Chapter 5: The Mentor's Gambit

The first shot shattered the silence.
Gabriel Cross fired before Asset Zero could fully align his weapon.
The bullet ricocheted off a steel support beam, forcing Asset Zero to dive behind a concrete pillar. Sparks burst into the darkness as fragments of rusted metal rained onto the abandoned tracks.
Julianna didn't hesitate.
"Come on, Lily!"
She grabbed her daughter's hand and sprinted toward the electrical panel Gabriel had pointed out.
Behind them, another pair of suppressed shots echoed through the station.
Neither man wasted ammunition.
They knew each other's instincts too well.
Gabriel slid behind a broken ticket booth, his breathing slow and controlled.
"Still aiming center mass," he called out.
"You never broke that habit."
Asset Zero's voice came from somewhere in the shadows.
"And you still talk too much."
A flash of light.
Another gunshot.
The glass beside Gabriel exploded into thousands of glittering fragments.
He smiled faintly.
"Good."
"You've improved."
Years ago, Gabriel had transformed frightened recruits into elite operatives. Asset Zero had been his brightest student—disciplined, intelligent, almost impossible to surprise.
But Gabriel also remembered something Oracle never could.
Every student carried predictable instincts.
Every habit left a pattern.
Julianna reached the electrical panel embedded in the wall.
At first glance, it looked abandoned.
Covered in dust.
Rust streaked the hinges.
"There!" Gabriel shouted without turning.
"The bottom latch!"
Julianna pulled the lower latch instead of the obvious handle.
A loud metallic click echoed through the tunnel.
The entire panel slowly swung outward.
Behind it lay a narrow passage illuminated by dim emergency lights.
Lily stared.
"A secret tunnel?"
Gabriel nodded once.
"Go!"
"But what about you?"
"I'll catch up."
Julianna wanted to argue.
Instead, she understood.
Someone had to keep Asset Zero occupied.
She pulled Lily into the hidden corridor.
The panel quietly closed behind them.
Asset Zero immediately noticed.
"They escaped."
Gabriel shrugged.
"Looks that way."
"You knew about the passage."
"I designed it."
Silence.
Asset Zero slowly stepped into the open.
His pistol remained perfectly steady.
"Oracle never mentioned another tunnel."
"It couldn't."
Gabriel answered calmly.
"I built this one after Elias started changing."
"You altered company infrastructure without authorization?"
"I stopped trusting your employer."
Asset Zero studied him carefully.
"Then why didn't you destroy Oracle years ago?"
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"Because I believed Elias would eventually listen."
He looked toward the ceiling.
"I was wrong."
Miles away, inside Thorne Global Headquarters, dozens of executives crowded the command center.
Wall-sized monitors displayed live surveillance feeds from across New York.
Red warning icons flashed continuously.
Oracle's predictions updated every second.
A young systems engineer suddenly stood up.
"Sir!"
Elias turned sharply.
"What?"
"The AI just changed its priority list."
"What does that mean?"
The engineer swallowed nervously.
"It has added... another target."
The giant screen refreshed.
PRIMARY TARGET
Julianna Thorne
SECONDARY TARGET
Encrypted Data Drive
HIGH-PRIORITY THREAT
Gabriel Cross
Estimated Threat Level:
CRITICAL
Elias stared at the screen.
"So..."
He was alive after all.
One executive looked confused.
"I thought Cross died years ago."
Elias answered without emotion.
"I made sure everyone believed that."
Gabriel slowly backed toward the hidden corridor.
He had delayed Asset Zero long enough.
Now survival mattered more than winning.
Asset Zero recognized the movement.
"You're retreating."
"No."
Gabriel smiled.
"I'm repositioning."
He suddenly kicked a loose steel toolbox across the floor.
The heavy metal container slammed into an old electrical transformer.
The resulting explosion plunged the station into complete darkness.
Emergency lights died instantly.
Smoke filled the air.
Asset Zero closed his eyes.
He didn't rely on vision.
He listened.
Dripping water.
Falling debris.
Footsteps.
One set.
Moving left.
He fired twice.
Both bullets struck empty concrete.
Gabriel was already somewhere else.
For the first time in years...
Asset Zero had lost track of his target.
Inside the hidden tunnel, Julianna and Lily continued running.
The passage gradually sloped upward.
Fresh air drifted through old ventilation shafts.
Lily finally spoke.
"Who is that man?"
"Gabriel?"
Julianna nodded while catching her breath.
"He used to protect our family."
"Can we trust him?"
She thought for a moment.
"I trust him more than anyone connected to my father."
Ahead, a heavy steel door blocked the passage.
Unlike the others, it looked newer.
Recently maintained.
Attached to it was a biometric scanner.
Julianna frowned.
"This wasn't here before."
A small screen suddenly illuminated.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED
WELCOME, JULIANNA THORNE
The locking bolts disengaged one by one.
The door slowly opened.
Beyond it wasn't another tunnel.
It was a fully equipped underground operations center.
Computer servers hummed quietly.
Satellite communication systems lined the walls.
Digital maps covered enormous monitors.
Someone had secretly built an entire command center beneath Manhattan.
At the center of the room stood a large table.
On it rested dozens of neatly organized folders.
Every single one bore the same title.
PROJECT ORACLE
Julianna stepped inside in disbelief.
"What is this place?"
A familiar voice answered from the darkness.
"It's the insurance policy your father never knew existed."
The lights came on.
An elderly woman with silver hair stepped forward wearing a dark blue suit.
Despite her age, her posture remained perfectly straight.
She looked directly at Julianna.
"I've been waiting twenty years to meet you."
Julianna searched her memory.
Then her eyes widened.
"It can't be..."
The woman gave a small smile.
"Yes."
"My name is Margaret Holloway."
Julianna's heart pounded.
Margaret Holloway had officially died in a private plane crash eighteen years earlier.
She had also been the lead architect who designed the original core of Project Oracle.
And according to every public record...
She was dead.
But she was standing right in front of them.
Alive.
May you like
Waiting.
And she held answers capable of bringing down the most powerful empire in the world.
