Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The abandoned subway station erupted into silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The suffocating silence that came just before violence.
Julianna pulled Lily behind a crumbling concrete pillar as slow, measured footsteps echoed across the platform.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Asset Zero wasn't rushing.
He hunted with patience.
He knew panic made people careless.
"Mom..." Lily whispered, her voice trembling. "Is he a police officer?"
Julianna carefully peeked around the pillar.
The man wore black tactical clothing without a badge, logo, or identifying mark.
"No," she answered quietly.
"He's much worse."
Asset Zero stopped in the middle of the platform.
His sharp eyes scanned every corner.
Broken benches.
Rusted tracks.
Collapsed walls.
Fresh drops of blood.
He knelt and touched the concrete with two fingers.
Still warm.
"They're close," he said into his communicator.
Oracle responded instantly.
"They must not leave the station."
He stood without another word.
Unlike ordinary assassins, Asset Zero never acted out of hatred.
He felt no anger.
No excitement.
Only precision.
Every movement was calculated.
Every breath controlled.
Every shot intentional.
Julianna quickly searched the station with her eyes.
There had to be another exit.
Then she remembered.
Years ago, Thorne Global had secretly purchased abandoned subway infrastructure beneath Manhattan as part of a transportation research project.
She had helped review the acquisition.
According to the blueprints...
There was an emergency maintenance tunnel leading to an old utility corridor.
If it hadn't been sealed.
She squeezed Lily's hand.
"We're going to run."
"When I say don't look back..."
"...don't."
Lily nodded.
Hundreds of miles away, in a secluded lakeside cabin surrounded by towering pine trees, an old radio suddenly crackled to life.
The man sitting beside the fireplace looked up.
His name was Gabriel Cross.
Once, he had served as Chief Security Officer for Thorne Global.
Before that...
He had spent twenty-two years leading covert intelligence operations for the U.S. government.
He had trained some of the world's best protective agents.
Including one operative whose records no longer officially existed.
Asset Zero.
Gabriel listened to the encrypted transmission intercepted by equipment hidden beneath the cabin floor.
"...Target located..."
"...Authorization confirmed..."
"...Eliminate witnesses..."
His expression darkened.
"So..."
"It finally started."
He walked to a steel safe hidden behind a bookshelf.
Inside rested a worn leather folder.
Across the front were three words handwritten in black ink.
Project Oracle.
Gabriel opened it.
Photographs.
Engineering reports.
Financial records.
Death certificates.
Documents that had never reached investigators.
One photograph stopped him.
A younger Elias Thorne stood beside several software engineers during Oracle's earliest development.
Standing in the back row...
Smiling confidently...
Was Gabriel himself.
"I warned you," he whispered.
"You were never supposed to give the machine authority."
He closed the folder.
Opened another compartment.
Inside rested a compact handgun, spare magazines, and an old silver badge.
After fifteen years of hiding...
He was going back.
Back in Manhattan...
Asset Zero suddenly stopped walking.
He heard it.
Tiny footsteps.
Left side.
Behind the collapsed wall.
Without hesitation, he fired.
The suppressed pistol produced only a soft pop.
Concrete exploded.
Dust filled the air.
Lily screamed.
"Run!" Julianna shouted.
They sprinted toward the far end of the platform.
Asset Zero immediately pursued.
Not fast.
Steady.
Confident.
He knew there was nowhere to go.
The emergency tunnel ended only two hundred yards ahead.
Oracle had already provided the station's complete blueprint.
Or so it believed.
Julianna reached the rusted maintenance door.
She grabbed the handle.
It refused to move.
"No..."
She pulled harder.
Still stuck.
Years of corrosion had sealed it shut.
Behind them...
The footsteps grew louder.
Closer.
Lily looked back.
"Mom..."
"He's coming."
Julianna slammed her shoulder against the steel.
Pain shot through her injured arm.
Nothing.
Again.
The hinges groaned.
Still nothing.
Asset Zero appeared at the opposite end of the corridor.
His pistol remained lowered.
He didn't need to rush.
The trap was complete.
"There's nowhere left to run," he said calmly.
His voice carried no emotion.
Julianna stepped in front of Lily.
"If you want the drive..."
"You'll have to kill me."
Asset Zero tilted his head slightly.
"That is the assignment."
He slowly raised the pistol.
Lily buried her face against her mother's back.
Julianna closed her eyes for the briefest moment.
She wasn't praying.
She was preparing herself.
Then—
A deafening gunshot echoed through the station.
Asset Zero staggered sideways.
The bullet struck the concrete only inches from his head.
Not a warning.
A miss by less than an inch.
Instinctively, Asset Zero dove behind a support column.
His eyes narrowed.
Someone else was here.
A deep voice rolled through the darkness.
"You've gotten slower."
Asset Zero recognized the voice instantly.
For the first time in over a decade...
His expression changed.
Shock.
Impossible.
Another figure stepped out of the shadows at the far end of the platform.
Gray-haired.
Broad-shouldered.
Holding a pistol with absolute confidence.
Gabriel Cross.
The man who had trained him.
The only mentor he had ever respected.
Asset Zero lowered his weapon just enough to stare.
"They told me you were dead."
Gabriel gave a faint, humorless smile.
"I've been letting people believe that."
His eyes shifted briefly toward Julianna.
"Take Lily."
"Find the utility tunnel behind that electrical panel."
Julianna frowned.
"But the blueprint—"
"Oracle has the old blueprints."
Gabriel interrupted.
"I built this station's escape route myself."
He looked back at his former student.
"And I never put it on any map."
Asset Zero tightened his grip on the pistol.
"You should have stayed buried."
Gabriel's smile disappeared.
"And you should have remembered the first lesson I ever taught you."
"Never hunt someone..."
"...without checking who's hunting you."
The two men raised their weapons at exactly the same moment.
Teacher.
Student.
Hunter.
May you like
Protector.
The first battle of a much larger war was about to begin.
