Chapter 19: The Birth That Changed the War

Chapter 18: The Man Who Walked Out of the Grave

Every person in the bunker stared at the security monitor.

The man approaching the hidden entrance walked slowly, his hands raised to shoulder height.

Rain soaked his dark suit.

A healing scar ran along the side of his forehead.

But there was no mistaking his face.

Detective Paul Mercer.

The man everyone had just watched die on the surveillance video.

Martin was the first to speak.

"That's impossible."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"I buried him."

Silence fell over the room.

Daniel looked at Samuel.

"Open the outer gate."

Samuel hesitated.

"It could be a trap."

"It could."

Daniel rested a hand on his pistol.

"But if that's really Paul Mercer, he deserves to be heard."

Samuel entered a security code.

The reinforced steel door unlocked with a deep mechanical click.

Five minutes later, Paul Mercer stepped into the operations center.

He looked exhausted.

His beard had grown longer than in the surveillance footage, and his left arm rested in a sling.

He stopped the moment he saw Hannah.

"So you're Aaron's wife."

Hannah nodded cautiously.

"You knew my husband."

Paul lowered his head.

"He saved my life."

The room remained silent.

Daniel folded his arms.

"The video shows you getting shot."

Paul gave a weary smile.

"I was."

He carefully removed his shirt collar just enough to reveal a deep scar beneath his right shoulder.

"The bullet missed my heart by less than an inch."

Martin stared.

"Then whose body was found?"

Paul's smile disappeared.

"There wasn't one."

"The fire at the dock destroyed most of the evidence."

"Everyone assumed I died."

"I decided not to correct them."

Ethan frowned.

"You stayed hidden for eight months?"

Paul nodded.

"Because the man hunting Aaron started hunting me."

Daniel motioned toward a chair.

"Sit."

Paul remained standing.

"I don't have much time."

"They know I'm here."

Samuel frowned.

"Who?"

Paul looked around the room.

"The same people who infiltrated Harbor Security."

He turned toward Daniel.

"I listened to Victor Carver's message."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Then you know about the traitor."

Paul nodded.

"Victor made one mistake."

"What?"

"He thinks there's only one."

The room fell completely silent.

Hannah frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Paul took a deep breath.

"There are two traitors."

Ethan stepped forward.

"Explain."

Paul looked at the surveillance monitors before answering.

"Twenty-five years ago, Marcus Kane betrayed Anthony Carver."

"Eight months ago..."

"...someone else betrayed Aaron."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"They're different people."

Paul nodded.

"Marcus belongs to Victor."

"The second traitor works for someone else."

Samuel slowly sat down.

"So Caleb was right."

"This goes beyond Richard."

Paul reached inside his jacket.

Everyone tensed.

Instead of a weapon, he removed a sealed evidence envelope.

"I've spent eight months gathering proof."

He placed the envelope on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Bank transfers.

Phone records.

And one handwritten list.

At the top was a title.

People Aaron Trusted

Hannah's heart skipped.

There were six names.

Daniel Carver.

Caleb Monroe.

Martin Hale.

Ethan Cross.

Detective Paul Mercer.

One final name.

The name had been circled in red ink.

Daniel slowly read it aloud.

"Dr. Olivia Reynolds."

Hannah looked confused.

"Our doctor?"

Paul nodded.

"The obstetrician who has been treating Hannah since Aaron died."

Hannah immediately shook her head.

"No."

"She's been wonderful."

"She stayed late during every appointment."

"She never even charged me after I lost my apartment."

Paul's expression softened.

"I know."

"That's exactly why Aaron trusted her."

Daniel examined the documents.

"What evidence do you have?"

Paul slid forward several bank statements.

"Three weeks before Aaron died..."

"Someone deposited two million dollars into an offshore account."

The account holder's name had been erased.

But one recurring payment stood out.

Every month.

Exactly the same amount.

Sent to a medical consulting company.

Owned by...

Olivia Reynolds.

Martin frowned.

"That could be legitimate."

Paul nodded.

"So I kept digging."

He placed another document on the table.

A flight manifest.

"Dr. Reynolds claimed she attended a medical conference in Boston the night Aaron died."

He pointed to the official airline records.

"She never boarded the flight."

Hannah stared at the page.

"So where was she?"

Paul answered quietly.

"At Pier Nine."

Before anyone could react, Hannah suddenly gripped the edge of the table.

A sharp pain spread across her abdomen.

She gasped.

Daniel was beside her instantly.

"Hannah!"

She closed her eyes.

"It hurts..."

Another contraction tightened across her stomach.

Paul's expression changed.

"How far along is she?"

"Thirty-two weeks," Daniel answered.

Samuel looked toward the medical cabinet.

"We need a doctor."

The words hung heavily in the room.

A doctor.

The only obstetrician Hannah trusted...

Was now a possible suspect.

Daniel looked at Hannah.

"We're not taking you to a hospital."

"They'll find you."

Hannah struggled to breathe.

"The baby..."

Paul reached into his pocket.

"I know another doctor."

Daniel looked up sharply.

"Can you trust them?"

Paul met his eyes without hesitation.

"I'd trust her with my own life."

At that exact moment, the bunker alarm sounded once more.

Samuel checked the cameras.

"No vehicles."

"No movement."

Then every computer screen flashed the same message in bright red letters.

STOP LOOKING FOR THE TRAITOR.

A second line appeared beneath it.

OR THE BABY DIES FIRST.

The room fell silent.

May you like

Whoever was watching them had just made one thing terrifyingly clear.

Hannah's unborn child had become the next target.
