Chapter 20 - The Door She Leaves Open.

Morning light entered the Solmere lobby through the glass facade.

The chandeliers were still on, but they no longer dominated the room.

Sunlight did.

Charlotte stood near the same place where Vanessa had thrown her to the marble hours earlier.

Her face was cleaned but still bruised.

She had refused to hide the marks.

Thomas rested in a chair beside the windows while a doctor checked his blood pressure.

Daniel coordinated with police near reception.

Miriam sat with federal investigators and three boxes of recovered records.

Vanessa stood alone beside an orchid arrangement.

Victor was gone.

Arthur was gone.

But the detective's final revelation still hung over Charlotte.

Someone else had ordered Eleanor's death.

Victor had not been the top of the conspiracy.

The scheduled message contained only six words.

THE VALE GIRL KNOWS TOO MUCH.

The recipient used an encrypted number investigators had not yet identified.

Charlotte should have felt victorious.

Instead, she understood that winning back Solmere had only opened another door.

Thomas called her name.

She walked to him.

He studied her bruised cheek with visible guilt.

"Your mother would hate that I let this happen to you."

Charlotte sat beside him.

"You didn't."

"I disappeared."

"You were taken."

Thomas looked toward Eleanor's portrait above the lobby staircase.

"She spent thirteen years trying to protect both of us with secrets."

Charlotte followed his gaze.

"And secrets nearly destroyed us anyway."

Thomas nodded.

"So what happens now?"

Charlotte looked around the hotel.

Employees had begun returning to their stations.

Some stared at her nervously.

Others looked ashamed.

The security guard who had watched Vanessa drag her across the floor approached slowly.

"Ms. Vale."

Charlotte waited.

"I should have stopped her."

His voice was quiet.

"I didn't know who you were."

Charlotte held his gaze.

"That was the problem."

He looked confused.

Charlotte continued.

"You shouldn't need to know someone's last name before deciding they deserve help."

The guard lowered his head.

"Yes, ma'am."

Charlotte turned toward Daniel.

"New policy."

"No guest, employee, or stranger gets ignored because of how they look."

Daniel nodded.

"I'll write it today."

Vanessa finally approached.

"What happens to me?"

Charlotte studied her.

The white silk dress was stained from smoke and dust.

She no longer looked untouchable.

"Your family's shares will be investigated."

Vanessa nodded.

"And me?"

Charlotte paused.

"You answer every question the investigators ask."

"You testify against Victor."

"And you live with what you did before you decided to do the right thing."

Vanessa swallowed.

"That's fair."

She walked away without another word.

Daniel handed Charlotte the black tablet.

"There is one more thing."

A newly decrypted file from Eleanor's archive had appeared.

Charlotte opened it.

Her mother's face filled the screen.

Eleanor looked tired but alive.

"Charlotte, if you're watching this, then you came home."

Charlotte's throat tightened.

Eleanor smiled softly.

"Do not inherit my fear."

"Inherit the company if you want it."

"Change it if you can."

"Leave it if you must."

"But never let anyone convince you that your name is the source of your worth."

Charlotte covered her mouth as tears finally came.

Thomas reached for her hand.

The recording ended.

For a long moment, Charlotte said nothing.

Then she crossed the lobby toward the main doors.

Daniel called after her.

"Where are you going?"

Charlotte looked back at the hotel that had nearly erased her and now belonged to her again.

"Outside."

"For the first time in months, nobody is deciding for me."

The glass doors opened.

Charlotte stepped into the morning light.

Behind her, the Solmere remained standing.

Not as a throne.

Not as a prison.

As a choice.

And somewhere in the city, an unidentified phone received a notice that Victor Hale had failed.

The screen lit once.

May you like

A reply appeared.

THEN WE DEAL WITH CHARLOTTE OURSELVES.
