Chapter 13: The Man They Thought Was Dead

Chapter 12: Caleb's Last Warning

The roar of SUV engines echoed through St. Matthew's Cemetery.

Their headlights swept across the weathered gravestones like searchlights.

Inside the underground chamber, every member of Daniel's security team instinctively reached for a weapon.

Martin quietly extinguished the lantern.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Only the faint glow from Daniel's flashlight remained.

One of the guards whispered, "They're here."

Daniel nodded.

"How many?"

The guard peered through the narrow stairwell leading back to the chapel.

"At least fifteen."

"Maybe more."

Hannah instinctively placed one hand over her stomach.

The baby kicked again.

Daniel noticed.

He stepped closer.

"You stay behind me."

She gave him a tired smile.

"I've heard you say that before."

"And I'll keep saying it until you're safe."

Before Hannah could respond, footsteps echoed across the chapel floor above them.

Heavy boots.

Slow.

Confident.

Richard Whitlock wasn't rushing.

He believed he had already won.

Above ground, Richard walked into the abandoned chapel with Claire at his side.

His men spread throughout the cemetery, checking every crypt and mausoleum.

Claire looked around at the crumbling building.

"So this is where they came."

Richard examined the disturbed altar.

His expression darkened.

"They found it."

He knelt beside the open passage.

Fresh footprints covered the stone steps.

"They're still here."

Claire looked down into the darkness.

"We can smoke them out."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"I want the originals."

"And I want Daniel alive."

Claire frowned.

"You've tried to kill him twice."

Richard smiled faintly.

"I've changed my mind."

"Dead men can't tell me where the rest of the evidence is."

He looked toward one of his men.

"Seal every exit."

"No one leaves."

Underground, Daniel carefully opened Caleb's envelope.

Inside was a folded letter and a small memory card.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Caleb's handwriting was hurried, as though every word had been written under enormous pressure.

Daniel began reading aloud.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, then Aaron and I failed to stop them.

The ledger is only part of the truth.

Richard Whitlock didn't build the organization.

He inherited it.

Someone far more powerful financed everything from the beginning.

We found the name.

But before we could copy the final files, someone inside your own security division betrayed us.

Do not trust Harbor Security.

The traitor is closer than you think.

Protect Hannah.

Protect the baby.

And whatever happens... don't let Whitlock reach the memory card.

Silence filled the chamber.

Daniel slowly lowered the letter.

Martin broke the silence.

"So Richard wasn't the real mastermind."

Daniel nodded.

"He was working for someone else."

Hannah looked at the tiny memory card lying inside the envelope.

"What's on it?"

"I don't know."

Daniel slipped it into his pocket.

"But if Caleb died protecting it..."

"It matters."

A loud crash echoed from above.

Wood splintered.

The chapel doors had been kicked open completely.

Richard's voice drifted down the stairwell.

"Daniel."

His tone was calm.

"You've always been stubborn."

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

"I'm not in the mood for a conversation."

Richard laughed.

"You should be."

"I've spent eight months cleaning up Aaron Brooks's mistakes."

Hannah clenched her fists.

"My husband wasn't a mistake."

"No?"

Richard's voice echoed through the chamber.

"He should have accepted the promotion I offered."

Daniel frowned.

"You offered Aaron a job?"

Richard chuckled.

"A very generous one."

Hannah stared at Daniel.

"You never knew?"

Daniel slowly shook his head.

Richard continued.

"I offered Aaron enough money to take care of his family for life."

"He refused."

"He said there wasn't enough money in the world to help criminals."

Richard sighed dramatically.

"That answer cost him everything."

Tears filled Hannah's eyes.

Even knowing the danger...

Aaron had refused.

He had chosen integrity over safety.

Just as she knew he would.

Suddenly, another voice echoed from outside the chapel.

"Providence Police!"

"Everyone inside, drop your weapons!"

Richard's smile disappeared.

Claire looked out the broken window.

"There are police everywhere."

Richard frowned.

"Who called them?"

Daniel hadn't.

Neither had Martin.

For a brief moment, everyone was confused.

Then another familiar voice shouted through a loudspeaker.

"Richard Whitlock!"

"This is Detective Laura Bennett!"

"The building is surrounded!"

"Come out with your hands visible!"

Hannah looked at Daniel.

"Laura."

Daniel smiled for the first time all night.

"Looks like someone finally reopened the case."

Richard's face hardened.

He turned toward one of his men.

"How many officers?"

"More arriving every minute."

Richard thought quickly.

"If they arrest me now..."

Claire whispered nervously,

"What do we do?"

Richard's eyes became cold.

"We create another distraction."

He reached inside his coat.

Claire expected a pistol.

Instead...

He removed a small remote control.

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

"No..."

Martin looked confused.

"What is it?"

Daniel's face went pale.

"Explosives."

Before anyone could react...

Richard pressed the button.

A deafening explosion ripped through the front of the chapel.

Ancient stained-glass windows shattered.

The stone bell tower collapsed.

Massive chunks of masonry crashed through the roof.

The underground chamber shook violently.

Dust filled the air.

Hannah lost her balance.

Daniel caught her before she hit the floor.

Another explosion thundered outside.

Then another.

Richard wasn't trying to escape.

He was trying to bury everyone—

The police.

Daniel.

Hannah.

And every piece of evidence.

As the ceiling began to crack overhead, Daniel looked toward the only remaining passage deeper beneath the chapel.

"There!"

Martin followed his gaze.

"That's not on the map."

"It doesn't matter."

Daniel grabbed Hannah's hand.

"It's the only way left."

Behind them, the ceiling collapsed.

Ahead lay a narrow tunnel disappearing into complete darkness.
