Chapter 5 - The Board Behind the Smile.

The elevator smelled faintly of perfume and metal.
Charlotte stared at the message on the mirror.
CHARLOTTE, DON'T GO.
The handwriting was hurried.
Uneven.
Daniel stepped closer without entering.
"Do you recognize it?"
Charlotte shook her head.
Vanessa remained several feet behind them.
Her face had lost all of its color.
Charlotte turned.
"You do."
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"No."
"You're lying."
"You don't know anything about me."
Charlotte stepped out of the elevator again.
"I know you knew the private trust amendment existed."
Vanessa said nothing.
"I know you knew Penthouse 1901 mattered before my mother's recording said it."
Daniel watched her carefully.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Victor tells me things."
"Why?"
"Because I advise the board."
Charlotte laughed softly.
"You host charity dinners."
The insult landed.
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"My family owns twelve percent of Solmere Holdings."
Charlotte stopped smiling.
That was new.
Daniel looked equally surprised.
Vanessa continued before either could speak.
"Your mother needed us after your father died."
"We stabilized the company."
"We kept it alive while you ran around Europe pretending the empire wasn't your responsibility."
Charlotte felt the accusation strike a place already full of guilt.
Vanessa had found the one wound Charlotte could not dismiss.
Charlotte had missed birthdays, charity dinners, quarterly meetings, and the final Christmas her mother had tried to spend with her.
She had called independence what was partly fear.
But regret did not make forged signatures legal, and guilt did not make thieves rightful owners.
She had left.
She had spent three years avoiding board meetings, family expectations, and the suffocating future her surname had built around her.
Then her mother died.
By the time Charlotte came home, her access cards were dead, her accounts were frozen, and the family lawyers insisted she had signed away temporary control.
She had not.
Someone had forged her signature.
"You didn't save Solmere," Charlotte said.
"You carved it up."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Be careful."
"Why?"
Charlotte gestured toward her bruised face.
"You'll drag me across my own floor again?"
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel's phone vibrated.
He read the message and swore under his breath.
"What?"
He turned the screen toward Charlotte.
An emergency meeting of the Solmere Holdings board had been called for 11:30 that night.
Agenda: removal of disputed Vale ownership rights.
Charlotte checked the time.
9:08 p.m.
Daniel looked grim.
"If they get a supermajority vote before you establish your claim, they can lock the trust in litigation for years."
"How many votes does Victor control?"
"Enough if Vanessa's family supports him."
Charlotte turned to Vanessa.
Vanessa's expression became guarded again.
"Don't look at me like that."
"Which side are you on?"
"The side that survives tonight."
The private elevator chimed.
All three turned.
No one had pressed a button.
The doors slowly closed, then reopened.
A hotel employee stumbled out.
He was young, pale, and shaking.
A deep cut ran across his forehead.
He held an old brass key in one hand.
Daniel caught him before he fell.
"Eli?"
The employee grabbed Charlotte's wrist.
"Your mother told me to give you this."
Charlotte stared at the key.
"When?"
Eli's eyes filled with terror.
"The night she died."
May you like
Then he looked over Charlotte's shoulder at Vanessa.
"And she said never let that woman reach the penthouse first."
