Chapter 14 - The Price of Silence.

Vanessa's recorder began with the sound of clinking glass.

Victor's voice followed.

"Once Charlotte is legally suspended, she becomes irrelevant."

No one at the table moved.

Then Vanessa's recorded voice asked,

"And Thomas?"

Victor laughed.

"Thomas has been irrelevant for thirteen years."

Charlotte's fingers tightened against the table.

On the recording, Vanessa asked whether Thomas would be released after the vote.

Victor answered with four words.

"Dead men don't testify."

Gabriel Laurent stood so abruptly his chair struck the wall.

"You told me Thomas was already dead."

Victor looked at him with contempt.

"Sit down, Gabriel."

"You used me."

"You accepted every dollar."

Gabriel's face collapsed.

Vanessa stared at her father.

"How much?"

He could not look at her.

"Twenty-eight million."

The figure from the ledger.

Charlotte watched Gabriel's hands tremble against the polished table.

She wondered how many dinners he had attended with Eleanor after taking that money.

How many times he had raised a glass to the Vale family while helping Victor drain it from behind closed doors.

The betrayal was not abstract anymore.

It had faces, voices, and table manners.

Gabriel's confession changed the room because it was not forced from him by police.

He could still have lied.

He could still have protected the fortune that bought his houses, his influence, and Vanessa's place among the city's elite.

Instead, for reasons even he seemed unable to explain, he finally chose shame over another lie.

Vanessa stepped backward as though he had struck her.

"You let me think he was blackmailing you."

Gabriel whispered.

"I was trying to protect you."

She laughed once, bitter and broken.

"Everyone in this family seems to call lying protection."

Charlotte felt that sentence land inside her too.

Arthur slammed his palm against the table.

"This meeting is out of control."

Miriam turned on him.

"Because the evidence is inconvenient?"

Arthur looked at the clock.

11:53 p.m.

"The motion is still valid."

Charlotte stared at him.

"You heard a man discuss killing my father."

"And we have not authenticated the recording."

"You are unbelievable."

Arthur's face hardened.

"I am protecting the corporation from chaos."

Charlotte stood.

"No."

"You're protecting the chair beneath you."

Arthur ignored her and called for the vote.

One by one, board members answered.

Yes.

Yes.

No.

Abstain.

Charlotte counted silently.

Victor needed Gabriel's twelve-percent voting block to reach the required threshold.

Arthur turned toward him.

"Mr. Laurent?"

Gabriel looked at Vanessa.

She did not plead.

She only stared at him.

He lowered his head.

"No."

Victor's expression finally broke.

"Think carefully."

Gabriel looked back at him.

"For the first time in years, I am."

Without Gabriel, the motion failed by two votes.

A breath left Charlotte's lungs.

But Victor began smiling again.

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and went pale.

Charlotte knew before he spoke that something had gone wrong.

"The detectives traced the vehicle carrying Thomas."

"Where?"

Daniel looked at Victor.

"Back to this hotel."

Everyone turned toward the windows as fire alarms suddenly began flashing.

A recorded voice ordered guests to evacuate.

Victor remained seated.

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"What did you do?"

Victor looked at his watch.

11:57 p.m.

"You wanted your father back."

He stood.

May you like

"You have three minutes to find him."

Smoke began curling beneath the boardroom door.
