Chapter 6 - The Missing Signature.

Eli collapsed before Charlotte could ask another question.

Daniel lowered him carefully onto the marble.

One of the officers called for the hotel medic.

Vanessa stared at the brass key in Charlotte's hand.

Her expression was not confusion.

It was recognition.

Charlotte closed her fist around it.

"Tell me what this opens."

Vanessa looked away.

"I don't know."

"Eli nearly died carrying it."

"Then ask him."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"He just did."

Daniel rose from beside Eli.

"Charlotte, the board meeting changes everything."

"No."

She looked toward the private elevator.

"It makes the penthouse more important."

The police wanted statements first.

Charlotte refused to leave the building.

After several tense minutes, the lead officer agreed to station two officers in the lobby while detectives verified the trust documents.

Daniel reopened the elevator using Charlotte's owner override.

Vanessa moved to follow.

Charlotte blocked the doorway.

"Not you."

Vanessa's face hardened.

"If the board meets tonight, my family's vote matters."

"Then wait downstairs and decide whether you want to keep protecting the people who just tried to steal evidence in a blackout."

The doors closed between them.

Daniel and Charlotte rode upward in silence.

The numbers climbed past fourteen.

Fifteen.

Sixteen.

Daniel finally spoke.

"Your mother changed in the last month of her life."

Charlotte kept her eyes on the floor display.

"How?"

"She stopped using company drivers."

"She canceled meetings without explanations."

"And she asked me strange questions about security logs."

Charlotte turned toward him.

"Why didn't you tell the police?"

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Victor told us she was becoming paranoid."

Charlotte laughed without humor.

"Convenient."

The elevator reached nineteen.

Penthouse 1901 occupied the entire eastern wing.

The corridor outside was dark except for wall sconces.

A strip of official tape crossed the suite door.

Daniel frowned.

"That wasn't here yesterday."

Charlotte held up the brass key.

It did not fit the main lock.

She scanned the doorframe.

Nothing.

Then she noticed a tiny brass plate behind a decorative molding.

The key slid inside perfectly.

A hidden panel opened.

Behind it was a mechanical lock older than the hotel's electronic system.

Charlotte turned the key.

The suite door clicked open.

The air inside was stale.

Dust floated through the beam of Daniel's phone light.

A half-empty glass of water still sat beside Eleanor's favorite chair, long evaporated into a mineral ring.

Charlotte touched the back of the chair but could not sit.

The room felt preserved at the exact moment her family had stopped being a family.

Furniture sat beneath white sheets.

Her mother's perfume still lingered faintly in the room.

Charlotte froze.

For one terrible second, grief swallowed everything else.

Daniel waited.

Charlotte forced herself forward.

On Eleanor Vale's desk sat a single envelope.

CHARLOTTE was written across it in her mother's hand.

Inside was a photocopy of Charlotte's supposed resignation from the family trust.

The signature looked perfect.

Too perfect.

A handwritten note was clipped behind it.

Your signature was copied from your passport renewal file.

Charlotte's hands began to shake.

Beneath the note was a list of four names.

Victor Hale.

Board Chairman Arthur Bell.

General Counsel Miriam Cross.

Vanessa Laurent.

Daniel stared at the final name.

Charlotte did too.

May you like

Then a floorboard creaked behind them.

Someone else was inside the penthouse.
