Chapter 15 - The False Arrest.

The ballroom erupted into chaos.
Guests rushed toward the main staircases while alarms screamed overhead.
Hotel staff tried to direct people toward emergency exits.
Charlotte pushed against the flow.
"Where would he hide my father?"
Daniel was already checking building plans on his iPad.
"If Victor brought him inside without cameras seeing him, he used the service dock."
Miriam coughed as smoke thickened near the ceiling.
"Basement."
Vanessa grabbed Charlotte's arm.
"The old wine storage rooms connect to the dock."
They reached the service stairs.
Two police officers appeared from below.
Charlotte felt relief for half a second.
Then the lead officer raised his hand.
"Charlotte Vale, stop."
Daniel slowed.
"Her father may be trapped downstairs."
The officer produced handcuffs.
"We have a new warrant for Ms. Vale's arrest."
Charlotte stared at him.
"For what now?"
"Extortion, evidence tampering, and conspiracy to manipulate the Solmere board vote."
Vanessa laughed in disbelief.
"You cannot be serious."
The officer held up his phone.
A video showed Charlotte sitting in a dark room, apparently telling someone to fabricate evidence against Victor.
The face was hers.
The fake video was disturbingly good.
Even Charlotte felt a moment of vertigo watching her own mouth form words she had never spoken.
She realized Victor did not merely want to defeat her legally.
He wanted every stranger watching the news to believe she was unstable before she ever reached a courtroom.
The voice was hers.
But Charlotte had never said those words.
Daniel stared.
"Deepfake."
Miriam nodded immediately.
"The lighting around the mouth is wrong."
The officer did not lower the cuffs.
"You can argue that in court."
Charlotte looked beyond him toward the basement door.
Smoke was growing thicker.
"My father is down there."
"You're coming with us."
"Then arrest me after I get him out."
The officer stepped forward.
Daniel moved between them.
"You have an active fire emergency and a possible hostage."
"Stand aside, Mr. Mercer."
Charlotte heard a faint sound through the basement door.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Three more.
Her heart stopped.
Her father used to knock on her bedroom door exactly that way when she was a child.
"He's there."
Charlotte pushed past the officer.
He caught her shoulder.
Vanessa suddenly slammed the fire extinguisher cabinet open.
The metal door struck the officer's arm.
He released Charlotte.
"Go!"
Vanessa shouted.
Charlotte ran down the stairs with Daniel behind her.
The basement corridor was filled with haze but not open flame.
Emergency strobes painted the concrete walls red, then white, then red again.
Charlotte could hear hundreds of people evacuating somewhere above them.
The hotel had been designed to make guests forget the machinery beneath its luxury.
Down here, stripped of marble and chandeliers, Solmere looked like what it truly was: steel, pipes, locked doors, and secrets.
Daniel noticed it first.
"This smoke is artificial."
Charlotte looked at the ceiling vents.
Stage smoke poured through them.
The fire was another distraction.
They followed the knocking to an old wine room.
The door was chained from the outside.
Daniel broke the weak latch with a fire axe.
Inside, a wheelchair sat beneath a bare bulb.
Thomas Vale raised his head.
Charlotte stopped in the doorway.
Thirteen years disappeared from her face.
"Dad."
He began to cry.
"Birdie."
She crossed the room and dropped to her knees in front of him.
His hands were thin but warm when they touched her face.
"Your mother said you'd come."
Charlotte swallowed hard.
"Mom knew where you were?"
Thomas nodded.
"She was trying to get me out."
Footsteps approached outside.
Daniel raised the axe.
Victor Hale appeared in the doorway holding a pistol.
Behind him stood the same police officer who had tried to arrest Charlotte.

Victor smiled at Thomas.
"Family reunions are always so emotional."
