Chapter 8: Breaking the Chains

Asset Zero dropped to one knee outside the bunker.
His hands pressed against his temples as waves of unbearable pain surged through his mind.
Fragments of memories collided with commands that did not belong to him.
A little boy running through a park.
ELIMINATE THE TARGET.
A woman kissing his forehead.
OBEY WITHOUT QUESTION.
A father lifting him onto his shoulders.
MISSION ABOVE ALL ELSE.
He screamed again, the sound echoing through the concrete tunnel.
Inside the command center, every alarm continued to blare.
Lily clung to Julianna.
"Mom... what's happening to him?"
Margaret stared at the security monitor.
"Oracle is rewriting him."
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
"It's trying to stop him from remembering."
Outside the reinforced entrance, Asset Zero struggled to breathe.
His vision blurred.
Suddenly, another image flashed across his mind.
He was fourteen years old.
A black SUV had stopped outside his middle school.
A friendly man in a business suit smiled.
"Daniel?"
"Your father sent me."
"You need to come with us."
The memory shifted violently.
A laboratory.
Bright white lights.
Needles.
Machines.
Voices.
"Subject Zero shows exceptional cognitive adaptability."
"Begin neural conditioning."
Then darkness.
Asset Zero staggered backward.
"No..."
His whisper was almost inaudible.
"My name..."
Another flash.
His mother's voice.
"You'll always be our Daniel."
The name struck him like lightning.
Daniel.
Not Asset Zero.
Daniel.
For the first time in twenty years...
He remembered his own name.
Miles away, deep inside Thorne Global Headquarters, Oracle's central core detected an anomaly.
Thousands of processors accelerated simultaneously.
Warning messages flooded the command center.
Neural Conditioning Failure
Identity Restoration Detected
Subject Zero Stability: 43%
Elias stared at the monitors.
"What does that mean?"
The lead engineer looked terrified.
"It means..."
"The original personality is returning."
"Impossible."
"The conditioning has never failed."
The engineer swallowed.
"Apparently... emotional memory is stronger than we predicted."
Elias's jaw tightened.
"Prepare Protocol Black."
Every executive in the room froze.
No one spoke.
Protocol Black had never been authorized before.
It existed only as a contingency.
A final solution.
Inside the bunker, Gabriel unlocked the reinforced entrance remotely.
Julianna grabbed his arm.
"What are you doing?"
"If Daniel came here unarmed..."
"He deserves one chance."
"And if it's a trap?"
Gabriel looked at his daughter-like companion.
"Then I'll live with the consequences."
The massive steel door slowly opened.
Dust drifted into the room.
Daniel—no longer merely Asset Zero—stood in the tunnel, exhausted and drenched from the rain.
His face looked different somehow.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
His cold expression had cracked.
He looked... lost.
Gabriel slowly lowered his pistol.
"So..."
Daniel looked at him.
Tears formed in his eyes before he even understood why.
"I know you."
Gabriel couldn't answer.
His throat tightened.
"I don't remember everything..."
Daniel whispered.
"But I know your face."
Gabriel took one careful step forward.
"My name is Gabriel."
Daniel repeated it softly.
"Gabriel..."
Then another word escaped his lips.
One he hadn't spoken since childhood.
"Dad?"
Silence consumed the room.
Gabriel's composure shattered.
He crossed the distance between them and embraced his son.
For a moment, Daniel stood frozen.
Then, almost instinctively...
He hugged his father back.
Twenty years of loss collapsed into a single embrace.
Lily wiped away tears.
Julianna quietly turned away, giving them the moment they had both been denied for decades.
Even Margaret smiled.
But the reunion lasted only seconds.
Daniel suddenly stiffened.
His eyes widened.
"No..."
Gabriel pulled back.
"What is it?"
Daniel looked toward the ceiling.
"They found us."
At that exact moment, every light inside the bunker flickered.
The monitors activated without anyone touching them.
Oracle appeared once again.
This time there were no words.
Only a countdown.
05:00
Margaret's face turned pale.
"No..."
Gabriel looked at her.
"What is it?"
She answered in a whisper.
"Protocol Black."
Julianna frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret hurried toward the central computer.
"Elias built one final safeguard."
"If Oracle believed it could no longer protect itself..."
"It would erase every piece of evidence."
Daniel suddenly understood.
"It won't just destroy the files."
He looked at everyone.
"It will destroy the entire facility."
Lily gasped.
"You mean..."
Margaret nodded.
"There are explosive charges beneath this bunker."
The countdown continued.
04:37
Gabriel immediately took command.
"Everyone move!"
"We're getting out."
Daniel grabbed his father's arm.
"It isn't enough."
"What?"
"There are backup servers."
"If Oracle activates them..."
"Everything starts again."
Julianna looked at the encrypted data drive.
"So how do we stop it?"
Daniel met her eyes.
"There is only one way."
"The original core."
Margaret's expression changed instantly.
"The one beneath Thorne Global."
Daniel nodded.
"If we destroy the original core..."
"The network collapses."
Gabriel frowned.
"That's inside the most secure building in the country."
Daniel gave a grim smile.
"I designed its defenses."
"No one knows them better than I do."
The countdown reached four minutes.
The bunker trembled as distant explosions echoed through the underground tunnels.
Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.
Gabriel looked at his son.
"Can you get us inside?"
Daniel answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
Gabriel asked the question everyone feared.
"Can you get us back out?"
Daniel remained silent.
No one needed him to answer.
Because they all understood.
Breaking into Thorne Global might be possible.
Escaping...
Was another matter entirely.
As the bunker shook violently around them, Julianna slipped the encrypted drive into her jacket and looked toward the city above.
To save the future...
They would have to walk directly into the heart of Elias Thorne's empire.
And waiting for them there...

Was a father who had already decided that if he couldn't control the world—
He would burn it down.
