Chapter 1 - Marble and Blood.

The lobby of the Solmere Hotel fell into a suffocating silence.

Crystal chandeliers burned above the polished marble like frozen stars.

Charlotte Vale felt the cold floor against her knees and the copper taste of blood at the back of her throat.

Vanessa Laurent still had one hand twisted in the fabric of Charlotte's gray tank top.

The blonde socialite looked immaculate in white silk.

Charlotte looked like she had survived a car wreck.

That contrast was exactly what Vanessa wanted the room to see.

"Get out."

Vanessa released Charlotte with a small shove.

"People like you don't belong here."

A few guests turned away.

Others stared openly.

No one moved to help.

Charlotte lowered her eyes to the black tablet lying beneath her scraped palm.

Its screen was dark.

That was good.

If Vanessa saw what was stored inside, Charlotte might never leave the lobby alive.

Charlotte breathed in slowly through her nose.

Pain flashed behind her eyes.

She remembered her mother's voice from three nights earlier, preserved in a recording Charlotte had listened to more times than she could count.

Never trust the board.

Never sign anything Victor gives you.

And if they tell you I died naturally, make them prove it.

The recording had ended with a noise that still woke Charlotte at night.

The memory was worse because Charlotte had ignored her mother's last three calls that evening.

She had been angry about another argument over coming home to join the company.

By the time she called back, Eleanor was already dead.

That guilt had followed Charlotte through airports, rented rooms, and months of hiding.

Tonight, it had followed her all the way back to Solmere.

A door opening.

Her mother's frightened breath.

Then nothing.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Did you hear me?"

Charlotte lifted her chin.

Blood moved slowly from her nose toward her upper lip.

Her eyes did not leave Vanessa's.

"You don't know who I am."

Vanessa smiled as though a child had threatened her.

"I know exactly what you are."

A hotel security guard took one cautious step forward.

Before he reached Charlotte, a man's voice cut through the lobby.

"What is going on here?"

Daniel Mercer, general manager of the Solmere, crossed the marble with an iPad tucked beneath one arm.

His black suit was perfect.

His expression was not.

He looked irritated, not concerned.

Charlotte recognized him immediately.

Daniel had attended her mother's funeral.

He had stood three rows behind the family and never once approached Charlotte.

Now he looked directly at her without recognition.

That hurt more than she expected.

Vanessa gave him a thin smile.

"This woman slipped past security and became aggressive."

Charlotte almost laughed.

Her split lip made the impulse painful.

Daniel frowned at her.

Then his gaze dropped.

The black tablet was half-visible beneath Charlotte's hand.

His expression changed so quickly that Vanessa noticed.

Daniel stopped walking.

His fingers tightened around his iPad.

"Where did you get that?"

Charlotte said nothing.

Vanessa looked between them.

"Daniel?"

He did not answer.

Charlotte pressed her bruised palm against the tablet's biometric panel.

The screen woke.

A gold symbol appeared against black glass.

The Vale family crest.

Daniel's face drained of color.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Charlotte looked up at both of them.

"This hotel belongs to me."

No one in the lobby laughed now.

Then Daniel's iPad chimed.

He looked down at the new message.

Whatever he read made him whisper one word.

"Run."
