolated.
He was on his own.
Inside the underground command center, Margaret placed the encrypted data drive onto a circular glass table.
"It survived."
Julianna nodded.
"Barely."
Margaret connected the drive to a secure offline computer.
Multiple authentication screens appeared.
One by one, they unlocked.
Thousands of classified files filled the monitor.
Financial records.
Private communications.
Government contracts.
Psychological research.
Human behavior experiments.
Lily stared at the screen.
"So many files..."
Margaret's expression darkened.
"This isn't even half of them."
Julianna looked closer.
One folder caught her attention.
PROJECT GENESIS
"I've never seen this before."
"You weren't supposed to."
Margaret clicked it open.
Several photographs appeared.
Children.
Dozens of them.
Different ages.
Different countries.
Each photograph carried a serial number instead of a name.
Julianna felt her stomach tighten.
"What is this?"
Margaret hesitated.
"The original purpose of Oracle."
"I thought Oracle predicted behavior."
"It does."
"But before it could predict adults..."
"It had to understand how human behavior is created."
Silence filled the room.
Julianna slowly realized what she was seeing.
"They experimented..."
"...on children."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"They called it behavioral optimization."
"I called it unforgivable."
The reinforced entrance suddenly opened.
Gabriel Cross walked inside.
His jacket carried fresh bullet holes.
A cut above his eyebrow trickled blood.
Lily immediately ran toward him.
"Are you okay?"
Gabriel smiled warmly.
"I've had worse Mondays."
Julianna sighed with relief.
"What happened?"
"He escaped."
"You let him go?"
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
"I couldn't stop him."
He removed a folded piece of paper from his pocket.
"But I did take this."
Margaret unfolded it.
Her face immediately changed.
"Where did you get this?"
"It fell from Asset Zero's equipment."
The paper contained a single photograph.
An old family picture.
A smiling woman.
A young boy.
And a much younger Gabriel Cross standing beside them.
Julianna looked confused.
"Who are they?"
Gabriel remained silent.
Margaret answered softly.
"His family."
Gabriel lowered his eyes.
"They died twenty years ago."
Julianna studied the picture again.
Then she noticed something written on the back.
Subject Zero
She looked up slowly.
"What does that mean?"
Gabriel took a long breath.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"It means Asset Zero..."
He paused.
"...wasn't just my student."
The room fell silent.
"He was my son."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Even Lily froze.
Julianna stared at Gabriel in disbelief.
"You mean..."
Gabriel nodded painfully.
"My son disappeared when he was fourteen."
"I searched for years."
"I buried an empty coffin."
His hands trembled as he held the old photograph.
"But Elias never told me the truth."
Margaret's eyes filled with sorrow.
"He didn't disappear."
"He was taken."
She looked directly at Gabriel.
"Project Genesis didn't just study children."
"It selected them."
Another painful silence settled over the room.
Gabriel finally whispered the words he had feared for two decades.
"My son..."
"...became Asset Zero."
And somewhere above them, hidden in the darkness of Manhattan, Asset Zero stood alone on a rooftop overlooking the city.
He removed the damaged photograph from his pocket.
For reasons he couldn't explain...
He hadn't destroyed it.
He looked at the smiling man in the picture.
A face that stirred fragments of memories buried deep within him.
Then, for the very first time since Oracle had claimed him...
May you like
He quietly asked himself one question.
Who was I before they turned me into a weapon?
