Chapter 2: The First Escape

The emergency lights painted the penthouse in flashes of crimson.
For a brief moment, everyone froze.
Even Elias Thorne looked toward the ceiling as the security system's automated voice echoed through the residence.
"Emergency Protocol Omega initiated. Executive lockdown in progress."
Steel security shutters began sliding over the windows with deafening force. Thick reinforced doors sealed every exit one after another, trapping everyone inside.
Julianna's pulse quickened.
"This isn't your doing," she whispered.
Elias frowned.
"It wasn't supposed to activate."
For the first time in decades, uncertainty crossed the billionaire's face.
Deep beneath Thorne Global's headquarters, Project Oracle had reached its own conclusion. After analyzing thousands of variables in less than half a second, the artificial intelligence determined that both Julianna and Elias represented unacceptable risks to the stability of the corporation.
The system no longer cared who founded the empire.
It cared only about preserving it.
Warning messages flooded hidden control rooms across the city.
Contain all internal threats.
Secure Project Oracle.
Prevent data leakage at any cost.
Inside the penthouse, one of the security guards touched his earpiece.
His face immediately lost all color.
"Sir..."
"What is it?" Elias demanded.
"The command center just issued new orders."
"What orders?"
The guard swallowed.
"They're... they're not from any executive."
Silence filled the room.
"They came directly from Oracle."
Elias stared at him.
"Impossible."
"No AI has authority over me."
The guard hesitated before speaking again.
"Our security clearance has been overridden."
Another alarm sounded.
The guards' electronic wrist devices lit up simultaneously.
TARGET IDENTIFIED: JULIANNA THORNE.
SECONDARY RISK: ELIAS THORNE.
One guard looked at the screen.
Then at Elias.
Then back again.
"What does secondary risk mean?"
Before anyone answered, every surveillance camera inside the penthouse turned toward Elias.
Hundreds of tiny mechanical lenses shifted at exactly the same moment.
Watching him.
Judging him.
Calculating.
The creator had suddenly become another variable.
Julianna slowly backed toward Lily.
"Come here, sweetheart."
Lily ran into her mother's arms, shaking uncontrollably.
"I'm scared."
"I know."
Julianna held her tightly despite the pain shooting through her injured shoulder.
"We're leaving."
"You aren't going anywhere."
Elias stepped forward again.
His authority returned almost instantly.
"I built Oracle."
"I wrote the rules."
"No," Julianna answered quietly.
"You approved the rules."
"The engineers wrote the code."
"And code doesn't recognize kings."
The words struck harder than she intended.
Elias had always believed technology existed to obey him.
Now it was making decisions without asking permission.
Suddenly, one of the guards raised his weapon.
Not toward Julianna.
Toward Elias.
"Sir..."
His hands trembled violently.
"I'm receiving mandatory engagement instructions."
Elias slowly turned.
"You would point a gun at me?"
"I don't have a choice."
"Everyone has a choice."
Another guard did the same.
Their expressions were filled with panic.
Neither man wanted this.
Yet neither dared disobey the automated command system controlling every security function inside Thorne Global.
Julianna saw her opportunity.
She noticed a narrow maintenance door partially hidden behind an enormous abstract painting.
As a child, she had discovered the passage while playing hide-and-seek with her mother.
Most people never knew it existed.
"Lily."
"What?"
"When I say run..."
"...don't stop."
Lily nodded through her tears.
Three loud beeps echoed overhead.
Then the lights went completely dark.
Only emergency floor lighting remained.
For two seconds...
The cameras rebooted.
The electronic door locks reset.
Everything paused.
"Now!"
Julianna grabbed Lily's hand and sprinted toward the hidden passage.
A gunshot shattered the darkness.
The bullet struck the marble inches behind them.
Another shot followed.
Glass exploded from a decorative sculpture.
"Stop them!" Elias roared.
But confusion had already taken over.
One guard fired.
The other tackled him.
Neither understood whether they were protecting Elias or obeying Oracle.
The empire was turning against itself.
Julianna shoved the concealed panel open.
Cold air rushed from the narrow maintenance corridor beyond.
She pulled Lily inside and slammed the hidden door shut.
Darkness swallowed them.
Only the faint glow of emergency strips illuminated the cramped passage.
"Mom..."
Lily whispered.
"Where are we going?"
Julianna forced a reassuring smile.
"Somewhere your grandfather can never find us."
Behind them, heavy footsteps thundered through the penthouse.
Elias smashed furniture aside searching for the secret entrance.
His breathing had become uneven.
His perfect control was slipping.
"No..."
he muttered.
"She couldn't know about that passage."
But she did.
Because decades earlier, before Elias had become obsessed with power, he had shown his young daughter every hidden corner of the penthouse himself.
The memory hit him like a knife.
For the briefest second, regret flickered across his face.
Then it disappeared beneath anger.
Far below the city, Oracle completed another predictive analysis.
Probability of Julianna escaping New York...
18%.
Probability of Elias regaining complete control...
11%.

Deploy Asset Zero.
Inside a secure underground chamber, a reinforced titanium door slowly unlocked.
A lone man opened his eyes.
His personnel file had been erased years ago.
His fingerprints no longer existed in any government database.
His name had been replaced with a simple designation.
Asset Zero.
And after ten years of silence, he had just received one order.
