Chapter 20: The Truth That Set Everyone Free

Chapter 19: The Birth That Changed the War
The red warning remained on every monitor.
STOP LOOKING FOR THE TRAITOR.
OR THE BABY DIES FIRST.
No one in the bunker spoke.
Daniel's face became frighteningly calm.
The calmer he looked, the more dangerous he became.
Samuel immediately disconnected the operations center from the internet.
One by one, the monitors went dark.
"They hacked into our internal network," Samuel said.
"But they shouldn't have been able to."
Ethan scanned the room.

"Unless someone planted malware weeks ago."
Paul Mercer nodded.
"They've been watching every move we make."
Hannah suddenly doubled over.
A sharp contraction stole her breath.
She grabbed Daniel's arm.
"It... hurts..."
Daniel caught her before she collapsed.
"It's starting."
Samuel checked his watch.
"The contractions are less than four minutes apart."
Paul looked at Hannah's pale face.
"We can't wait any longer."
Daniel met his eyes.
"The doctor you mentioned."
"Can she get here?"
Paul nodded.
"I already called her while I was driving."
"She should arrive in twenty minutes."
Twenty-three minutes later, a silver SUV stopped outside the hidden entrance.
Security cameras followed every movement.
A woman in her early forties stepped out carrying two medical bags.
She wore no jewelry.
No makeup.
Only a navy jacket over plain scrubs.
Daniel watched the monitor carefully.
"This is your doctor?"
Paul nodded.
"Dr. Grace Holloway."
"Former Army trauma surgeon."
"She left military medicine after exposing corruption inside a veterans' hospital."
Samuel completed a biometric scan.
"No weapons."
Daniel unlocked the door.
Grace entered the bunker with calm confidence.
"Which one is Hannah?"
Hannah managed a weak smile from the sofa.
"I'm here."
Grace immediately knelt beside her.
"When did the contractions begin?"
"About half an hour ago."
"Any bleeding?"
"No."
Grace gently examined her before checking the baby's heartbeat with a portable Doppler monitor.
The room filled with the rapid, steady rhythm of the baby's heart.
Everyone exhaled in relief.
Grace smiled.
"The baby's strong."
"But Hannah needs complete rest."
She looked directly at Daniel.
"Stress could trigger premature labor."
Daniel nodded.
"What do you need?"
"A quiet room."
"Clean towels."
"And everyone except one support person outside."
Martin immediately stood.
"I'll prepare everything."
While Grace examined Hannah in a private room, Daniel, Samuel, Ethan, Paul, and Martin gathered in the operations center.
Samuel projected a map of Providence onto the wall.
"We're running out of time."
Paul pointed to a blinking marker.
"Dr. Olivia Reynolds disappeared this morning."
Daniel frowned.
"Where?"
"She never arrived at her clinic."
"Her house is empty."
Ethan crossed his arms.
"Running away?"
Paul shook his head.
"Maybe."
"Or maybe someone made sure she disappeared."
Daniel stared at the map.
"We need evidence."
"Not guesses."
Before anyone could continue, Grace entered the room.
"She's sleeping."
Daniel looked relieved.
"Is she okay?"
"For now."
Grace hesitated.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"I reviewed Hannah's medical records."
"The ones from Dr. Reynolds."
Paul looked up.
"Did you find something?"
Grace slowly placed a folder on the table.
"Hannah's blood type is O-negative."
Daniel frowned.
"So?"
Grace turned another page.
"During her last appointment..."
"Someone ordered an unnecessary blood compatibility test."
Samuel looked confused.
"Why would that matter?"
Grace answered quietly.
"Unless someone wanted to confirm the baby's biological father."
Silence filled the room.
Martin stared at the report.
"You think Reynolds suspected something?"
Grace nodded.
"I think someone paid her to investigate."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"They wanted proof."
"Proof of what?" Hannah's voice asked softly from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Despite Grace's instructions, Hannah had quietly walked into the room.
She looked directly at Grace.
"What are they trying to prove?"
Grace looked at Daniel.
Daniel slowly approached Hannah.
"You should be resting."
"Answer me."
He took a slow breath.
"We've all believed Aaron was the baby's father."
Hannah frowned.
"He is."
"Of course he is."
Daniel nodded.
"I know."
Grace spoke carefully.
"But whoever is hunting you..."
"...believes the baby could be connected to the Carver family."
The room fell silent.
Hannah's eyes widened.
"What?"
Paul stepped forward.
"It's not about biology."
"It's about inheritance."
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
"Months before Aaron died, Victor Carver became convinced that Anthony Carver had secretly hidden ownership of part of the waterfront empire."
Samuel suddenly understood.
"The trust."
Daniel turned sharply.
"What trust?"
Samuel sighed.
"Your father established a confidential family trust years ago."
"It couldn't be claimed by Victor."
"Or Richard."
"It could only be unlocked by someone Anthony personally named."
Daniel stared at him.
"My father never told me."
"He couldn't."
Samuel lowered his eyes.
"He died before he could."
Hannah looked between them.
"What does that have to do with my baby?"
Paul answered.
"Victor believes Aaron discovered the location of that trust."
"And he believes Aaron left the key..."
"...to your child."
Late that night, while everyone else rested in shifts, Daniel sat alone outside Hannah's room.
He quietly unfolded Anthony Carver's journal once more.
A folded document slipped from between its pages.
He had never noticed it before.
Across the top were the words:
Last Will and Testament — Confidential Addendum
Daniel unfolded the page.
His father's signature appeared at the bottom.
So did one handwritten sentence.
If my son cannot protect what is right, then the future belongs to the child who can.
Daniel read it twice.
Then a third time.
His heartbeat quickened.
The document wasn't naming a specific child.
It referred only to "the child."
At that exact moment, Samuel rushed down the hallway.
"Daniel!"
He looked up.
"What happened?"
Samuel's face had turned pale.
"The DNA records from Hannah's hospital file..."
"They've been altered."
Daniel stood instantly.
"By who?"
Samuel swallowed.
"I don't know."
May you like
"But someone has already begun rewriting the truth..."
"...before the baby is even born."
