Chapter 18: The Man Who Walked Out of the Grave

Chapter 17: The Detective Who Refused to Die
The office door clicked shut.
Detective Laura Bennett instinctively reached beneath her jacket and drew her service pistol.
"Police!" she shouted. "Show yourself!"
The hallway outside remained silent.
Only the emergency lights glowed faintly after the building lost power.
Laura's heartbeat quickened.
Whoever had cut the electricity knew exactly where she was.
She slowly backed toward her desk without taking her eyes off the doorway.

The flash drive remained plugged into her computer.
The surveillance video was still paused.
The man's face remained frozen on the screen.
The evidence everyone had been searching for.
The evidence someone was willing to kill for.
A faint scraping sound came from the ceiling.
Laura looked up.
An air vent slowly shifted.
Before she could react, a small metal canister dropped onto the carpet.
It began releasing white smoke.
"Tear gas."
She immediately kicked the canister back toward the doorway, covered her mouth with her sleeve, and dove behind a filing cabinet.
Two masked figures burst into the office.
Neither spoke.
One headed straight for the computer.
The other searched for Laura.
The first man reached for the flash drive.
Laura fired.
The bullet shattered the computer monitor.
The masked man stumbled backward.
The flash drive flew onto the floor.
The second intruder fired twice.
Glass exploded behind Laura.
She rolled across the floor, grabbed the flash drive, and sprinted toward the emergency exit.
The hallway was filled with smoke.
Alarms echoed through police headquarters.
Someone had planned the attack carefully.
Laura pushed open the stairwell door.
Heavy footsteps followed behind her.
She raced down three flights of stairs before hearing another gunshot.
A bullet struck the railing inches from her hand.
She kept running.
On the ground floor, uniformed officers rushed toward the smoke.
"Detective!"
Laura waved the flash drive.
"Protect this!"
She tossed it toward Officer Miguel Ortiz.
Miguel caught it instinctively.
"What's happening?"
"Get this to the FBI!"
The masked gunmen reached the lobby just as more officers flooded inside.
Realizing they had lost the evidence, they turned and fled through a rear exit.
By the time officers reached the parking lot...
They were gone.
Forty minutes later, Laura stood inside the command center with the police captain.
"The footage is authentic?"
Miguel nodded.
"I watched it myself."
Laura took a deep breath.
"We need Daniel Carver."
The captain frowned.
"Officially, he's still listed as missing."
"Then unofficially."
She looked him directly in the eye.
"Help me find him."
Deep inside Samuel Monroe's underground bunker, Daniel was studying Aaron's journal again when the secure phone rang.
Only three people knew the number.
He answered immediately.
"This is Carver."
Laura's voice came through the line.
"You need to hear this."
Daniel straightened.
"Are you safe?"
"Barely."
"What happened?"
"They tried to kill me."
The room became silent.
Laura continued.
"I have the missing surveillance video."
Daniel exchanged a look with Hannah.
"You identified the shooter?"
"Yes."
A long pause followed.
"I also know why Aaron smiled."
Daniel's grip tightened on the phone.
"Tell me."
"He wasn't meeting an enemy."
"He was meeting a police informant."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"The killer arrived later."
Laura emailed the recovered video through an encrypted federal server.
Seconds later, Samuel opened it on the bunker's main screen.
The footage was astonishingly clear.
It showed Aaron standing beneath the clock tower at Pier Nine.
Caleb stood beside him.
A third man joined them.
Detective Laura's voice explained as the video played.
"That's undercover Detective Paul Mercer."
Samuel nodded.
"I remember him."
"He disappeared nine months ago."
Laura continued.
"Paul was gathering evidence against Richard Whitlock."
The video showed Paul handing Aaron a sealed envelope.
Aaron smiled.
They shook hands.
Everything matched Laura's explanation.
Then another vehicle entered the frame.
A black SUV.
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Pause."
Samuel froze the image.
The license plate was visible.
Ethan Cross immediately recognized it.
"I've seen that SUV."
"Where?"
"It belonged to Harbor Security."
Daniel slowly nodded.
"The same company Caleb warned us about."
The video resumed.
A tall man stepped out of the SUV.
His face remained hidden beneath the shadow of a baseball cap.
Paul turned toward him.
His smile disappeared.
He recognized the newcomer.
Too late.
The man pulled a silenced pistol.
Three shots.
Detective Paul Mercer fell first.
Caleb grabbed Aaron and pushed him toward the docks.
They ran.
The killer chased them.
The footage skipped several seconds.
Then Aaron appeared again.
Alone.
He stopped beneath a floodlight.
The killer approached.
Aaron smiled.
Not because he trusted the killer.
Because he mistook him for someone arriving to help.
Daniel whispered,
"He couldn't see his face."
The baseball cap and darkness had concealed the killer's identity.
The killer fired.
Aaron collapsed.
The footage ended before the shooter's face became visible.
Hannah lowered her head.
"So close."
Daniel nodded.
"But not enough."
Just then, Ethan leaned closer to the frozen frame of the SUV.
"Zoom in."
Samuel enlarged the image.
Not the vehicle.
The windshield.
Reflected in the glass was another person standing across the street.
Only part of the face appeared.
Just enough to reveal one distinctive feature.
A long scar running from the left ear to the jaw.
Martin gasped.
"I know that scar."
Everyone turned toward him.
"Who is it?"
Martin swallowed hard.
"I saw that man twenty years ago."
"Where?"
"The night Anthony Carver disappeared."
Daniel stared at him.
"My father?"
Martin nodded slowly.
"I thought I'd never see that face again."
Samuel leaned forward.
"Tell us his name."
Martin closed his eyes.
"It was Anthony's personal bodyguard."
Daniel frowned.
"I don't remember my father having one."
"You were only thirteen."
Martin's voice grew heavy.
"His name was Marcus Kane."
"He vanished the same night Victor disappeared."
Samuel's expression darkened.
"Marcus Kane..."
Ethan looked up sharply.
"The former Marine?"
"The same one."
Daniel stared at the screen.
"If Marcus is alive..."
Samuel finished the thought.
"Then he's been protecting the real killer for twenty-five years."
At that exact moment, the bunker's security alarm sounded again.
One of Samuel's cameras showed a lone man walking toward the hidden entrance.
He wore a dark suit.
His hands were raised.
No weapons.
Samuel zoomed in.
Hannah's breath caught.
"I know him."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"So do I."
The visitor was Detective Paul Mercer.
