Chapter 12 - The Vote Before Midnight.

Applause did not come.

The ballroom remained painfully quiet.

Charlotte walked between the tables with a copy of the ledger beneath one arm.

She could feel people staring at the bruises Vanessa had helped put on her face.

Vanessa entered separately and joined her father near the board table.

He whispered something furious into her ear.

She did not answer.

Victor stepped down from the stage.

"Charlotte."

He kissed the air beside her cheek as if they were family.

Charlotte resisted the urge to recoil.

"Where is my father?"

Victor's smile never changed.

"That is a very serious accusation to make in public."

"It wasn't an accusation."

Charlotte held his eyes.

"It was a question."

Chairman Arthur Bell approached with two attorneys.

He was broad, silver-haired, and visibly irritated by Charlotte's existence.

"This gathering is not the place for theatrics."

Charlotte looked around the ballroom.

"Then maybe you shouldn't have scheduled a corporate execution between dessert and coffee."

Several guests murmured.

Arthur's mouth tightened.

"The board session begins in twelve minutes."

"Your legal status will be reviewed there."

"My legal status?"

Charlotte opened the copied ledger.

"Should we review yours too?"

Arthur saw his name and immediately closed the book with one hand.

That reaction told everyone nearby enough.

Victor remained calm.

"Forgery is becoming a habit with you."

Charlotte looked directly at Miriam.

The attorney stepped forward.

"The forged document was Charlotte's resignation."

Arthur went still.

Victor's eyes sharpened.

Miriam continued.

"I prepared it."

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Victor spoke softly.

"Careful, Miriam."

She looked at him.

"I have spent months being careful."

"It almost got me killed."

Daniel appeared near the doors with two detectives.

Victor's confidence finally flickered.

Charlotte noticed Arthur notice it too.

For the first time, the chairman looked less like Victor's partner and more like a man wondering whether the protection he had purchased was disappearing.

The alliance around the table was beginning to fracture, but fractured men could still cast votes.

Then every phone at the board table chimed.

Arthur checked his screen.

His face changed from anger to relief.

"We have an injunction."

Charlotte felt the room shift again.

An emergency order from a county judge temporarily prohibited Charlotte from exercising ownership authority until the authenticity of the trust amendment could be established.

Victor smiled.

"You see?"

"The law still matters."

Miriam read the order over Arthur's shoulder.

"This was filed yesterday."

Charlotte stared at Victor.

He had prepared the injunction before she revealed herself.

He had known she was coming.

"Who told you I was alive?"

Victor's eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Charlotte followed them.

Vanessa looked stricken.

Her father stepped away from her.

"You told him?"

Charlotte asked.

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Victor answered for her.

"She told me everything."

Charlotte felt the betrayal like cold water.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not everything."

Victor turned toward the boardroom doors.

"Enough."

Arthur announced that the vote would proceed under the court order.

The board members began filing inside.

Charlotte looked at the clock above the ballroom.

11:41 p.m.

Nineteen minutes until midnight.

Then Vanessa grabbed Charlotte's wrist.

"I did tell him you were alive."

Charlotte pulled away.

Vanessa's eyes filled with something close to shame.

"But I lied about what you had."

May you like

She slipped a tiny recording device into Charlotte's palm.

"And Victor spent the last forty minutes confessing because he thought I was still on his side."
