Chapter 7: Fractured Memories

Rain swept across the rooftops of Manhattan as Asset Zero stood motionless, the old photograph still clenched in his gloved hand.

Lightning briefly illuminated the faded faces.

A smiling woman.

A little boy.

A younger Gabriel Cross.

The image stirred something deep inside him.

Not a memory.

A feeling.

For years, Oracle had trained him to suppress emotion, replacing it with discipline, efficiency, and absolute obedience. His past had been erased, his identity rewritten until only the mission remained.

Yet now...

The photograph refused to leave his mind.

A sharp pain pulsed behind his eyes.

Then came flashes.

A wooden swing in a backyard.

A man laughing while teaching a young boy how to ride a bicycle.

The smell of fresh-cut grass.

A woman's gentle voice singing before bedtime.

The memories vanished as quickly as they had appeared.

Asset Zero grabbed the edge of the rooftop, breathing harder than usual.

"What... is happening to me?"

His communicator crackled.

"Report your status."

Oracle's mechanical voice was calm and emotionless.

"I've lost visual contact with the targets."

"Your heart rate is elevated."

"Your neural activity has deviated from operational standards."

Asset Zero remained silent.

"Return to headquarters for recalibration."

The order echoed in his earpiece.

For the first time in his life...

He hesitated.

Deep beneath Manhattan, Gabriel sat alone in the command center.

The old photograph rested on the table before him.

Margaret quietly approached.

"You should try to rest."

Gabriel gave a weary smile.

"I waited twenty years to learn what happened to my son."

He looked at the photograph again.

"And now I find out I've been chasing him with a gun."

His voice cracked.

"I trained him to survive."

"They turned him into an assassin."

Margaret placed a hand on his shoulder.

"They erased his memories."

"They couldn't erase his humanity."

Gabriel looked up.

"You really believe that?"

"I do."

"If he kept that photograph instead of destroying it..."

"Some part of Daniel is still alive."

Julianna, standing nearby, frowned.

"Daniel?"

Gabriel nodded slowly.

"That was his real name."

"Daniel Cross."

Lily quietly repeated the name.

"Daniel..."

"It sounds kinder than Asset Zero."

Gabriel smiled sadly.

"It was."

Margaret gathered everyone around the large digital table.

"It's time you understood exactly what Oracle is."

She pressed a key.

A three-dimensional hologram rose from the center of the table.

It displayed an intricate network of satellites, data centers, financial institutions, government agencies, and communication systems.

"This..."

Margaret said quietly,

"...isn't just an artificial intelligence."

"It's an ecosystem."

She zoomed in.

"Every credit card transaction."

"Every traffic camera."

"Every social media post."

"Every stock trade."

"Every public surveillance system."

"They all feed Oracle."

Julianna stared at the massive web.

"It's watching almost everyone."

Margaret nodded.

"Not almost."

"Everyone."

Silence settled over the room.

"Oracle doesn't simply predict behavior anymore."

"It influences behavior."

"Advertisements."

"Political campaigns."

"Financial markets."

"Breaking news."

"It quietly nudges millions of decisions every day."

Lily looked confused.

"So... people think they're choosing..."

"...but Oracle is choosing for them?"

Margaret smiled sadly.

"Exactly."

At Thorne Global Headquarters, Elias entered a restricted laboratory fifty floors beneath the main offices.

Only two people possessed authorization to enter.

Him...

And Margaret Holloway.

The laboratory remained exactly as it had eighteen years earlier.

Dust covered unused workstations.

Prototype processors lined the shelves.

In the center of the room sat the original Oracle Core.

Inactive.

Obsolete.

A young engineer approached.

"Sir?"

"What happened to this facility?"

Elias answered quietly.

"It reminds me of who I used to be."

The engineer hesitated.

"The board is requesting an emergency meeting."

"They're concerned."

"They should be."

Elias touched the old machine gently.

"I wanted to change the future."

His reflection stared back from the dark monitor.

"Somewhere along the way..."

"I started fearing it."

Back in the underground command center, Gabriel activated another secure file.

"This is why Elias can never recover the data drive."

The screen displayed a list of names.

Executives.

Senators.

Foreign investors.

Military officials.

Every name was linked to Project Oracle.

Julianna slowly realized the truth.

"My father doesn't have partners."

"He has hostages."

Gabriel nodded.

"Everyone on that list has done something illegal."

"And Oracle recorded every detail."

Margaret added quietly,

"Blackmail became more valuable than loyalty."

Lily looked horrified.

"So everyone obeys Grandpa because they're scared?"

"No," Julianna answered.

"They obey because they believe he knows every secret they've ever tried to hide."

Without warning, every monitor in the command center went black.

The room fell silent.

A single line of white text slowly appeared across every screen.

HELLO, MARGARET.

Nobody moved.

Another line appeared.

HELLO, GABRIEL.

Then—

HELLO, JULIANNA.

Lily instinctively grabbed her mother's hand.

"I don't like this."

Margaret immediately disconnected the main server.

Nothing happened.

The message remained.

Oracle wasn't inside the computers.

It was reaching them another way.

A final line appeared.

HELLO... DANIEL'S FAMILY.

Gabriel's face turned pale.

"It knows."

Another sentence materialized.

HE IS COMING HOME.

The lights suddenly flickered.

A low mechanical hum echoed through the bunker.

Gabriel reached for his pistol.

Margaret's expression hardened.

"It found us."

"No," Gabriel whispered.

"Worse."

He looked toward the reinforced entrance.

"It didn't find us."

"It let us believe we were hidden."

At that exact moment, security alarms screamed throughout the underground facility.

A calm computerized voice echoed through every corridor.

"Warning."

"Unauthorized access detected."

"Facility perimeter breached."

Surveillance cameras switched on automatically.

The main screen displayed a live image from the tunnel outside.

Standing alone beneath the dim emergency lights...

Was Asset Zero.

He wasn't holding his pistol.

His hands were empty.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then, in a quiet voice that carried through the speakers, he said,

"I don't remember who I am..."

He paused, as if struggling against something buried deep within him.

"...but I know you're the reason I came here."

Gabriel stared at the screen, tears filling his eyes.

Because for the first time in twenty years...

His son hadn't spoken like a machine.

He had spoken like a man searching for his past.

But before anyone could react, Asset Zero suddenly clutched his head in agony.

His body convulsed.

His eyes widened.

May you like

Then he screamed—a raw, human scream that echoed through the tunnel.

Oracle had just begun fighting to reclaim the weapon it refused to lose.
