Chapter 18 - The Lobby Reckoning.

By 12:42 a.m., the Solmere lobby looked nothing like it had three hours earlier.

Fire crews moved through the service corridors.

Police filled the entrances.

Guests clustered behind velvet barriers while reporters pressed against the glass doors outside.

Charlotte entered the lobby beside Thomas.

Every camera turned toward them.

The same marble floor where Vanessa had dragged Charlotte now became the path of her return.

Charlotte did not walk faster for the cameras.

She did not straighten her shoulders for the guests.

She simply moved beside her father at the pace his wheelchair allowed.

That quiet procession unsettled the lobby more than a dramatic entrance could have.

No one could pretend the earlier cruelty had happened to someone anonymous anymore.

Charlotte looked down at the faint smear of dried blood still visible near the reception desk.

She remembered the laughter.

She remembered no one stepping forward.

Now everyone stepped aside.

Victor stood near the center of the lobby with Arthur Bell and three attorneys.

He looked at Thomas in the wheelchair.

"Convincing."

Thomas stared back.

"You always were a coward, Victor."

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Victor's smile tightened.

Arthur raised a hand.

"Until identity is verified, this spectacle has no legal significance."

Charlotte held up the black tablet.

"Good."

"Let's verify it."

Daniel connected the device to the lobby's presentation system.

A giant screen above reception came alive.

Miriam displayed Thomas's archived passport, medical records, fingerprints, and the photographs recovered from St. Arden.

A detective announced that preliminary fingerprint comparison matched Thomas Vale's historic records.

The lobby erupted.

Victor's attorneys began speaking at once.

Charlotte raised the ledger.

"And this documents more than one hundred million dollars moved through companies connected to Victor Hale, Arthur Bell, and Gabriel Laurent."

Gabriel stood beside Vanessa several yards away.

He stepped forward.

"My signature is real."

Vanessa looked at him.

Gabriel continued.

"I took the money."

Arthur stared at him in disbelief.

"You idiot."

Gabriel looked exhausted.

"Maybe."

"But I'm finished lying for you."

The crowd exploded into whispers again.

Victor moved toward the exit.

Two detectives blocked him.

"Mr. Hale, stay where you are."

He stopped.

Charlotte stepped closer.

For the first time that night, they stood face-to-face without anyone between them.

"You should have stayed gone," Victor whispered.

Charlotte looked at the bruises reflected in the marble beneath them.

"You should have made sure I was dead."

Victor smiled faintly.

"Your mother said something similar."

Thomas lunged forward in his wheelchair.

Daniel caught him.

Charlotte's blood turned cold.

"What did you do to her?"

Victor looked at the cameras surrounding them.

Then he smiled wider.

"Prove it."

Charlotte slowly lifted Daniel's iPad.

The recording from the wine room was already queued.

Victor heard his own voice say,

"You should have died the first time."

His expression changed.

Then Vanessa stepped beside Charlotte.

"There's more."

She played her private recording.

Dead men don't testify.

Victor looked toward the exits.

Police closed around him.

But Arthur Bell suddenly raised his voice from the boardroom doors.

"The sale vote begins in ten minutes."

Charlotte stared at him.

Arthur smiled coldly.

May you like

"Arrest Victor if you want."

"You still haven't stopped me."
