Chapter 9: The Vault Beneath Warehouse 14

Chapter 9: The Vault Beneath Warehouse 14

The photograph remained on Daniel's desk long after everyone else had gone to sleep.

Hannah couldn't take her eyes off it.

Aaron stood beside Caleb with one arm draped over his brother-in-law's shoulder. Both men were smiling as though they had no idea death was already closing in around them.

"They look happy," she whispered.

Daniel nodded.

"That picture was taken only a few days before Aaron died."

"You know that?"

"I recognize the jacket he was wearing. It was from a company safety meeting."

Hannah traced Aaron's face with her fingertips.

"I've never seen this photograph before."

"Which means someone kept it hidden."

"And waited until now to send it."

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

"The question is why."

Martin, standing beside the fireplace, folded his arms.

"Maybe someone wants to help."

Daniel shook his head.

"Or maybe someone wants us to walk into a trap."

Neither possibility could be ignored.

By sunrise, Daniel's black SUV rolled toward Blackstone Harbor.

The burned remains of Warehouse 14 stood alone near the water.

The building had been abandoned since the fire eight months earlier.

Police tape had long since disappeared.

Nature had begun reclaiming the property.

Weeds pushed through cracked concrete.

The steel frame was blackened from flames.

Several walls had collapsed inward.

Hannah stepped out of the SUV and stared at the ruins.

"This is where Aaron died?"

Daniel looked toward the twisted beams.

"No."

"He died two miles away."

She frowned.

"Then why was he here?"

"That's what we're about to find out."

Daniel had brought six trusted security officers.

Not his entire team.

Only the men who had been with him for years.

The kind who valued loyalty over money.

He trusted them with his life.

Inside the warehouse, sunlight poured through holes in the damaged roof.

Everything smelled of ash and rust.

Martin carefully examined the floor.

"The fire was intense."

Daniel nodded.

"Too intense."

"What do you mean?"

"Warehouse fires usually leave something behind."

He pointed around the room.

"Office furniture."

"Metal shelving."

"Machinery."

"There should be more."

Hannah looked around.

He was right.

The building looked...

Empty.

Almost as if someone had removed everything after the fire.

One of Daniel's guards walked over.

"Sir."

"What did you find?"

The guard held up a melted padlock.

"It was cut."

Daniel frowned.

"Before the fire?"

"I think afterward."

Someone had returned.

Cleaned the warehouse.

Taken whatever had survived.

But why leave the building standing?

Hannah slowly walked toward what had once been a small office.

Most of the walls had collapsed.

Only a corner of the room remained intact.

Something caught her eye.

A faint scratch on the concrete floor.

She knelt carefully despite her pregnancy.

The mark wasn't random.

It looked like...

A rectangle.

She brushed away layers of soot.

There.

A thin metal ring was embedded in the floor.

"Daniel."

He hurried over.

"What is it?"

"I think..."

She pulled gently on the ring.

Nothing happened.

"It won't move."

Daniel motioned for one of his guards.

"Crowbar."

Seconds later, the guard wedged the tool beneath the metal plate.

With a loud groan...

The concrete hatch lifted.

Cold air rushed upward.

Everyone froze.

Beneath the warehouse was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

Martin stared in disbelief.

"A basement?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"This building was never supposed to have one."

Daniel switched on a flashlight.

"I'll go first."

Hannah immediately objected.

"I'm coming."

"It's dangerous."

"So is staying behind."

Daniel hesitated.

Then nodded once.

"Stay close."

The staircase led nearly twenty feet underground.

At the bottom, they entered a small concrete room untouched by the fire above.

Dust covered every surface.

Metal filing cabinets lined one wall.

A heavy steel safe stood in the center.

It was old.

But intact.

Hannah's pulse quickened.

"The ledger..."

Daniel slowly approached the safe.

It required a key.

He looked at Hannah.

"The one Evelyn had."

She reached into her pocket.

Earlier that morning, Daniel had handed her the silver key recovered from Evelyn's abandoned car.

With trembling fingers, Hannah inserted it into the lock.

Click.

The safe door swung open.

Inside were several folders.

A flash drive.

A revolver.

And one thick black ledger.

No title.

No company logo.

Just plain black leather.

Daniel carefully opened it.

The first page listed dozens of names.

Shipping companies.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police officers.

Amounts.

Dates.

Secret account numbers.

Hannah's breathing became uneven.

"This is it."

Daniel turned another page.

Every illegal payment was documented in meticulous detail.

Millions of dollars.

Bribes.

Fraud.

Extortion.

Smuggling.

Everything.

Then Hannah noticed something else.

Near the middle of the ledger...

One name appeared again and again.

Richard Whitlock.

But another name shocked Daniel even more.

His own father's.

Anthony Carver.

Hannah looked at him.

"I thought your father refused to be involved."

Daniel's face had gone pale.

"He did."

"Then why is his name here?"

Before Daniel could answer, Martin pointed toward the final page.

"There."

Someone had written a note in blue ink.

It wasn't part of the original records.

It was a personal message.

Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.

Aaron's.

Daniel, if you're reading this, we ran out of time.

Your father isn't guilty. His signature was forged. Caleb found proof.

Don't trust anyone connected to Harbor Security.

Someone inside your organization betrayed us.

Protect Hannah. Protect the baby.

They're coming.

Silence filled the underground room.

Hannah covered her mouth to stop herself from crying.

Aaron had known he was going to die.

His last thoughts hadn't been about revenge.

They had been about protecting his family.

Daniel slowly closed the ledger.

"We finally have the evidence."

Before anyone could celebrate—

A faint metallic sound echoed from above.

One of the guards reached for his weapon.

"What was that?"

Then came another sound.

A heavy door slamming shut.

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

"They know we're here."

The lights from the stairwell suddenly disappeared.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A booming voice echoed from above.

"You should have left the past buried."

The unmistakable voice belonged to Richard Whitlock.

Then came another sound.

Not gunfire.

Not footsteps.

Gas.

Thick gray smoke poured down the stairwell, filling the underground vault.

Richard had no intention of fighting them.

May you like

He planned to suffocate every witness...

...and bury the truth with them forever.
