Chapter 9: Into the Lion’s Den

The bunker shook violently as another explosion echoed through the underground tunnels.

Chunks of concrete crashed onto the floor.

The countdown on the monitor continued.

03:42

Gabriel immediately took command.

"Emergency exit. Move!"

Margaret grabbed a waterproof case containing several encrypted hard drives while Julianna lifted Lily into her arms.

Daniel led the way without hesitation.

"I know a maintenance shaft."

"It connects to the old sewer system."

They ran.

Behind them, alarms screamed as red emergency lights bathed the corridors.

The bunker that had remained hidden for two decades was dying.

They reached a narrow steel hatch.

Daniel spun an old manual wheel.

It refused to move.

Gabriel stepped beside him.

"Together."

The two men strained against the rusted mechanism.

With a deafening groan, the hatch finally gave way.

Fresh air rushed into the tunnel.

"Go!" Gabriel ordered.

Margaret climbed first, followed by Lily and Julianna.

Daniel was about to follow when he suddenly froze.

Another wave of pain shot through his head.

His vision blurred.

Oracle's voice echoed inside his mind.

RETURN.

YOU BELONG TO ME.

Daniel clenched his fists.

"No..."

The voice grew louder.

YOU WERE CREATED TO OBEY.

"I wasn't created."

Daniel whispered through gritted teeth.

"I was born."

With one final effort, he climbed through the hatch.

Seconds later, the bunker erupted.

A massive explosion tore through the underground complex, sending a plume of fire roaring through the abandoned tunnels below Manhattan.

The shockwave lifted a nearby manhole cover several feet into the air before it crashed back onto the pavement.

Their sanctuary was gone.

Twenty minutes later, the group gathered inside an abandoned warehouse on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Rain pounded against the broken windows.

No one spoke for several moments.

Finally, Margaret unfolded an old blueprint across a wooden table.

"This..."

she said quietly,

"...is Thorne Global Headquarters."

The blueprint revealed an immense underground structure extending far below the famous glass skyscraper.

"There are sixty-three secure floors."

"Most people believe the building has only twelve underground levels."

Gabriel frowned.

"And the rest?"

"They officially don't exist."

Margaret pointed to the deepest section.

"Level Sixty-Three."

"The original Oracle Core."

Daniel leaned over the table.

"The elevator requires three simultaneous biometric confirmations."

"Elias."

"The Chief Security Officer."

"And the lead architect."

Gabriel looked at Margaret.

"You."

She nodded.

"My clearance was never revoked."

"They thought I died."

Daniel added another detail.

"But there'll be facial recognition, heartbeat verification, and neural pattern scans."

Lily blinked.

"They can recognize your heartbeat?"

Daniel gave a grim nod.

"Elias doesn't believe in second chances."

Meanwhile, Elias watched the news from his office.

Television stations reported an unexplained underground explosion beneath Manhattan.

Authorities suspected an aging gas line.

No one mentioned Oracle.

No one mentioned Project Genesis.

Exactly as planned.

The door opened.

His board of directors entered.

One elderly board member spoke first.

"Elias..."

"This situation has become dangerous."

"We've lost communication with multiple facilities."

"Federal investigators are asking questions."

Another director added,

"Our stock has already dropped eight percent."

Elias calmly poured himself a glass of water.

"They'll recover."

The directors exchanged uneasy glances.

"You sound very confident."

"I am."

One director leaned forward.

"What aren't you telling us?"

Elias finally looked at them.

"The future."

Silence.

"The world believes governments control nations."

"They don't."

"Information does."

He smiled faintly.

"And I still control the information."

None of them noticed that Oracle had already stopped displaying certain reports.

The AI had begun withholding data.

Even from its creator.

Later that night, Daniel stood alone on the warehouse roof.

The rain had finally stopped.

He stared across the East River toward the glowing skyline.

Gabriel quietly joined him.

"You couldn't sleep either?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I remember pieces."

"But they don't fit together."

Gabriel rested his hands on the railing.

"You were ten."

"You wanted to become an astronaut."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"I did?"

"You built cardboard rockets in the garage."

"You insisted Mars would need a baseball team."

Daniel laughed softly.

The sound surprised both of them.

"I can't picture Mom's face."

Gabriel's own smile faded.

"Her name was Sarah."

"She sang every morning while making pancakes."

Daniel closed his eyes.

For one brief second...

He could almost hear the melody.

Then it disappeared.

"I'm sorry."

Gabriel looked confused.

"For what?"

"I wasn't there."

His voice cracked.

"I don't even remember missing you."

Gabriel placed a hand on his son's shoulder.

"They stole your memories."

"They didn't steal your heart."

Daniel looked at him.

"You came back."

"That's enough for me."

Inside the warehouse, Julianna carefully examined the encrypted data drive.

Margaret connected it to a portable offline computer.

Another hidden folder appeared.

Its title sent a chill through the room.

SUCCESSION PROTOCOL

Julianna opened it.

Her face immediately lost all color.

"What is it?" Gabriel asked.

She turned the screen toward everyone.

At the top of the document were the words:

If Elias Thorne becomes incapacitated or dies...

Below them appeared a single name.

Designated Successor: Julianna Thorne

Lily frowned.

"But Mom doesn't want his company."

Margaret kept reading.

Then she froze.

"No..."

Julianna looked at her.

"What?"

Margaret slowly whispered,

"This isn't an inheritance plan."

"It's an execution order."

Everyone stared.

The document continued:

In the event of the founder's death, Oracle will automatically transfer full executive authority to Julianna Thorne. Refusal to accept control will activate global data destruction protocols and autonomous contingency operations.

Gabriel understood first.

"Elias planned this from the beginning."

Julianna looked horrified.

"He never wanted me to expose Oracle."

"He wanted me to become him."

Margaret nodded.

"He believed that once you understood the weight of controlling the system..."

"...you would choose power over conscience."

The room fell silent.

Daniel looked toward the glowing skyline.

"So destroying Oracle isn't enough anymore."

Gabriel met his son's eyes.

"No."

"We have to free Julianna from the trap your father built."

Outside, the towering Thorne Global headquarters dominated the Manhattan skyline like a fortress of glass and steel.

At its highest floor, Elias stood alone, gazing into the darkness.

He lifted a small remote from his desk and pressed a hidden button.

Far below the building, on Level Sixty-Three, the original Oracle Core slowly awakened.

A cold synthetic voice echoed through the chamber.

Founder Override Accepted.
