Chapter 2 - The Name Nobody Asked.

Charlotte did not move.
Daniel's warning had been quiet enough that only she heard it.
Vanessa heard the fear in his voice anyway.
"What did you just say?"
Daniel locked his iPad screen.
"Nothing."
His answer came too fast.
Charlotte watched him carefully.
The manager she remembered had been loyal to her mother for almost fifteen years.
The man standing in front of her looked like someone trapped between two different orders.
Vanessa reached toward the black tablet.
Charlotte pulled it against her chest.
"Don't touch it."
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
"Security."
Two guards moved forward.
Daniel raised a hand.
"Stop."
The guards froze.
Vanessa turned on him.
"Excuse me?"
Daniel swallowed.
"That device is registered to the Vale family executive network."
A murmur moved through the crowd.
Charlotte could almost feel every powerful guest recalculating the scene.
The bleeding girl on the floor was no longer invisible.
A woman near the concierge desk lowered the phone she had been using to record the humiliation.
A banker who had laughed moments earlier suddenly stared at the floor.
Charlotte noticed every change.
Power had not made these people kinder.
It had only made them uncertain about which side was safe.
Vanessa recovered quickly.
"Registered to a dead family, maybe."
Her voice was louder now.
"Charlotte Vale disappeared after Eleanor died."
Charlotte slowly stood.
Her legs shook once, then steadied.
"I didn't disappear."
She wiped blood from her mouth.
"Someone erased me."
Vanessa stared at her.
For the first time, genuine recognition flickered behind the arrogance.
It was gone almost immediately.
"That's impossible."
Charlotte tapped the tablet.
A legal document opened.
Across the top were the words SOLMERE HOLDINGS - CONTROLLING TRUST.
Her name appeared beneath them.
CHARLOTTE ELEANOR VALE.
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Documents can be forged."
"So can death certificates."
Daniel looked sharply at Charlotte.
That reaction told her more than any answer could.
Charlotte stepped closer.
"You knew something was wrong with my mother's death."
Daniel glanced toward the mezzanine.
Charlotte followed his eyes.
A man stood behind the glass railing above the lobby.
Tall.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
Victor Hale.
Chief financial officer of Solmere Holdings.
Her mother's oldest business partner.
The man who had called Charlotte two hours after Eleanor Vale's death and told her there had been an accident.
Victor gave Charlotte a small, almost fatherly smile.
Then he lifted his phone.
Daniel's iPad buzzed again.
This time Charlotte saw the message preview.
KEEP HER IN THE LOBBY.
Daniel immediately tilted the screen away.
Charlotte's stomach tightened.
Vanessa noticed none of it.
She stepped close enough for Charlotte to smell her expensive perfume.
"You have no idea how much trouble you've made for yourself."
Charlotte looked past her toward Victor.
"I think I do."
The elevator doors behind the reception desk opened.
Four uniformed police officers walked into the lobby.
Vanessa smiled again.
Daniel looked sick.
Victor remained above them, perfectly still.
The lead officer approached Charlotte.
"Charlotte Vale?"
Charlotte held the black tablet tighter.
"Yes."
May you like
The officer produced a pair of handcuffs.
"You're under arrest for the theft of confidential Solmere property."
